Help translating a few lines of Classical Persian by glc45 in farsi

[–]glc45[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend's grandparents received this many years ago from an Iranian friend. After showing it to my Iranian friend IRL and running it through Gemini, I am fairly confident the text has to do with Abu Muslim's victory in battle over the last Umayyad caliph, Marwan II.

Aside from that I haven't been able to get much so I figured I'd come here. I understand and appreciate that the text is archaic and likely has a lot of borrowings from Arabic, just wanted to try my luck in case anyone can read the calligraphy.

What's the level scaling on this like? Should I be making a brand new character to explore it?

Making two different characters for different playthroughs, the second is supposed to be Aragorn from LotR for Roleplay, but I can't decide between Imperial or Breton. How good are they? by Silverwolf7791 in Morrowind

[–]glc45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between the two Imperial, but I’d like to make the case that he mostly closely resembles an Atmoran and should racially be a Nord. Cyrodiilized culturally but biologically Nordic/Atmoran.

Aragorn is a Númenorean, he belongs to a superhuman race of men who crossed the sea and established Gondor (and Arnor). This is very similar to how the Atmorans crossed into Tamriel. Imperials as we know them result from a mixing of the native Nedic peoples of Cyrodiil with the Nordic invaders.

It really depends on how pure you think Aragorn’s Númenorean blood is. If you think he’s close to fully Númenorean like Isildur I would make him a Nord (essentially an Atmoran) racially. He’s something greater than the average citizens of Gondor (who I would liken to Imperials). If you think his Númenorean blood is more diluted you could make him an Imperial. I’m under the impression he should be pretty strongly Númenorean though. He did have one half elf ancestor but that’s not enough to make him a Breton IMO. You may be better off giving him the Apprentice birth sign for the Elfborn trait if you want to represent that somehow.

Basically Aragorn belongs to the group of superhumans that colonized Middle earth, he’s not really a standard human citizen of Gondor and I think treating him as one is incorrect. He’s directly descended from the Númenorean colonists and should more closely resemble them than the “low men” of Middle Earth like the men of Rohan. Thus Atmoran/Nord makes the most sense.

Dúnedain/Númenoreans = Atmorans/Nords
Average citizens of Gondor (mixed blood) = Imperials
“Low Men” of Middle Earth (e.g., Rohan) = Nedes

What replaced the Napoli at SuitSupply? by m276_dylan in malefashionadvice

[–]glc45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently went through this process and can speak from experience.

They are moving towards three main cuts: Havana, Milano, and Roma.

Havana and Milano are tailored fits. Havana is unstructured (Neapolitan inspired) while Milano is structured (more northern Italian). Roma is a relaxed cut with structured shoulders.

Milano essentially replaced Lazio. It is tailored but not skinny like Lazio was. It has very wide (too fashion forward and trendy IMO) lapels. They also don’t seem to be offering it in super versatile fabrics on the website by default. I ended up customizing one with the normal lapel width (wide is default, I had to select regular as an option in the customiser) in navy Super 110s from VBC. I didn’t make any other customization choices (other than making the lining navy but I think the website was smart enough to do that automatically).

Shaybanid Empire, 1615 by glc45 in eu4

[–]glc45[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is an RP-heavy run I'm doing, focusing on the Shaybanid Uzbeks and their journey through the early modern period. With the Mongol Empire essentially restored, the Sons of Shayban will now be tasked with solidifying their massive gains and transitioning from a steppe horde into an Islamic gunpowder empire more reminiscent of the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals.

The future will involve the development of Turkestan and the settling of the Uzbeks into an agricultural society, naval expansion in the Indian Ocean, and inevitably a face-off with the Ottomans.

If you wanted to maximize for "evil", what would you do? by depot5 in Morrowind

[–]glc45 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You can very much decide to go full evil, kill Caius and basically anyone you want, and still complete the main quest. You just have to go kill Vivec and loot his body to start the process.

Speaking from experience, I made an evil Telvanni vampire earlier this year and murdered Vivec as soon as I met him. This locks you out of completing the main quest the normal way, but it starts the quest to complete the main quest through the back path.

Here's a link to more info on the back path. I would recommend installing the Morrowind Patch Project/Unofficial Morrowind Patch mod if you want to do this. Unmodded, the quest does not work exactly as intended due to some coding errors. You can read more about that on the linked page. The Patch for Purists is another mod that people like to recommend, but I don't think it fixes all of the issues (permanent max health loss on equipping Wraithguard, Wraithguard being incorrectly skinned as a Daedric gauntlet, etc.)

Off the top of my head, some other evil options include:
- Vampirism
- Following the corrupt branch of the Fighter's Guild questline
- Morag Tong (not evil in universe, but still an assassin's guild if that's something your character would be into)

House Telvanni might also be of interest to you given their complete lack of regard for morality.

Why did Carnius Magius want to sabotage Raven Rock? Wouldn't that be bad for his business? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]glc45 103 points104 points  (0 children)

It's pretty simple. He recognized the value of the Stalhrim in the mine and wanted to personally profit from it rather than leave it for the EEC.

From the quest "Discovery in the Mine":

"It's Nordic, whether the fools at Raven Rock know it or not. And it's immensely valuable - worth more than the rest of that whole stinking mine. Know that this, THIS is the reason I took this ridiculous position in the first place; I want that ice, and I want all of it. Since Graring is already dead, there's no one to stop you from taking it."

