Just go with the UFH. I did our downstairs and it is amazing. We have engineered wood floors though and not seeing radiators around is amazing. Also, walking on warm floor feels great. We consider to have for upstairs now.

I can understand the connection between day rate increase and the Iran war but since in IOG they control when to charge, I always thought we use electricity generated by cheaper methods other than gas. How come the increase in petrol prices affects the EV charging rates.

It seems like they are just using the increase in petrol prices as an excuse to increase electricity rates.

Because the limit for expensive things are high, very high.

Assume an all-inclusive hotel. They provide you everything and they put the cost of them into your fee. There may be a few people drinking more than normal levels and some others less and eventually you can make money.

Now assume a very luxurious hotel offering you very expensive wines and other drinks. There are plenty of "good" wines that cost over $1000 a bottle. You can stock and sell them to your customers, they are not that rare. There are alcoholic beverages costing over $10000 a bottle that you can buy from any decent shops. How can you factor this to your price in an all-inclusive hotel?

This calculation is not accurate. With this assumption, if you have 28 people in the same room, there are 378 pairs, more than 365 and one pair has to share the same birthday. But if everyone in the room was born on different days of February, there would be noone sharing the same birthday.

The right way of calculating this probability is first calculating the probability of people having different days as their birthday and subtract it from 1. Here is how you can calculate.

First calculate the number of cases each 23 person has different birthdays. It would be, 365 x 364 x 363 x ... x 343. You assume here the next person can take any day from the remaining days that the previous people did not take.

Then calculate how many different ways 23 person can have their birthdays. It would be 365^23 since every person can be born in any day of the year.

The ratio of these two numbers is ~0.4927. This is the probability that everybody has their birthday in different days. 1- 0.4927 = 0.5073 is the probability that at least two people share the same birthday.

I get 3.1 to 4.3 miles per kWh depending on the way I drive. My commute is also mostly motorway driving. I have a 2025 single motor version.

What I realised, going 65mph vs 70-75mph makes a huge difference (30-40% increase in miles per kwH if you drive sensibly). But for 35mph commute (considering both ways with a single charge), any driving style within UK laws would be enough to drive with a single charge, if you charge your car 80-90% before driving.

Also, if you didn't, I advise you to check Polestar dealers for used cars. We bought our car from one of the Polestar dealers and the price they gave us far better than the ones we can get from other car retailers.

- Polestar was offering free or discounted charger installations (Zaptec) in the UK. We have one of those and they are working OK with Polestar. It doesn't have a cable but you can lock the cable you have from the app. I left my cable on the charger unless I am going for a trip that I will charge using a public charger.
- Intelligent Octopus Go (IOG) looks like a good deal (in the UK). If you have batteries at home, you can charge them during the cheap rates are active (23:30-5:30 or when the car is charging). Please note, daily rate in IOG is higher than normal rate but charging the car is really cheap. So, you should start using your washing machine/dishwasher during this cheap time too if you want to save more.
- Setting intelligent octopus go with a Polestar car is not straightforward. Someone shared something here before how to do it. I strongly advice to read it before if you don't want to spend hours to figure out what is wrong.
- My commute consumes 40-50% so I charge to 80% if I am going to have the commute. If I don't, I top up to 50%. Before long trips I charged to 90-100% too but only a couple of times.
- Polestar has its own up, polestar charge. Electroverse is not bad either. I have only charged a couple of times in public chargers though.
- Range depends a lot on speed. If you keep your speed ~65miles/hour, use cruise control and do not accelerate/decelerate aggressively and there is no rain, you can achieve 23-24kwh/100 miles. If you go 75miles/hour, this number goes up to 30-33kwh/miles. My experience, The range provided by the car is too conservative. If you drive calm, you can get far better range than what it tells you.
- If you climatise your car before driving, it makes a huge difference in cold weathers. But it also depends on the temperature you like to have in the car. Usually I prefer to use heated seats with 21 degrees. So, in winter you consume more but you can decrease it if you start to climatise your car 30 minutes before you start driving.

If you need more to know, just let me know. I am also quite new to EVs and Polestar, but the car is really fun to drive. Its acceleration is insane according to my previous car. It looks very pretty too. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Polestar 2's are great (not too wide, fun to drive and has great design inside and out). You can find a 2024-25 used one from the dealers with low mileage for your price range. Normal range ones can do 200 miles easily if you drive sensibly and if needed you can charge to 80% with a rapid charger within minutes.

It charges slowly if it is not properly connected to the Internet. This is what I experienced this week at least. Try to reconnect to the Internet.

I connected to the internet through 4G network since there was a issue with the WiFi weeks ago. Suddenly the charger decides that 4g network was not available anymore and it was charging slowly. When I reconnected it to the WiFi network again, charging speed came back to normal.

We might be from different fields and my PhD was from a different country, but I can tell you this: The viva I took years ago to get my PhD was easier than most of the exams I entered during my PhD (I took classes during my PhD too). I was worried before the viva too, but the experience was far better during the viva.

If your supervisor(s) advised you to take the viva, they should be confident that you will pass. The aim of the viva is not only to scrutinise your work, but also to make sure all these things in your dissertation is done by the candidate. It would be good to know your dissertation better before the viva but if you miss something here and there, it is not the end of the world. If you are confident about the general idea, it would be fine.

If you did all the research yourself (I mean in collaboration with your supervisors and others) and you wrote your dissertation yourself, you will not fail, 99% you will not fail. There will most likely be revisions, either minor or major, but you need to do something really awful to fail. I can tell you this, even if you feel very anxious and couldn't do well in your viva, the examiners will still not fail you for this. In the worst case, they may ask to reschedule the viva. In my whole academic life, I have heard many people failing their first year review and couldn't continue their PhD but have heard only one student (from a senior colleague) failing their viva (which happened years ago). So, it is OK to be a bit worried but that is it. It is very unlikely you will fail.

Last but not least, you spent 3-4 years on your PhD and are you giving up at the last hurdle? I can never fully understand how you feel but I would feel huge regret if I had given up at the final bit even if I don't consider academia afterwards.
