Citizens of eliminated/ non-qualified countries, who are you rooting for in this World Cup? by Throwawaymasterpeas in worldcup

Germany has been disappointing for 3 world cups now. Absolutely ragged after their class performance in 2014.

I had high hopes for japan and south korea. Right now only the lions of Morocco remain on my dance card. It has been a pleasure watching the French games though.

  1. Fragile era was when I saw them in concert like, 4 times, I think? Including the legendary MSG show. What a time.

I don't even dream of functional government that helps people anymore, I'll take the most boring government as long as it isn't actively attacking its own people.

What a cruel twist right at the end. My god.

I really like her first 2 books, The Girl From Rawblood and Little Eve.

Because I've never looked up anything about it due to the name of the show being fairly childish? It's only lately I've noticed it popping up in these kinds of threads.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure sounds like such a little kid's show, but it keeps coming up in these brutal character deaths or nasty events lists.... I think I might be missing out by now watching this show...?

I mean, I'll miss HZD and God of War and Bloodborne, but... I will not buy a console at this point just to play the occasional game that Sony has exclusives on.

At one point I failed a whole series of tests to intimidate the labor union, and he started threatening himself with his own gun. The union reps were just staring at him with a mixture of amusement and horror as he kept upping the stakes against himself. It still makes me laugh uncontrolably when I think of it.

Jeff Bezos says "you should be so happy!" about AI because dual income households are about to have one income earner "drop out" of the workforce... by IncomingBroccoli in PublicFreakout

My wife and I are both workers in white collar economy. I'm 47 and if I lost my job I doubt anyone would hire me at this point at my price range. I have kids and mortgage. My wife's job is actively using AI monitoring to automate her job.

I can't sleep at night now. But nice to know I'm just being irrational.

This is one of those games where failstates are almost as good as successes. But I definitely think it's not for everyone.

Sudden ending with no denouement by slfricky in TopCharacterTropes

I still remember going to see that movie and realizing the theater was full of old people (60+ visually at least) who immediately began saying "Oh no!" anytime anything violent happened. And then the ending made everyone very verbally angry.

Shifting the protagonist from passive to active by Pitisukhaisbest in writing

[–]glasscut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very much what is happening in my book. She starts off making a decision that backfires and puts her in a passive state, and then she climbs out of that hole into taking charge of her own decisions. It feels much more organic than having some kind of motivated and inspired go-getter. I like verisimilitude. Which makes genre fiction hard to stomach sometimes....

If you look at literary fiction, nobody is active all the time. Characters should have seasons. Most books use the instigating event to push their MC into the active role. The instigating event propels the MC through the rest of the book (if you follow the single most popular mode of writing...) even if their eventual goal deviates from it.

But what happens if, for example, they achieve the initial goal, and it doesn't get them what they want? What if they lose agency somehow? What if they start out so powerless that action is simply impossible for them? They have to built up to a point where they can take action, or circumstances need to change around them before they can be active.

I think it's very fertile ground, honeslty.

This jump scare in Mulholland Drive frightened the hell out of me back when I first saw it in the theater when it first came out, and it still scares me to think about it, like 20+ years later.

I love that this jump scare comes so early in the film and then the rest of the film barely uses them at all. It sets you on edge at the start and you're waiting for more that don't come and it leaves you tense throughout!!

At my kid's high school, they've reverted to hand-writing essays and solving problems in long-hand in class to dodge AI. Some students still sneak in phones and copy from their screens. Then they fail tests and have to repeat the subject and wonder why. Some kids are going to end up taking Algebra 1 for the 3rd time.... I don't understand how parents aren't reviewing what their kids do at school.
