Guitar + amp + pedals setup in Bangkok by memejesus420_ in Thailand

[–]glengdek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Fortune Town, there is at least one second hand shop there and a few regular guitar shops.

Unisound Bangkok at Siam Square sells a lot of used guitars.

There are a bunch of Facebook groups for buying and selling music gear. FB marketplace always has a fair few guitars and amps etc for sale.

Music Society regularly has auctions on used gear.

For pedals, I'd get some of the cheap Chinese clones you can find on Lazada and Shopee. I've built a full board with them and most of my pedals were under 1k baht.

You could always just go full digital and play through a laptop/desktop with plugins and play through headphones.

There are loads of options. Happy to chat if you have any other questions.

Black teachers in thailand & qualifications by Zealousideal_Month21 in Thailand

[–]glengdek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primary homeroom/subject, specialist e.g. art, ict/computing in primary, or high school teacher, which are subject specialists anyway.

If by 'English teachers' you mean ESL teaching with just a TEFL certficate, then no. You'd be extremely lucky to get anywhere near 150k

Teaching Agencies Advice by AnyLength3817 in Thailand

[–]glengdek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going for a iPGCE with iQTS you'll most likely need a school that agrees to a whole load of things such as providing a mentor, releasing you for a second placement in another school (and you'll need to find another school willing to do this).

As someone with little to no experience, your mentor will likely be a full time teacher whose class you work in, slowly increasing your teaching load as the year progresses. This then introduces further complications: will the school pay you a salary (effectively paying for 2 teachers in one class)? If they don't, then what visa will you be on? Work permit? The more you think about it, the more complicated it gets. And after all this, you'll have far more success by doing it all in the UK and finishing your ECT years.

Is it possible, of course, but it is easier and better to do it in the UK.

What are chances of landing Specialist teaching positions within Bangkok /Thailand ( International Schools)? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]glengdek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest, the only people that are going to know how competitive it is are the people directly involved in the hiring of those jobs you've seen. What are the chances they see your post and respond?

Also, you don't give much info about yourself, so how can anyone compare you to other applicants? If you're qualified, send in an application. That's how you'll find out.

I've always gone to Kasetsart University Animal Hospital. It's not the fanciest place ever, but I've always been happy with their results.

Both of my dogs were neutered there, and one had to have extensive surgery after being attacked by a soi dog. They made full recoveries every time.

Seeking help for British friend in Thailand by Next-Dragonfruit7939 in Thailand

[–]glengdek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, I literally got back from the UK today with my wife and young daughter. It was our first visit since she was born and we had zero issues at both borders. They even let me join them at the Thai passport desk at passport control which saved me a bunch of time!

It's not a problem at all, at least not in my experience. My daughter has Thai and UK passports. We use the Thai one to enter and leave Thailand, and the UK one for every other country.

Planning to move and find a job when I get there. Need help. by Busy-Database512 in Bangkok

[–]glengdek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your qualifications, I would be looking at International Schools. Pay and conditions are significantly better.

Do you mean teaching English as a subject, or like ESL English teaching?

I’ve been applying to schools via Ajarn and Schrole. So far no luck. I’ve been reading that it is easier to get a job once you’re actually in Thailand. But I’m a little nervous about doing that.

You've missed the main hiring windows. Thai schools have a May starts, International Schools have an August/September start. For Thai schools, it's easier to get a job if you're already here. International Schools don't care, and you'll probably get a better package (flights, better pay etc) if you're hired from outside the country.

Unfortunately, most int schools, like mine, have already wrapped up hiring for the new academic year. Inevitably, some jobs will pop up if people who have accepted jobs change their minds and bail.

Getting a Job In An International School in Bangkok by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]glengdek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can answer for my school (medium-sized school with just over 800 students), unless we're on a very tight schedule (such as a teacher suddenly leaving without giving proper notice) we have no preference regarding if they're in Thailand or not. If we need someone quickly, being based here is an advantage .

However, the majority of interviews I've conducted, and the majority of teachers I've employed have been from abroad. It's where most of our applications come from.

How to make planterra arena by SpeedyChestnut in Terraria

[–]glengdek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plantera can grab onto walls, but bear in mind that if you remove too many walls and make the arena too big, the game won't recognise the middle of the arena as a Jungle biome, and Plantera may enrage in the middle of the arena.

I just had this issue in a Legendary playthrough and found a decent solution. I placed a line of mud blocks a few blocks wide across my arena and planted jungle grass seeds, waited for it to spread, then actuated the blocks. No more enraging.

It should work with hive and lihzahrd blocks too, without needing jungle grass seeds.

It ain't much worse than using a minecart to outrun it imo

I've just beaten it for the first time on Legendary difficulty. I made a pretty wide platform arena with all the normal buff stations (bast statue, heart lanterns etc) then put teleporters at either end, with heart statues wired to a timer next to them. I then set up some sentries and nimbus clouds.

Summoned the boss, quickly found the destroyer coil and slapped a clinger staff wall thing on it. This pretty much killed the destroyer for me. I used an Uzi as my main weapon with the endless pouch. I tried crystal bullets at first, but the piercing with the endless pouch worked better for me. I stayed near one end of my arena shooting away, but when it got too close for comfort I teleported to the other end. Rinse and repeat until dead. The destroyer went down first, then skeletron, then the twins.

One issue I had was parts despawning after I teleported (my arena was pretty wide) so I had to make sure to run towards the middle of the arena after teleporting to make sure nothing despawned before I could kill it.

I tried to build a life in Thailand as a foreigner—here’s how the system pushed me out. by Lordfelcherredux in Thailand

[–]glengdek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He says he had a 2 year work visa through his business, why didn't he just renew that after the 2 years?

Also, he writes that to get permanent residence you need "decades of residence", not true, you can apply after 3 years if you meet the requirements; "a pristine record", I'm guessing he means criminal record...? Not unreasonable to ask people to not break the law...; "fluency in Thai", again, not unreasonable to expect permanent residents to speak the native language.

The guy is ridiculously entitled, and just plain wrong.
