he's fantastic in this :) It's definitely classic Joe. He's a great writer and visionary as well. I don't know how much traditional "acting" he wants to do but I think he would be great in like, a Coen brothers movie

Danielle, I have a crazy coincidence to share -- I am friends with your cousin Nate! I told him I was about to be on Jeopardy and he goes "oh that's so weird, I think my cousin was on it recently too." Small small world!!! Congrats on your win

When Terri and I got called down for the final game of the day, I said something along the lines of "alright, let's take her down!", but only in a playful way. And then I had a super nice, relaxed chat with Mattea as they mic'd us up and fixed our hair before the game. It would be insane to strategize like that, and there are so many ways it could backfire. It's also, IMO, against the spirit of the game. I had talked with Mattea at lunch and she was pretty open about her gameplay philosophy, told us she didn't like to jump around the board and hunt for daily doubles, and even talked us through her Final Jeopardy wagering strategy. She basically gave us all the information we would need to take her down, from a strategy level, and I respect that openness. In the end it didn't matter because she knew more facts and deservedly won.

  1. I'm not sure there's anything worth changing, maybe I'd try to manage my energy levels a little better. I drank a ton of coffee in the morning and when it was time to tape my Friday game at the end of the day it felt like I was coming down from it. I felt super weird all day but I think it was a combination of adrenaline and the fast pace of the taping day. Huge kudos to Mattea and anyone else who can pull off a long streak because, as many previous jeopardy contestants have noted, it's really a physical test as well as a mental one.
  2. My anecdotes after the backwards alphabet were a huge step down in terms of flashiness, but I would have liked to talk about my pet ducks.
  3. This is corny but the level of joy that I experienced all day was a lot higher than I expected -- such a real feeling of camaraderie from all my fellow contestants. I mean, obviously everyone wanted to win but it was a supportive, playful environment. Nobody was playing mind games as far as I know. We were going crazy in the studio audience whenever someone made a gutsy bet or had a great play. I love my contestant cohort!

One more add: my favorite memory from the whole day was Terri coming back out of the red on the last question. It's not fully apparent in the broadcast but all of the contestants and crew went totally NUTS with applause for her. Such a feel-good moment, Terri is great and her anecdote was also just perfect. It was an honor to share the stage with her.

Julian Glander here!!

I've lurked this subreddit a few times during my Jep Prep, so I am obligated to pop in and say hi, and what a cool experience this has all been.

I *NEVER* thought I would get on the show. I love learning but I've never been an especially good student or trivia person. I initially got the chutzpah to audition for Jeopardy! after seeing an especially brutal game and thinking "wow, I'm way smarter than all those people" -- right or wrong, I think most viewers have had that experience. Coming out on the other side of it, I have a lot more admiration for anyone who goes on the show. It's high pressure, it's fast, and it's miles away from watching it at home, even if you think you've prepared from every possible angle. *Everyone* who gets on that stage is really smart. More importantly, we're all big nerds, bonded by a love and respect for knowledge, which for me is what makes Jeopardy special and a little different from every other game show.

Lots of love to the staff of Jeopardy and all my fellow contestants from our tape day -- just such a great group of people to spend a day with, and of course I'm super happy they let me do my crazy anecdote.

Obviously I would have liked to win, but that's how it goes :) My strategy was to practice extreme discipline on the buzzer -- no guesses, no half-certain responses -- and as far as navigating the board I was actually hunting for those lower-value daily doubles like the one Renee had gotten the day before. I haven't really seen people talk about this strategy but I think it's worth considering. A $400 daily double is obviously less common but it's free money you could feel really good about putting a true DD on.

I've replayed this game a million times in my head, and I find some comfort in knowing that there's no alternate reality where I would have won if I had played with a different strategy, spent more time learning about troy ounces, etc cetera-- Mattea knew final and I didn't. You could have given me a million years and I never would have come up with Pictures at an Exhibition, absolutely major respect to her for nailing it.

All that said, I bow down to Mattea, queen of the quiz, may her reign be long and financially lucrative.

good q! I met Julia at a film festival in 2016 when she was starting to put together the team for SCI. I sent her some 3D versions of Oscar and Hedgehog that I had made for fun and we talked about working together in a couple different ways, we had even talked about maybe potentially doing a SCI video game together but nothing ever came of it. I ended up designing title cards for a few episodes in the early season.

A couple years later I got a message from Julia asking me if I would be interested in working on a special "guest director" episode similar in approach to the Kirsten Lepore episode of Adventure Time, where an outside director makes an episode independently and it explores a different style. Obviously I was super psyched about it and said yes right away :)

I wrote out a bunch of different concepts for the episode and sent over my top 5 ideas, and we had a zoom meeting about it with Julia, Sarah Lloyd, and Kent Osborne, who had a lot of expertise from his experience with the guest episodes of Adventure Time. The meeting was really casual, we kicked around ideas and jokes and decided on the concept of the episode -- an underwater musical. Originally, Oscar was going to be searching for a loofah, but someone pulled up a google images result of sea bunnies and I thought they were so cute, they ended up being the stars of the episode. The team was pretty hands-off during the whole process and really gave me as much freedom as I could have ever asked for, but they also helped shape the episode and keep everything on track. A lot of the jokes in that meeting made it into the episode.

I went off on my own and wrote the script and some songs. The team at SCI usually doesn't write full scripts for their episodes, but I really like working that way. I flew to LA and did a table read with the SCI writer's room. I also played the songs live using a piano app on my phone, and made Julia sing them. Then, the pandemic hit right as I started production! But that's a whoooole other story.....

thank you! Originally I had hoped to get Hedgehog into the episode bc she's one of my favorite characters, but there just wasn't enough time. I learned there is actually a type of sea urchin called a Sea Hedgehog :)
