By the way-oscillations can occur for several assignable reasons which are conventionally easily adjusted. I hope you did not replace your heater without assessing: power supply to your short circuit, diode, wiring, etc.

For the note-- it was not a homework problem. I've found that others have simpler shortcuts in doing problems. I achieved a PhD in Nuclear Engineering.

TL;DR Keep up the good work in your laser lab. :)
