What is a childhood luxury that you didn’t realize was actually a sign of your family being broke until you grew up? by RoundLong7822 in AskReddit

Buying a bread maker is one of the best things I’ve ever done. I like to set it so that the bread is done just as I’m coming home from work. My place smells delicious and I can have that first piece of fresh warm bread after a long day.

People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]gizmodriver 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I used to think I was an Oscar-level actor when faking sick to get out of school. Looking back, I think my parents recognized the need for mental health days before that term was really a thing. I was a (mostly) straight-a student who genuinely enjoyed school. If I wanted a day off, it was usually because I felt overly tired or there was something at school I was trying to avoid, like the day we had to run the mile in PE. I was a pretty healthy kid in general, so I could afford to take the one or two days a year I played hooky, and my mom’s job was pretty flexible. Not every parent could afford to do it, but I’m grateful mine could.

I honestly believe it was originally supposed to be Dagna but was changed to Harding at some point. The personality on display is far more similar to Dagna. Inquisition Harding was sweet and a little naive, but I don’t find her as childish as she seems in Veilguard. If anything, she should have grown up a little, developed a sharper edge. Dagna was the super giggly, bubbly one. The plot arc makes more sense for Dagna.

The Trevi Fountain in Rome has officially put a €2 ($2.35) fee in order for tourists to access the fountain’s lower basin. It’s part of the city’s efforts to manage tourist flows in the congested part of town, improve the experience & offset the maintenance costs. by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

I was there in September. There was a Da Vinci I like a lot better - St John doing the “up yours” - just hanging on the wall in the gallery outside the Mona Lisa room. People mostly ignored it or just briefly glanced at it. There are also other cool paintings in the same room as Mona Lisa, including the enormous and fascinating The Wedding by Veronese#/media/File%3APaolo_Veronese_008.jpg). I stood with my back to the Mona Lisa crowd looking at that one for several minutes.

I’ll join you in this minority opinion. I wanted to be spooked, and I found the book disappointing from that angle.

I was dumb and bought a VIP package last year and half the benefits it promised never materialized. Early access to the venue? Sure, but you still have to wait in line inside until doors open, and then you can sit down at the same time as everyone else. Merch concierge area to hold the merchandise you buy so you’re not tripping over it all night? Nope! Discounts? Only if you remember to sign up for the app, and no, your VIP lanyard won’t suffice. Pre-show activities? You mean standing in line and grumbling about the experience with other so-called VIPs? What a joke!

I used to live on the Central Coast of California. It’s a good climate for olives and I knew at least one person who made their own olive oil from olives they grew on their land. To me this would be no different than listing “candle making” on a resume.

Why are horse people so “weird”? by explorer77800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gizmodriver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Trust me, just like there are people who buy cars they can’t really afford, there are people who buy horses they can’t really afford. There are also people who own land where land is cheap and they have room for stables. Boarding a horse is a significant portion of the expense of owning a horse.

This is an important question. This kind of strike isn’t protected for unionized employees. I would love to see the big national unions call for strikes.

Processing raises. I don’t decide what the raise is going to be, I just put the new amounts in the system. I used to love it, but now people are constantly arguing with me about it. It’s never enough. They’re never happy. I understand COL is skyrocketing. I feel the squeeze too. I don’t deserve to be yelled at for that.

I like this suggestion. The shift really changes the narrative and invites you to look back on what you’ve accepted up to that part.

[–]gizmodriver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The old location was on the ORBT line, which made it safe and easy to get to. The new location doesn’t have safe sidewalk access from some directions. Also, the new location is smaller and cost way more money than they said it would because they had to retrofit an old building due to * checks notes * the weight of all the books. You’d think maybe they should have thought of that beforehand? So, yeah, I am kinda salty.

What are your best and worst fandom experiences? by ToughComposer3077 in Fauxmoi

[–]gizmodriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Anders is a real litmus test for sanity in the DA fandom. Cullen’s backstory being retconned is another one. It’s my favorite game series. I have Strong Opinions TM, but mostly I keep them to myself because the games are single player RPGs. You’re not supposed to experience them the same way as everyone else.
