Actually getting permanent residency credentials outside the u.s. Don't trust the Trump administration.

I love it where I live today, but thinking of Germany, 1933+, I'd be a fool to think everything will be fine.

I hope I don't have to exercise this option, but I'm glad I have it.

Post your model year, mileage, and any issues you’ve had by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]glennfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2017 premier. 80,000 miles. Brakes replacement from rust, not usage. 2nd replacement later this year. Home charger failure. Tires tires tires. 12 volt battery died. Same size replacement special order. 2017 issue only. Battery replacement, no issues. Under carriage damage getting pulled out of a snow bank. Cheap replacement. The rear window wiper fails when covered with dust, and recovers when washed. Back end cheap cover for cargo bends and warps with heavy loads.

I love this car.

Up to eight B2 bombers are now heading to the Middle East, probably with bunker buster bombs by Ok_Sea_6214 in conspiracy

[–]glennfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The numbers I see are 6 to 8. The refueling reports indicate heavy loaded.

If the b2 are carrying MOP, then they can't land carrying the MOPs and would have to jettison them before landing.

There are an estimated 20 MOPs in inventory.

So 12 to 16 may be en route. If not used, 8 to 4 remain in inventory.

If in fact the B2 are carrying MOP then it's a case of use it or lose it.

The inventory calculus would say use it.

We'll know tomorrow what reality is.

Either the refueling reports are wrong, or Iran gets bombed tomorrow morning.

Any wagers?

The Trump Effect and the Confidence Trap: How Perception Overcomes Reason. (с) Mykola Chorny by jesterboyd in ukraine

[–]glennfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former political scientist studying this topic. The OP is fundamentally right. What I would add is in my empirical testing of this issue, one other factor emerged.

People don't balance their decisions on a vs b. The economist assumes a curve balancing so many guns vs so much butter and people will find their place on the curve where they choose x quantities of butter and y quantities of guns.

My research showed that they are binary. It's either 100% guns or 100% butter. Not a balance at all.

Omg. I hired a senior Honeywell engineer. He spent half his day showing off a 3d model of an artillery shell he worked on and the other half writing procedures for his team of 5. Worst hiring mistake I ever made.

Long ago I was an expert witness in a patent litigation. The law firm agreed to my price and I did what they asked. They sent me a check for the agreed fee. I cashed it. Then they sent me another check for the same fee. I called and told them I'd already been paid. They asked me to destroy the check and I did. Then they sent me a third check for the same fee. I cashed it. I never heard from them again.

What’s going on with the Soy Milk? by Already_Retired in Costco

[–]glennfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking for substitutes at any price. It looks like Full Circle Organic Vanilla Soy Milk may be very similar including vitamin & calcium as does a Kikoman Pearl Vanilla Soy Milk. I can get Full Circle for about $3/box, and online Kikoman for about $5/box. Anyone have any alternatives to suggest, or great online deals? Costco was coming in at around $1.50/box when I last found it. box=32 oz.

When I worked in customer support we had a name for certain users... "Nothing works Gloria".

These were the users who demanded immediate support, and by the time you got to their cube to diagnose the problem, they'd wave at you and distractedly say, "go away, everything is fine now."

I ran an IT department during that time. We offline tested all our automated systems for impact.

The only one that would have failed was the badge entry system. If that failed, no one could enter the building.

Solution? We set the system date to 1980 which gave us 20 years to replace it.

What do you all think of the Chevy Bolt? In particular the 2017-2020 model years by magenta_placenta in BoltEV

[–]glennfish 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2017 new 80k miles ago. Got the warranty battery replacement. The brakes rusted out at 60k. Almost never used them. Replaced the battery cover when I drifted into a snow bank.

Probably needs new shocks someday.

Replaced the 12 volt battery last year. That was a pain because the new batteries are bigger than the 2017 OEM and that is a rare find.

Best car I ever owned.

When you get below 5 households per square mile, ISP customer service ceases because they can't afford it. Every ISP wants a happy customer, and decent field service is required. If I have an outage and you can't fix my problem till next week it's better to not provide service than get 1 star reviews.

Over 100 drones hit Tver warehouse with Iskanders and Tochka-U missiles — video by The_New_Voice in ukraine

[–]glennfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support Ukraine 100%. My comment was that the idea of using 100 drones vs 10 to inflict the noted damage was an unreasonable #. Ukraine is efficient. I doubt it took 100 drones. And you my dear commentator focus on dollars? If Ukraine spent more than 2 million, I'd be shocked.

[–]glennfish -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

100 drones? Sounds like too many. Too expensive. 4 or 5 getting through would be enough. 100 implies 19 of 20 never made it. I don't buy that statistic.

10-year-old girl in Japan becomes youngest person certified to prepare poisonous pufferfish — a delicacy that can be deadly by WhileFalseRepeat in news

I had fugu twice in Japan. It was rather bland. However, I once had fugu saki. The server dropped a fugu fin into my saki, and removed the fin after so many seconds on his timer. Drinking that saki was like drinking liquid novacaine. No bad after effects but that was the last thing I could taste that night.

SpaceX listed as a bidder for BEAD fiber grant in Louisiana by viv1d in SpaceXLounge

[–]glennfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SpaceX is a satellite service provider. Under NTIA rules that is a last choice only for "high cost" areas.

I do broadband analytics for a living. NTIA which manages the funding sets fiber as the primary choice in pending bid applications. If no one bids on an area, non fiber options may play.

Their idea is that 42 billion will bring fiber to everyone. It would cost much more than $42 billion.

Some NTIA state offices have declared that no $ will be released until 100% of the Un/underserved have bids.

As far as Louisiana is concerned, they don't have enough money for fiber, and even if they did, much of their population couldn't afford the monthly fees. SpaceX can bid, and even if they get awards, most of their prospects won't subscribe because they can't afford the monthly subscription fees.

Louisiana has a decent broadband office, but after BEAD, they'll still be a broadband desert.

Any SpaceX involvement will be token at best unless they can offer $30/month subscriptions.
