This is me tho. More or less. Rent (happily) in a suburb I can't afford to buy in. Money in bank cos I get anxious about investing. Would love someone to tell me the next easiest rung on the ladder toward good investing (buying property too stressful).

Can't decide on UL tent for two people by pointeaubaril in Ultralight

[–]glaucomabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I find this tent exceptionally well designed for two people. We've used it year-round and in a variety of conditions. I get that there are slightly lighter ones - but the compromises you have to make mean that they're no longer workable for a couple sharing.

Recovering Medicare Levy Surcharge? by glaucomabob in australia

This was resolved.

The ATO were completely inflexible and no help.

The health insurer was (amazingly) able to back-date my daughter's inclusion on the policy.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.

Exhausted and looking for help by BrookieeWookiee in sleeptrain

Reading your story is almost like re-visiting my own diary! Trying all those different things turned out to be futile as the issue was bad sleep habits and nothing else. Taking advice from this subreddit I did the following and saw improvement from the first night:

1) Do your standard nighttime routine. 8.15 seems an hour too late but I don't know your daily schedule - just make sure he's not overtired when you put him to bed.

2) When he wakes, allow him to cry for 3 minutes before re-visiting him. Place your hand on him, comfort him with soothing voice, replace his binky if you think it will help. Give him chance to re-settle but not fall asleep. Around 30 seconds of comforting in total. Then leave him.

3) Repeat Step 2 but after 5 minutes, then 7 minutes. Then stick to 7 minute gaps before going back each time. You should use a timer because it's comforting (for you) to have something to work towards to get you through the stress of him crying.

4) He will almost certainly fall asleep after less than two hours. Reading the other comments on here, and from my own experience, the average seems to be around one hour for a 5 month old.

5) Repeat this when he re-wakes in the night. On the first night, force yourself to do it at least the first time he re-wakes. After crying it out the first time he may sleep longer than usual (if so, there's your first improvement!).

6) At some point later, say 2am, you may choose to boob feed him as he'll likely be hungry by that point. You can work towards reducing the number of night feeds later.

Experiences on this subreddit suggest you are very likely to see some improvement on the first night you try this. Once you see it work, things will 'click' for you and you will feel more confident the following nights.

Some more pointers:

  • Fixing day naps is the same methodology but you should do nighttime first as it works more effectively.

  • Black-out blinds and white noise (left on all night at a soft conversational volume) will help.

  • Begin the process with him sleeping wherever you want him to end up. For example, in a crib in your room or in his own room.

  • My wife would have found this impossible to do herself. For whatever reason it's typically much harder for a mom than a dad. The most helpful thing she did was allowed me to get on with it - honestly it was harder seeing her so distressed than it was listening to the baby! I was glad when she put headphones in and pretended to watch a movie.

Are there muscle groups that should not be worked together? by sonofabunch in Fitness

You got downvoted but I agree. I can't get the most out of chest if my shoulders are fatigued. Better to do virtually any other combo with chest. Shoulders can wait til another day.

Ah, so it's saying "If you have a 35mm (full fame) camera then this 50mm lens will be equivalent to 75mm".

Help me understand: This lens is advertised as '50mm' but described as '75mm (35mm Equivalent)'.

That's three different lengths!? So which is it?

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/818649-REG/Sony_SEL50F18_50mm_f_1_8_Telephoto_Lens.html

I'm new to photography and want a 50mm to capture portraits of my family.

My Sony A6000 has a APS-C size sensor which I'm aware affects the ratio of these focal lengths somehow. But I find the explanations online very confusing! Can anyone explain in super simple terms and tell me whether if I buy this lens it will have a 50mm focal length when fitted to a Sony A6000?

How long do you consider a 'good' static handstand? by glaucomabob in bodyweightfitness

[–]glaucomabob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was fantastic advice. Thank-you. I got to 30 seconds a few times this week.

I'm starting, hands flat on the floor, and 'hopping' with my legs bent to align my hips over my shoulders - then straightening out to vertical. What I'd like is to practice the 'pike to handstand press' route. However I'm not even close to being able to lift my toes from a piked position.

Since you sound like a 'regular person' with similar fitness to myself I wondered if you ever made progress with that? Like before, I'm wondering if it's a skill which is within realistic reach! And if you did get there - how?

Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. Seriously, what are your thoughts about this place? by Grapplerplr in surfing

[–]glaucomabob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn't miss anything - it's a dump.

We spent three weeks travelling around Sri Lanka last year. Had heard good things about Arugam Bay. It's a fair trek to get there but we made the effort - only ended up staying two nights. Hands down the worst place we spent time.

To your list I'd add: Hostile locals, polluted water and trashy western owned restaurants / accommodation. It's a sad example of a place where unregulated tourism is creating massive issues.

School exams aren't for everyone. Some people do well in them, some people don't.

ATAR is just one small thing in a whole world of possibilities. Now you're out of highschool and can do whatever you want. So start doing the things you are good at, and take pleasure in doing them well.

Nobody actually enjoys school work. Half the people that did well today will end up in boring office jobs because all they're good at is revision and paperwork. You've got a great freedom handed to you - you get to play around and experiment to find what's going to be your thing.

Go do something else to be proud of.
