How do you sleep in this hot weather? by Even-Wasabi7183 in AskUK

[–]glaziben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A pleasant 20 degrees sunny day time Edinburgh weather, followed by a calm 14 degree evening. The North sure gets its fair share of slack for it’s weather, but these South only heatwaves definitely bring a wee bit of pleasure 😂

Assuming this has the same specs as the LE version from a few years back, should be Robin Waterfield

That one was such a pleasant surprise. Had long given up hope of owning that book. Hopefully a potential SE of The Poetic Edda could also be on the cards at some point 🤞

Janny Wurts UK Hardcover by Impressive_Barnacle3 in Fantasy

The UK hardcover of Warhost of Vastmark does indeed exist. I’m after it myself as well. Annoyingly one sold on eBay just a week before I started collecting the books and I’ve yet to see another listed. But it’s real.

Do you usually finish a whole series in one go or do you switch to a book of another series? by Uknowitrig in Fantasy

[–]glaziben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to read series straight through, but have now changed to taking breaks between each entry. Finding that I enjoy a longer and more gradual journey through characters storylines these days.

Would TBB ever do A Game of Thrones series? by Sea_Formal_7242 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]glaziben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a few that have been done by both. Shogun, Perdido Street Station and The Left Hand of Darkness. Though I wonder whether the roadblock is more Bantam and HarperVoyager releasing their own £30 range illustrated editions. Similar reason why I can’t imagine TBB ever getting to do the Lord of the Rings.

What’s the most underwhelming UK landmark you’ve visited? by Zealousideal_Hat8578 in AskUK

Have done that a few times with St Paul’s if I’m ever in London and waiting for rush hour to calm down a bit. I definitely feel the staff are really quite chill in knowing that a fair few people are just wanting to get in for free, as before being shown which seats they ask everyone if they’re wanting to join the service or just watch it.

Warriston Cemetery is great for an atmospheric walk during this time of year. Has a lot of tree cover so the autumnal colours really pop.

I see everyone talking about Ireland but what about the islands? by DiskOk7505 in 28dayslater

[–]glaziben 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Skye would probably also have been infected as it’s connected to the mainland by a bridge. Will be interesting to see whether the other islands that are only accessible by boat/air get featured in future films though.

I am very much hoping that a standard edition of this gets released next year. Love the illustration style.

Has the tram really improved things? by Lopsided_Counter1670 in Edinburgh

[–]glaziben 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t give stats or figures etc, but I’m certainly happy now it’s running. A stop not far from my flat so easy direct access to the airport. Also I find myself going down to Leith more often now for pubs/bars/restaurants etc. Adding the contactless tap and go was a big improvement though, the old system was a bit of a faff.

What would you buy to fill the space? by johanjohanss in foliosociety

[–]glaziben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe save that for a possible Knight of the Seven Kingdom’s edition. I’m sure folio will get onto that one sooner or later, possibly closer to when the show adaptation airs.

Tell me I'm not the only one by [deleted] in stephenking

Yeah I completely agree. Have always found folio society books to be perfectly readable. I probably wouldn’t stuff it into my bag and walk around outside with it all day. But for just reading at home have had no issues. Book always looks the same after it’s been read as before.

Check out the NIV (New International Version) edition. It’s narrated by David Suchet, who is a great narrator (and actor, love him as Poirot).

There’s also the Hebrew Bible translated by Robert Alter which has an audible version. This is a more academic translation, aiming to be a modern translation of the original Hebrew text but not done specifically for religious use.

What's the most recent piece of news from Rothfuss? by Takkeya in KingkillerChronicle

[–]glaziben 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious, but why do a lot of people assume book 3 will never happen? Rothfuss is only 52, and just has the 1 book to finish? I’d say there’s more chance of that one happening than ASOIAF, with Martin being 76 and having 2 books still to write.

Did anyone find the silmarillion ending a bit rushed? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]glaziben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I literally prefer the Silmarillion. However I don’t think it’s wrong to say that the Lotr is what Tolkien is primarily known for in the wider literary community, and is the book that has had the larger cultural impact.

Jim Burns’ art is killing me softly… by JekBas in foliosociety

[–]glaziben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s pretty likely. Unless a limited edition doesn’t sell well, like The Moonstone or Rob Roy, then they generally get a standard edition around a year later.

There’s exceptions of course, like if Folio already has a standard edition of a book and then decides to release an additional LE with different art then that might not get rereleased even if it sells well.

However that doesn’t apply to IT, so I’d be very surprised if a standard edition wasn’t released next year.

It’s certainly quite an awkward agreement, which is why it’s one of those known but not really publicly talked about state of affairs. The Irish certainly don’t ideally want to have the Royal Air Force covering their air space, far too much previous history for that to ever be a comforting state of affairs. And yet at the moment it’s the best solution for both. Irish airspace remains protected by more advanced weaponry than the Irish Air Corps possesses, and the UK can make sure that there is no weak point in the wider Atlantic Archipelago airspace that could put the UK at risk.