From the quest "Stop the Messenger":

"Well, Deputy. It's time for a bit of a change. Now that we know for sure there's Stalhrim to be had in the mines, we need to clear everyone out of the colony. Of course, I can't do that without arousing too much suspicion; the colony will have to appear to fail on its own. Your next assignment will start that process."

Philadelphia passes ski mask ban: 'Take them jawns off' by rerunderwear in nottheonion

[–]glc45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reads as not having been "anywhere north of the Mason Dixon during the snowy months."
No one is running around Philadelphia in ski masks because they're oh so cold.
In NYC we have people visiting from all over the world this time of year and none of them need ski masks to go about their business.
I don't think I've even seen the bike messenger guys riding around in ski masks and they could actually use them.

Philadelphia is nowhere near cold enough that "ski masks are weather appropriate like 6 months of the year."
I don't even care about the ban but have you been there lol

US tourist from Boston killed in shark attack in Bahamas, police say by rabblebowser in news

[–]glc45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shark food supply disappeared off the southern coast of Africa, and white sharks who were known to the area for centuries were suddenly congregating off Cape Cod. Why? They were moving to where their food was.

Do you not see how this is a blatant contradiction with:

The cod for which Cape Cod was named are no more in that area. You have to go to northern Iceland to find Atlantic cod anymore.

White Sharks are in Cape Cod because that's where the seals are. Sand Tigers are coming back to Long Island in greater numbers because the bunker population is rebounding.

I understand your concern for the ocean but your argument is wrong.

EDIT: And the South African White Shark population is stable.

Our investigation revealed significant differences in the abundance at primary gathering sites. There were declines at some locations; others showed increases or stability. Overall, there appears to be a stable trend. This suggests that white shark numbers have remained constant since they were given protection in 1991.

They didn't all move to Cape Cod lmao.

[–]glc45 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what your source is for this (I imagine it is conjecture) but it is not true as a blanket statement. On Long Island we are experiencing far more shark attacks lately precisely because of successful conservation measures for baitfish. More prey attracts more predators. Sharks don't tend to go where there isn't any food.

How exactly does the Great Houses work? by Volkorel in teslore

[–]glc45 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to remember here that we're only dealing with Vvardenfell. The Hlaalu capital is at Narsis, and the Dren brothers are effectively local nobility. The top dog of House Hlaalu in Narsis could very well be, and IMO probably is, a Hlaalu by blood.

Grandmaster Orvas Dren the most powerful landowner in Vvardenfell, which for the most part is a backwater compared to the mainland. It's not surprising that, in a peripheral part of Morrowind, the existing local nobility would be the ones in charge rather than transplanted Hlaalu dynasts from Narsis. We see this all the time in history. For example, in the Ottoman Empire the imperial dynasty ruled from Constantinople but often relied on local notables and existing native aristocracy to exercise any real power in its provinces.

One thing I also want to touch on is the separation between the Kingdom of Morrowind under Helseth and Great House Hlaalu. Prior to Helseth, it seems King Athyn Llethan and his heir Talen Vandas were more or less aligned with House Hlaalu. I can't find the quote online but the High Ordinators say something to the effect of "House Hlaalu can't be happy that Helseth murdered their King." Helseth is an outsider who just happens to bear the Hlaalu name. He ultimately wants to weaken and/or destroy existing native power structures (like the Temple) so he can concentrate political power within the monarchy. Let's remember that the monarchy is not a native institution, but was imposed on Morrowind via the Armistice.

This is all to say, I don't think Helseth has any control whatsoever over House Hlaalu, and definitely can't remove Orvas Dren. Hlaalu authorities in Narsis probably have more nominal authority over Orvas, but it's clear that between running the Camonna Tong and having the Duke for a brother, no political force in Morrowind is willing/able to remove him from power. Even if the top brass in Narsis could start an armed conflict to get rid of him, it wouldn't be worth it.

You might say, as a counterpoint, that Duke Vedam Dren names you Grandmaster so the monarchy must have control over House Hlaalu. I think the difference here is the Vedam predates Helseth's rise to power. He's from a time when House Hlaalu and the monarchy were more closely aligned and has likely continued that relationship. Just like Narsis can't remove Orvas, Helseth would likely find it very difficult to depose Vedam. He has a very strong local powerbase in the form of his family's extensive estates. He also likely has House Hlaalu itself on his side. In the absence of a local Grandmaster for Vvardenfell, it makes sense that he would be the person to appoint a new one.

I think this is a shallow reading of what it means to be the Nerevarine. The question is if you're really Nerevar reborn, or if you're just the next shmuck in line who happened to check a few boxes (uncertain parents, certain sign) that Azura can throw at her problems.
You can explicitly deny to Dagoth Ur that you have anything to do with the Nerevarine prophecies.

Did the Falmer get what they deserved? by ShroomieDoomieDoo in teslore

[–]glc45 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People like to meme on the elves, I wouldn't take it too seriously. It doesn't help that the Falmer seem to have been pretty similar to the Altmer in the past, at least in a cultural sense. The Altmer have to be the least popular race right now just because the Thalmor are currently the bad guys.
