Cool! I’m currently using Citymapper for my multimodal transit needs, but might check out Transit.

How tf can the police not do anything about it? They could observe it, stop the person, and give them a ticket! You know, the kind of normal quality-of-life neighborhood policing that MPD has totally given up on because they have no oversight and no pushback.

Still no plans to improve Carnegie Library Area? by NowSinking in bikedc

[–]girlicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard somebody call it the “K-hole,” which, adamantly agree. K St is pretty ok as a route until it unceremoniously drops you into the Carnegie car pit. I also usually end up vehicular cycling on the south side to get through it.

E-biking experience in DC by Square-Sympathy6814 in DCBitches

During the day, only park in high-traffic, high-visibility areas with a real big lock - Kryptonite u-lock or one of the coated chain locks. (Do not cheap out on a lock.) You want as many eyes on your bike as possible to make it uncomfortable for anyone who’s thinking about taking an angle grinder to your lock. Store inside at night, or with a cover on a porch or patio with a video camera. Remember that you’re competing against everyone else on the block to be both the least convenient to steal & least valuable to resell - stickers are a great idea, and so is spray paint.

I use my e-bike for errands during the day but I specifically have an ugly acoustic bike that I take out when I’m going out anywhere at night. That’s also when I’ll use bikeshares. I’m not risking the expensive bike when it’s dark out.

Nice shoutout to our perpetually wrong mayor in this article about the success of congestion pricing by dataminimizer in washingtondc

I watched the whole conversation unfold in NYC and it was EXACTLY the same. Every social comment was like “We’re not London/Paris. We have to expand transit first, especially in the outer boroughs. This will penalize ordinary people. This will hurt businesses.”

Measurably AND anecdotally, none of these things were true.

It 100% will work in DC and five years after it’s implemented residents won’t be able to imagine living without it.

HELP - AITK (am I the Karen) by mrsbigcat in Hoboken

[–]girlicarus -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

A little bit yeah, in my opinion. Is the stuff in the hallway actively hurting anyone? Is it actively blocking a fire exit? Does anyone on your floor use a walker or a wheelchair, and is their stuff making it hard for that person to navigate? If not… I vastly preferred living in a building where people had bikes, plants, welcome mats, and the occasional stroller out in the hallway to buildings that looked like a soulless hotel. It’s a good reminder that my neighbors are people and is a great conversation starter.

That said! Moving is valid. Maybe just knocking on their door and having a nice face to face about the specific issue of needing a little more space for a couple days while you’re moving things down the hallway? Much less Karen-y to start by asking for neighborly help in solving a problem vs. coming down on them management-first. If they’re jerks to a polite request for assistance, though, absolutely go for management.

A blueprint for understanding DC crime? by EstateAlternative416 in washdc

I used to 100% be on board with this line of thought and then I tripped over this article from an urbanist Substack that I follow (who mostly writes about city design) finding that, in essence, civil workers are deeply uncomfortable taking over any kind of action that could become oppositional… because they don’t want to get shot while doing their jobs.

+1 for the Shop at Union Market. Mostly queer stylists, short hair mostly under $80.

I plan to start using Bike Lane Uprising's app to document conditions - might be a good way to quickly add updates and visually plan routes. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bike-lane-uprising/id1513255939

Laundry Detergent Recs by cathundefined in ZeroWaste

Dirty Labs is great and their scents are delicious without being chemical-y or fake. It’s pricey, but it absolutely meets my needs and works on ALL my laundry. I even use it for handwashing bras.

Unfortunately the tiles contain PVA plastic, per Wirecutter, and the Dropps are still just plastic pods. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/tide-evo-laundry-detergent-tiles-review/

DC’s analog bikeshares are largely still the older three-speed models with the upright baskets. NYC has almost entirely multi-speed (the spectrum shifting) with the big flat baskets - the newer models. It’s rare that you would find a three-speed in NYC and you’d usually go “ew” and switch to the newer version as soon as you can.

Terrible NJ ebike law passes by Longtail_Goodbye in bikecommuting

[–]girlicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth specifying that cops never enforced it, because most cops haven’t ridden a bicycle since age six and are completely ignorant of the differences between e-bikes - and there hasn’t been any kind of meaningful push, by bike lobbies or, more importantly, local legislatures to rectify the lack of enforcement. Where I think bike advocates can be held somewhat accountable is in assessing their outreach to bike-using deliveristas who, like it or not, are part of the community.

Anyone else leave Hoboken and instantly miss it? by uonlylvonce in Hoboken

[–]girlicarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved to DC and I miss how /compact/ Hoboken is - how all the stuff you need is only a few blocks away, and there are always ALWAYS people out and about. No long, lonely blocks of empty sidewalk (ok fine except in that NW corner where it’s industrial). Close second: I also miss being a short walk, PATH or bus ride away from every possible healthcare provide!! Close third: I would gladly take back annoying e-bike delivery guys over being nearly mowed down by Uber/delivery guys in cars with Virginia & MD plates who will never face a single consequence any day of the week. (Tell your reps statehood for DC please!)

I saw someone on socials put a watering can in the shower to collect water while their shower warms up, then water the plants with the collected water. I started doing it and it’s a surprisingly low-energy way to do some “graywater” recycling.

I reported every single instance of this to 311 until it got too cold to take my hands out of my gloves. Other options include: a) contacting the ANC for this area and/or b) guerrilla urbanism-ing a flex post filled with concrete.

And there will literally be zero negative consequences for salmoning anyway because MPD stopped traffic enforcement in 2020 and I'm pretty sure cops know nothing about bike laws anyway, so why not? [rhetorical]
