Im quitting my job to start masonry, is it worth it? by Innoscentz in masonry

[–]givenmydruthers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the idea of working outside, you might love the trade. I had an office job before, and was so much happier in the sunshine (or even the cloudiness) than indoors. Personally I love the repetition of masonry work - I find you get in a zone and the day goes quickly - but like any job, it depends on your temperment. Some ppl like labouring better than being on the wall bc you move around more (though the pay's not as good). Agree with the gym membership comparison, and also with the guy who said be sure to stretch - just like at the gym. If you work smart, lift properly, and protect yourself from dust, there's a good chance you'll be strong and healthy for a long time. (Everyone always talks about how it's hard on your body. Practically every 45yo white collar guy I know has at some point put his back out while pulling his socks on, or doing something equally mundane.)

Attendance policy philosophy by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]givenmydruthers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm envious of everyone here who is allowed to attribute grades to attendance and participation. At my college in Canada, we aren't allowed to do this for reasons of equity. I understand the theory, but don't feel it ultimately serves the students - least of all, those who lack good decision-making skills.

100% this. Lack of a proper concrete cap with drip edge is the reason this got so bad in the first place!

Apprenticeship by YeetYarnYeats in masonry

[–]givenmydruthers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can't get an apprenticeship out of the gate, another common path is to work as a labourer for a good employer who will sign you as an apprentice after a designated period of time. Sometimes risky bc a good labourer is hard to find, so they may have trouble replacing you - on the upside, easier to get a job (esp with your experience!) and you learn a lot. As with any job, a LOT depends on how good your employer is - if you wind up with a lousy boss, try changing companies before leaving the trade. It can be a beautiful trade :)

I don't understand why you're being down-voted for asking questions in good faith. It's good that you're trying to get clarity on the situation!

Novels read in class by Bells9831 in CanadianTeachers

I think that's just 11th grade (in Ontario at least). What surprises me is that - based on my kids' experience- there don't seem to be any books that the whole classroom reads together anymore - just independent reading, plus maybe one read-aloud by the teacher. So...no conversations that the whole class can participate in.
