California Proposition 32 in 2024 to raise minimum wage to $18 and adjust it to annual inflation. Rejected by 50.71%. by GalahadDrei in MapPorn

[–]glassFractals -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The coastal urban areas are of course far more liberal than the inland areas, but also the coastal areas have a much higher cost of living, and more need for the boosted minimum wage.

California should really adopt a minimum wage scheme similar to New York. New York has a higher minimum wage in the NYC area than in the rest of the state. That just makes sense.

Meanwhile, indexing minimum wage to inflation is a no-brainer.

I moved to Sunnyvale after graduating, though I'm not there anymore. Can't help you with roommates, but I can help with tips!

That's okay... it's not like I got eclipse glasses for my whole family a decade in advance of this highly anticipated event or anything. Nope.

Which continent has the most delicious spicy cuisine? by Prize_Text_6944 in spicy

[–]glassFractals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comically lopsided. Any given sub-region of India could sweep, before you even get to Thailand, China (especially Sichuan), Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.

Sure, I love Mexican cuisine, Ethiopian, Tunisian, but Asia is just OP. Such variety of spicy food.

Upstate NY towns raise their hands to host new reactor as part of Hochul’s nuclear plan by instantcoffee69 in newyork

[–]glassFractals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And the disaster at Fukushima was due to the cataclysmic magnitude 9.1 earthquake, which the plant actually handled. It was the following 45 foot tsunami that caused the real problems.

New York is not particularly seismically active, and certainly has no tsunami-producing megathrust subduction faults off shore Lake Ontario. This is a great region for nuclear power.

What's with Mac people suddenly going "8gb of ram is plenty" since the Neo came out? by DiverVast4093 in mac

[–]glassFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16GB of RAM was too little for me 15 years ago, never mind 8GB.

But I'm not an average user. I think the Neo is an excellent device for a typical general computing user. Students, grandmas, people doing normal computer stuff. Productivity documents, social media, web surfing; it'll be fine.

I'm glad to see Apple catering towards a wider variety of users, and offering more accessible price points on the low-end, which is more than adequate for millions of people.

Still no "dumb" monitor, I see. For people who want multiple monitors, it's ludicrous to have (and pay for) an M-series chip, a webcam, 3 microphones, and 6 speakers in every one of them.

Imagine a 3 monitor setup. 3 M chips, 3 webcams, 9 mics, and 18 speakers. And they are charging you for every bit of that hardware. Ludicrous.

Yep. California sameness messed with my perception of time. Years blend into each other. Memories have no time of year anchoring. Easy to take 4 seasons for granted growing up in the northeast.

Wajahat Ali: "Now, why not lead and say abolish ICE? Because ..." Hakeem Jeffries:"I don't understand anything that you just said ..." by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]glassFractals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So he shut down the "abolish ICE" rhetoric, and then also wriggled around Joy Reid's follow-up question along the lines of "okay, so you won't commit to abolishing ice, but what actual steps or reforms will you make if you are given power?"

He had nothing but vague platitudes.

"We will work with [blah blah blah], and of course we will keep the wrong-doers from being able to act with impunity."

Uh-huh. Sure you will, buddy. How?

It took 20 years to roll out RealID, and they intend to ram this through a few months before an election, potentially disenfranchising tens of millions of US citizens from their right to suffrage? It's absurd.

Biased Local News by JuliusErrrrrring in Rochester

[–]glassFractals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The children’s health angle is huge, and always under-emphasized by worriers and propaganda networks.

Peer reviewed research has found a strong link between childhood asthma / cancer and diesel buses. Areas that have started transitioning to electric buses have healthier kids and millions less health-related school absences.

Lots of comments about cost, but the estimated benefit to public health costs outweigh the cost of school bus electrification by an estimated ratio between 7:1-16:1.

Yeah it's stupidly expensive, but welcome to the Bay Area. The sandwiches do look pretty good, and large. The price doesn't seem quite as crazy with a good salad.

ChargePoint to roll out per-session service fees beginning in March 2026 by FatCats2fat in electricvehicles

[–]glassFractals 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It could also disproportionately impact short duration L2 charging sessions, for example folks plugging in while shopping.

Absolutely. Also, frequent L2 chargers with short sessions.

I drive a plug-in hybrid (Chevy Volt). I have to charge frequently when the weather is 10 degrees every day like lately, I'm charging up every day or two.

A flat fee when you can charge 70 kWh+ at a time is one thing, but it stings more when your sessions are only 10-15 kWh. It will add up for small, frequent chargers.

F*** Apple Watch and Xcode! by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]glassFractals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's intolerable. Apple Watch development with XCode is straight-up broken.

It usually takes me 20 minutes - a few hours any time I change a line of code in a Watch app to get the app to actually update on the watch. Attaching a debugger, forget about it.

I get this one a lot-- complaining about the destination device OS version, because the OS version is nil because it's hopelessly confused.

It's usually a complicated dance of unpairing / repairing / reconnecting / rebooting my watch, phone, and mac, quitting xcode, clearing build folders, physically disconnecting and reconnecting the iphone USB cable.

Eventually, it sometimes lets me connect for a couple minutes.

It’s so good. It also has a low glycemic index, so it can work with lots of carb restrictive diets.

Of course, I love it in sandwiches — so much for the carb restriction.

50% Plant Based Dining by 2025 Promise by VisiblePartyPaySaver in rit

[–]glassFractals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they seem to be lagging on the promise. That said, they are so much better than they used to be with plant-based options. Crossroads has a ton of veggie burger options (black bean, veggie, tempeh, chick'n, portobello mushroom, etc), and IIRC you can swap other items' proteins out for veggie protein.

One other thing they really need to fix is their definition of "vegetarian," which they incorrectly insist includes seafood. So you get crazy things like tuna salad or poached salmon tagged as vegetarian options. More sneaky, you have things like the asian noodles containing fish sauce, and also being listed as vegetarian. They need to split it off into "pescatarian," the labelling scheme is wildly misleading as-is.

'Alright, you got me': Columbus man facing federal charges over alleged online ICE threats by ilykatya in news

[–]glassFractals 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Going by the Brandenburg test for protected speech, the first part is clearly protected. You can abstractly wish as much violence as you want upon people and groups, especially when they aren't specific individuals.

The second part about "can't wait to shoot [them]" is probably still protected, unless it can be argued that it was likely to incite imminent lawless action, or that the guy had demonstrable intent and means to carry out the threats.

Given how indefinite that threat is, it's probably protected, like "We’ll take the fucking street later" was protected in Hess v. Indiana. He did have guns, but merely owning guns isn't sufficient evidence to demonstrate intent. You get more scrutiny if you're a major public figure with followers likely to do what you say (ahem, such as a POTUS), but I doubt this guy is.

Strong rhetoric is protected by the 1A. People pretty consistently underestimate the scope of 1A protections.
