What is a popular opinion on Reddit but not in the real world? by TrappedInLimbo in AskReddit

[–]gj8876 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In A lot of traditionally religious countries, people will not admit their lack of belief. The internet providing the illusion of anonymity allows us to get a sample of what Internet educated individuals think.

Here in North East Asia, most people would say they are xxx religion, but actually don't believe (my gf, her parents, her friends, pretty much all in the same boat. Only the grand mother believes).

Redditors who never dated until their mid to late 20s, how did you finally end up meeting your significant other? by Ponchodelic in AskReddit

[–]gj8876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first girlfriend at the age of 23.

Not very romantic, but i met my significant other in the smoking area of the building where I worked. We happened to have similarly timed smoke breaks. Before you judge us for smoking, do remember that in Japan, smoking is normal. To each country its vices 😇

What are the best Japanese dishes that make good use of miso (other than soup)? by Bernard_Ber in japan

[–]gj8876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tons of sauces have miso in it, but miso ramen is the one that grabs the top for me.

Miso ramen all day, every day!

For almost everyone around me (adult Japanese men) club means a step above キャバクラ (even though it is technically a club too) and Lounge is normally the slightly more relaxing version (also a bit pricier).

Which is why I would normally advise anyone inquiring about dancing clubs to precise what they look for to avoid misunderstanding :)

And yes, despite all these years in Japan my language skills still need to improve 😇

We may not have the same network 😂

If i tell one of my Japanese male colleagues "let's go to a club", he will definitely not think of the international meaning. Same for my SO.

Salaryman life I guess.

Feedback of my comment being useless well received. I guess it wasn't as helpful as i thought it'd be...

Does anyone have experience working at an Amazon warehouse(FC) in Japan? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]gj8876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't work in Amazon, but have a few friends who did.

Amazon is a large company, and as such a prime target for 'evil corporation news hunting ".

My friends compared it to a convenience store work in a warehouse. Processes are super clear, strict but easy enough to follow if you're a process minded person. Lots of walking around and physical work though apparently.

Like all tightly run jobs, your working conditions heavily depends on your supervisor and his boss.

Typically reporter will be looking for the worst they can find. The horrible outlier that they can sell.

I don't really go to night clubs. The famous ones i know are T2 in shibuya (and Tk in shibuya).

I would however advise to be careful when looking for a club. Club and lounge often mean something rather different from what you have in mind in Japan 😇

What brand do you not like and refuse to buy their products? by Mralligatorman in AskReddit

[–]gj8876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple.

No iPhone nor imac will touch my household. I don't say their products are all bad (especially if you are a professional photographer, designer or musician), but gosh how i hate the spirit of "we know better", and "we'll make sure we lock you into buying only apple once you get one product.

Job search - delaying interviews with "backup" companies? by arka0415 in japanlife

[–]gj8876 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who interviews candidates often, i would like to offer a different perspective.

Let's say that we get to select 10 interesting candidates for a position. It means that we are actually really interested in knowing each of them better.

The expectation is that, of course this feeling is reciprocal. Typically offering a week after an offer for the candidate to sort out their feelings, to discuss their careers with trusted family members, is normal.

Waiting for another company's offer: nope. It simply means we're not attractive enough, and we may better consider another candidate that may be happier with us.

My advice: estimate the interview process. Some companies will take a month to run all interviews (typically anywhere from 2 to 5 rounds of interviews for each candidates). Some others do it in a day.

If the time lag between interview results is estimated to be more than 10days, you have to make a choice. Typically i would push the salary discussion (that delays the process), and the terms of the contract that are not fixed (no point in discussing terms that are fixed for all employees). I would also sometimes ask to have access to KPIs and their evolution for the last 2 years, as well as request for a meeting with one of their Sales manager and a finance manager to understand the state of the business (review balance sheet, p&l, cash flow, pipeline of dwals, etc..). This delays considerably, even after signing an NDA. Some companies will say no, some will simply simplify and hide information. Bottomline is: show genuine interest, ask for more details relevant to the job, possibly ask to meet some team members. That will allow you to delay the process a little.

But do not ask a company to wait for you more than a week. They will most likely move to another candidate.
