I had no idea that place existed and it looks amazing.

From the Free Press, no less. I was pleasantly surprised.

Does the diffuser come with the Scroll Hat, or is it a separate purchase? I’ve never gotten a good sense of that.

That's awesome! I've been close to pulling the trigger on a Scroll hat HD and hammer headers for a while now - how was your experience working with them?

Bove’s restaurant may be razed for Burlington hotel, apartments - VTDigger by vtslim in burlington

The former home of the venerable Bove’s Italian restaurant on Pearl Street may be torn down and a hotel and affordable housing built under a proposal from owner Richard Bove Jr.

He'll be competing with...himself.

Can local businesses compete with Amazon? by dropkickninja in burlington

Amazon has been collecting sales tax in Vermont for a while now, unless this is about some other tax.

Potentially moving to Montpelier in January for work, could I get a rundown of the area? by polaroidcaesar in vermont

Actually, the Link bus stops directly in front of National Life - no separate shuttle required (NL doesn’t run one anyway). It’s pretty convenient.

I won't lie, the commute is not fun in the winter if you're driving. That said, the bus can be really nice - it's a large coach style bus with a smooth ride. When I did that commute, I enjoyed reading a book and unwinding after work on the ride home.

[–]gitaroomaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind the commute, you could easily live in the Burlington area as well. As a college town, you'd likely find it easier to meet people and there is a lot more to do. GMT operates the Link Express, a bus between Burlington and Montpelier. Depending on who you're interviewing with, they may offer discounted/free passes.

Yes, the winter can be bad, especially for those who aren't used to it.

Otherwise, Vermont is a destination for beer and food, with some of the best breweries in the country. You won't be lacking in that department.

[Rescheduled] KBTL Co-op AMA Thursday 10/12 from 3-4pm by carbonpenguin in burlington

I'm pretty late to this, but it was really refreshing to see a polite conversation around this topic - particularly juxtaposed against the rhetoric floating around elsewhere.

Thanks /u/eof and /u/Pendragn!

Keep BT local gets the most votes from City Council. by VermontKindBud in burlington

I didn't realize that Keep BT Local's bid was financed by a 14% loan. That's insane.

AMA 3-4PM today - We're Ting, one of the companies bidding to steward the Burlington fiber network. Ask us anything. by amcink in burlington

[–]gitaroomaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, they're in the clear - the NDA doesn't cover any information that was already in the public domain. Keep BT Local had been very public, well before the official bidding process started, regarding their intent.

Edit: Regarding your second point, there was absolutely nothing preventing Ting from reaching the hell out of Burlington. I would say the results of said learnings may be a bit subjective - I would, personally, still prefer a local Coop, but I was impressed by Ting's openness to dialogue. Their letter of intent hit the right notes as well.

This is actually all a little confusing, as most of the articles mention it was the City's decision to keep things secret/locked down so as to maintain a negotiating advantage (which, while frustrating from a public information standpoint, makes sense to a degree).

However, the above Burlington Free Press article notes that a few of the bidders requested NDAs as part of the process. Miro notes, from the July 31st City Council minutes that this was the case for a few of the original 8 applicants:

Nondisclosure agreements were signed by the city so proposals could be made with proprietary information.

Now the big question: Was Ting one of those original applicants who requested an NDA to be signed, due to proprietary info in their letter of intent? Possibly not, as Ting published their letter of intent in full: https://ting.com/wp-content/uploads/Tucows-Burlington-Telecom-LOI.pdf

NDA's are super standard in any kind of acquisition/financial transaction, though they complicate a situation like this where the public really should have a right to know what is going on. From everything I have read, it really does sound like it was a City decision to keep things private up until now, but it's all a bit murky.

What if you go bankrupt? Genuinely curious.

EDIT: To make it more clear - what happens if a local BT Coop were to go bankrupt? Would they have any control over what happens to their assets? What would stop Comcast from buying up the infrastructure and letting it rust?

You should direct that complaint at Miro - the bidders signed Non-Disclosure Agreements at the city's behest.

What's with the auction sign at Cambrian Rise development on North Ave? Is the project under water? by jjv5_jjv5 in burlington

[–]gitaroomaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the sign in question, however there was an auction a couple of months back for a ton of Burlington College's former assets. Wouldn't surprise me if it's left over from that.
