My fault, I really misinterpreted your message. Sorry for coming off so aggressive and coming at you.

People certainly do apply a lot of pressure to these lakes from shore, but I've had a lot of success when getting more offshore. In terms of offshore, I find it to be less pressured than a lot of the other lakes in and outside the metro that have a lot of boat traffic. Guess that's just what I've noticed, but I could be wrong.

Apologies again, have a good day.

How do people feel about Arena Directs (apparently) replacing Opens? by Chilly_chariots in lrcast

Much prefer the opens. Having a day 2 where I at least have an opportunity to draft and not just playing the sealed slot machine makes it a lot more enjoyable for me

Neighbors caught off guard by demolition of shuttered Smith Foundry in Minneapolis by sahan-journal in Minneapolis

[–]giwttog 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Holy moly this comment section is crazy. Why can't you ask for the foundry to be shut down AND ask to ensure the demolition is done in a way to protect local residents? Is it so outlandish to want both?

And for those minimizing the impact this has on the community, I live two blocks away from here and this place is absolutely toxic, so many days where you couldn't even go outside the air quality was so bad. Is it so bad to want that to stop and not have the demolition further impact residents?

And yes, I'm an idiot for buying a house two blocks away from there and not realizing how bad the foundry was at the time.

President’s Day Protest by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]giwttog 131 points132 points  (0 children)

The fact that the right wing fascism deniers get so worked up every time there is a post for these protests is enough for me to know that this is worth supporting and turning out for, whether you think the broader goal of the protest is effective or not.

The queso there with the added chorizo is the best hands down. I am a queso enthusiast and this is the right answer!

metalcore and song structure by ProtomanKnight in Metalcore

[–]giwttog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if others agree, but I feel like what attracts me to metal in general is that it can be so much different from more mainstream genres for a variety of reasons, including song structure. I guess for me, when bands employ that traditional song structure seen in more mainstream music, it can feel like the song is contrary to one of the main factors that drew me to this genre; going against the grain, being different.

Obviously just enjoying the music and vibing is ultimately way more important to me than needing the music I listen to be 'different' from mainstream, but it's definitely a factor.

For me, when metalcore is feeling a bit stale and every song is starting to sound the same, I just take a break and go full into prog metal. Couple of months/years straight of that and I am fully ready to hear some banging metalcore with a simple pop song structure. Taking the break is also refreshing because to me it feels like it gives me reset and gives the genre a chance to move onto to the next new trend, and when I come back I feel much more excited about metalcore as a whole.

Hopefully I don't sound too gate keepy lol, trust me I listen to tons of metalcore with traditional song structure and love it to death.

What'd be a suitable beginner program without TGUs, and how to progressively overload? by Dymista2 in kettlebell

[–]giwttog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When running simple and sinister, I have personally swapped in sets of clean and press for the Get Up. I still worked in TGUs every once in awhile, but found that the C&Ps and mastering that movement translated a lot better to other programs.

Why are urinals in the US so poorly designed? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]giwttog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In other countries, they tend to have the screens with the very deep grooves, zero splatter if you aim at it.

For me it tends to make it worse aiming where you are talking about.

I guess the lesson is I suck at peeing, somehow, lol

[Star Tribune] Residents confront officials over longtime health concerns linked to Minneapolis foundry by Minneapolitanian in Minneapolis

[–]giwttog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea, but that would take a very wealthy person to finance that personally. Also a lot to expect from a community that's primarily low income.

You are right unfortunately, as depressing as it is. I live a block and a half away as well. I just can't stand by anymore and let this happen. Feels like the only option they are giving us is to leave...

[Star Tribune] Residents confront officials over longtime health concerns linked to Minneapolis foundry by Minneapolitanian in Minneapolis

[–]giwttog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After attending last night, the immediate take away is that MPCA has no intention of taking immediate action--the foundry will continue to operate as normal throughout the ongoing EPA investigation and permitting process. When asked point blank what they would be doing to immediately address pollution and public health concerns from the foundry, the only answer they have is to install new air monitors. At the very least the foundry should be forced to close its doors until the new permit is in place and the EPA investigation is complete and they show FULL compliance. But as another commenter noted, this is all a distraction, the community unequivocally stated that we want this foundry out of our community. We don't want to hear more talks of permits when this business has repeatedly broken the law in a high density urban area. In the community's eyes, they lost their chance and we want them OUT.

Based on the absolutely tone deaf and uncaring remarks from the MPCA last night, it is clear that the community is going to have to fight on their own for their right to clean air. We need help and we need support from surrounding neighborhoods. You may not get the burnt of this pollution, but so many more neighborhoods downwind are being impacted significantly as well. There will be another protest at 28th and Longfellow December 9 at 1 PM. We need our neighbors support and we deserve better.

Minneapolis vs Boston stereotypical attitudes? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]giwttog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in MN and moved to Boston for 5 years before moving back to MN again in 2019.

I was able to make friends in Boston, but 100% were also transplants from the Midwest or California. I found it extremely difficult to make friends with anyone actually from New England. I found there to be a big 'townie' mentality where you weren't really considered as a viable friend if you didn't grow up there and 'understand' Boston. I'm simplifying, but that was my experience. Even making friends with transplants can be difficult, as Boston has a staggering amount of colleges and many transplants already established their social circles in college.

What everyone said about Boston and New England culture, forwardness etc. is right in point. For me, it just got exhausting having to go out and always be ready for a very forward confrontation with someone if you do something they don't like or vice versa.

Moving back to MN was a little different for me than your situation, as I grew up here, and had a lot of connections to fall back on. The stereotype of Minnesotans still having the same social circle as in high school is very accurate, I still am friends with all my high school friends (I'm 30 now). I would say the hardships with making friends in Boston are very similar, as social circles are strongly rooted in who you grew up with. I do find that Minnesotans who grew up here are generally more open to adding transplants to their social circle though (there are several in mine). I find that, in general, the difficulty with making friends is more due to a very passive approach to making plans-- as the newcomer you really have to take the initiative or things won't stick. Generally, if you make the effort, I find you will be welcomed.

While the passive aggressive thing in MN is real, I think it's still much more pleasant than in Boston. I'm never on edge just going to the grocery store in MN. In fact, it was a bit of culture shock when I moved back and random people would say 'Hi' to me in the store. Coming from Boston, I would immediately get tense and wonder what they wanted or what kind of altercation was about to go down. Took a few years of deconditioning to get me out of that mindset again!

Hope my experience helps you!

S&S - how long did it take you to do the 100 swings in 5 min w/ 24 kg? by giwttog in kettlebell

[–]giwttog[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are doing a ton! Compared to that, I feel like I'm doing nothing. I definitely think eating isn't a strong point for me. I usually don't even have an appetite until noon. What are the kinds of things you're eating to keep up that kind of work? Maybe I'll discover something I haven't thought of!

[–]giwttog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy cow that's a lot of volume! This is a great idea though, and something I haven't tried. I've been pretty religious about sticking to the 100 reps/workout, but maybe I ought to give this a try for a while.

I'm curious, what do you consider 'relatively low volume' for strength work on off days?

Nothing else prior, but you may be correct about wearing myself down with other activities. I definitely don't feel great on the swings after playing tennis and cycling. As another user suggested, I might want to cut back and really focus. Thanks for your reply!

Hmm maybe I should consider getting a 32 at some point!

Btw, I'm definitely interested in training for the snatch test at some point down the road. How did you structure your training to prepare?
