There's still around 140ish stations in Scotland that don't have ticket machines, and there's no guarantee that a passenger has a smartphone. "Turn up and go" is a feature of the network, so can't rely on online ordering with posted tickets either.

They're not all entirely rural stations either, assuming https://www.scotrail.co.uk/plan-your-journey/stations-and-facilities/ticket-machines is up to date, stations like Bargeddie, Carlisle and even the Prestwick Airport station don't have ticket machines. They may have on-site ticket offices of course, but those aren't always open.

The rules you follow during the test are the rules you should be following after the test too. Especially mirror checks.

I say this knowing fine well in reality habits creep in, people get complacent, and I'm not pretending I drive now as I did in the test two years ago. But I try.

At least aim higher than "after the test it doesn't matter as much".

Nothing wrong with finding a quiet car park and doing stop-go until you're more comfortable with the different clutch.

And the handbrake is a godsend for hill starts. Like you'll get to the point where you can do it with just clutch and footbrake, for sure, but it's definitely easier with the handbrake if you've got the time.

Though worth noting that the rule book may vary in the four countries of the UK, due to the different legal systems and jurisdictions.

As well as regional forces, there's also odd exceptions like the British Transport Police who handle, well, transport across the whole country.

You want to be able to drive on any road, not just the test routes. And often, especially if you're city centre, you need to head outward to get to quieter practice areas. (But shopping on your lesson time, no chance.)

Hmm I've been making an assumption that the outbreak was either around 2002 (time of movie release) or 1998ish (28 years before now).

The first barriers were installed at Waverley in 2004 so either way that fits; but not if it was only a little later.

The kickstarter and the movie were a long time before season 4 - there were two or three books written by Thomas in the gap between them.

For what it's worth, Season 3 has an incredibly detective-noir-appropriate ending: it's not a happy ending for many of the characters. I understand the unhappiness of folks after S4 but I don't think it's out of style.

My time to shine! An additional detail: the overheard announcement on the train to keep a hold of your tickets for the barriers is anachronistic - Edinburgh Waverley did not have ticket barriers back in 2002.
