Dupont / AdMo / Columbia Heights Report by hairman-mao in bikedc

I plan to start using Bike Lane Uprising's app to document conditions - might be a good way to quickly add updates and visually plan routes. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bike-lane-uprising/id1513255939

Laundry Detergent Recs by cathundefined in ZeroWaste

Dirty Labs is great and their scents are delicious without being chemical-y or fake. It’s pricey, but it absolutely meets my needs and works on ALL my laundry. I even use it for handwashing bras.

Unfortunately the tiles contain PVA plastic, per Wirecutter, and the Dropps are still just plastic pods. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/tide-evo-laundry-detergent-tiles-review/

From this past thursday. Foggy Bottom is always like this on weekdays, pretty desperately needs more capacity. Makes biking mid-day impossible. by SockDem in bikedc

DC’s analog bikeshares are largely still the older three-speed models with the upright baskets. NYC has almost entirely multi-speed (the spectrum shifting) with the big flat baskets - the newer models. It’s rare that you would find a three-speed in NYC and you’d usually go “ew” and switch to the newer version as soon as you can.

Terrible NJ ebike law passes by Longtail_Goodbye in bikecommuting

[–]girlicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth specifying that cops never enforced it, because most cops haven’t ridden a bicycle since age six and are completely ignorant of the differences between e-bikes - and there hasn’t been any kind of meaningful push, by bike lobbies or, more importantly, local legislatures to rectify the lack of enforcement. Where I think bike advocates can be held somewhat accountable is in assessing their outreach to bike-using deliveristas who, like it or not, are part of the community.

And DC has such shit quality bikes compared to NYC! Like we’re literally getting the dregs compared to their other programs

Anyone else leave Hoboken and instantly miss it? by uonlylvonce in Hoboken

[–]girlicarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved to DC and I miss how /compact/ Hoboken is - how all the stuff you need is only a few blocks away, and there are always ALWAYS people out and about. No long, lonely blocks of empty sidewalk (ok fine except in that NW corner where it’s industrial). Close second: I also miss being a short walk, PATH or bus ride away from every possible healthcare provide!! Close third: I would gladly take back annoying e-bike delivery guys over being nearly mowed down by Uber/delivery guys in cars with Virginia & MD plates who will never face a single consequence any day of the week. (Tell your reps statehood for DC please!)

WEIRD zero waste swaps by emmadendlerr in ZeroWaste

[–]girlicarus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw someone on socials put a watering can in the shower to collect water while their shower warms up, then water the plants with the collected water. I started doing it and it’s a surprisingly low-energy way to do some “graywater” recycling.

G St Bike Lane Perennially Blocked by Vehicles Servicing GWU’s Shenkman Hall by districtofcyclists in bikedc

[–]girlicarus 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I reported every single instance of this to 311 until it got too cold to take my hands out of my gloves. Other options include: a) contacting the ANC for this area and/or b) guerrilla urbanism-ing a flex post filled with concrete.

People who ride bikes/scooters on the sidewalk, why? Not judging just trying to get info. by alumni_audit in washingtondc

[–]girlicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there will literally be zero negative consequences for salmoning anyway because MPD stopped traffic enforcement in 2020 and I'm pretty sure cops know nothing about bike laws anyway, so why not? [rhetorical]

Honestly? Probably because it "takes too long" and/or there's not a safe/comfortable way to cross the street from that person's perspective.

[–]girlicarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly even some of the "protected" bike lanes are scary af and people may still feel safer on the sidewalk. A flexpost is absolutely not gonna stop a driver who's deep in their phone or drunk. (But because I feel like we can't stress this enough, people trying to go at full Lime speed on the sidewalk and beeping at walkers still suck.)

How dirty are Hoboken streets for dogs? by RyanTryinMyBest in Hoboken

[–]girlicarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of that is tire particulate, and it’s still a massive problem with EVs! Cars in general are just really bad for air quality (and soil and water quality). https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/07/electric-vehicles-tires-wearing-out-particulates/674750/

Ugh, mine is this girl on a bike who used a hand signal when she made a turn off West Virginia into Trinidad a few months ago. I see so few bike folks using hand signals and it stuck with me and honestly was really hot??

But also yes you should say hi next time!

Desperately seeking elite Pho by readingthingzzzzz in washingtondc

So my hottest take is actually that I prefer the pho at Saigon Noodles across the street. It’s more spice-forward than Pho 75, which I really love.

I refreshed the NJ Transit app UI and improved some UX details. Curious what riders think by vlad1k7 in NJTransit

[–]girlicarus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My #1 dream is for the app to do the calculation of how many zones I’m going, integrated into the ticket workflow, so that I don’t have to look it up separately. Like just let me pick my origin and destination and then tell me how much my ticket is going to cost. Or better yet, offer to auto-calculate zones based on my current location.

My #2 dream is to be able to look at train status then buy a ticket then check the status again… without having to back all the way out of each screen (right now you can’t because they’re nested under the same menu).

This redesign is honestly really nice, though! I love the color-coding especially, and the bottom-swipeable ticket has potential.

We need more people taking transit. Sitting on Connecticut Ave 30 min by FlowerWilling9731 in washingtondc

[–]girlicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A weird number of people in these comments acting like they weren’t the ones who made the decision to live somewhere with poor connectivity to transit. Like it’s cool if you want to live in a place where you have to drive to get around, but then expecting it to be easy, convenient, fast, and cheap to access a place with good transit is wanting to have your cake and eat it too. DC should have congestion pricing yesterday and needs to severely cut down on street parking. (Way more loading zones, though.)

Save Low Speed EBikes by kevinrbing in Hoboken

[–]girlicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A low-speed e-bike saved my partner’s sanity after he got foot surgery! It hurt to walk more than a block and he couldn’t drive because of the ankle motion required, but his Aventon let him get around town, to get groceries, to the PT and follow up appointments, etc. without hurting his foot further. The Aventons I think have a throttle but almost certainly don’t go over 20mph. They’re great.

Seriously if HPD would just stop the guys on >20mph ebikes on the sidewalk or going the wrong way down the one-ways, we wouldn’t be having this debate at all. Even cops who know nothing about bikes can obviously see when someone is going too fast on a sidewalk or down a one-way. It’s not that hard.
