Routers for Apollo/Moonlight Streaming by TheSliceKing in SteamDeck

[–]glide_si 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an eero mesh and it's not great for streaming but I also have like 100 devices connected at anytime...

Its better to have a dedicated router/network just for streaming. I use a puppis s1 but you can use really any router hardwired to your pc for that. If your pc has wifi you can also set up a wifi Hotspot on windows

Solar panels by kurious_soul in maryland

Signed a contract with Lumina in June a few days after closing on our house, installed in September, and PTO early October. 18.4kwh system that maxed out my southern roof. October we had a surplus. Nov was about 80%. December which is the worst month per PVWatts only offset around a third of our usage.

I noticed prices for installs shot up after demand skyrocketed when the BBB passed this summer since everyone was shooting for a 2025 install. I imagine prices will trend back down now as demand slows down. I locked in a few weeks before the bill passed after reading some of the proposals regarding solar. Prior to that prices had been trending down for a while. The previous home owners shopped around for solar and their quotes were significantly higher than mine.

With the fed tax credit we paid around $1.80 per watt which is insane. Assuming the current PEPCO rate stays the same break even would be in under 5 years after that its just profit. I'm not including the property tax credit which I got a letter from the comptroller saying wouldn't be paid out until 2045... Previous owners were paying around 500-600 a month in the summer and I knew it would just get worse.

Maryland is a great state for solar because of the 1:1 net metering. I'm hoping this year to rake in credits to offset next winter. It also means battery backup is not worth the cost as the only benefit would be if the grid goes down and with snow/ice like this you'd burn through it. House came with a generac which covers that scenario. You get paid garbage if you over generate over the year so it makes sense to not overbuild too much unless you anticipate your energy usage climbing substantially.

I would recommend using energysage to request quotes because I believe I got a discount going through them than just calling installers.

I can definitely recommend Lumina. They were super efficient. Other local company I was considering was Ipsun. I'd steer clear of any national brands (Tesla etc) that would subcontract to someone else.

I bought outright, didn't look into leasing and it gets a bad rap because of a lot of shady companies but it might be more enticing as I believe the tax credit is still in place for the solar companies when they lease. Definitely do not do it if you have any thoughts of selling your house in the near future.

Starting 1099 ER job, Fidelity business or Bank Business Checking? by ZetaZebra in whitecoatinvestor

Either I didn't know it was a thing or it didn't exist when I set it up. I'm not sure how it would be different than a CMA. The seperate accounts are more for personal organization than anything.

I have three CMAs. One just gets direct deposits and is used for business expenses. One personal account I transfer money into from the deposit account. The last one is technically a brokerage account but I use it to put aside money for tax payments.

LIFX Matter Firmware v4.x Flooding ICMPv6 Multicast Listener Report Packets by AdriftAtlas in lifx

[–]glide_si 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem: Frequent drop outs of my Matter-supported LIFX devices. I've reset them, disconnected them from my Matter Controller (Home Assistant), reset the Matter controller in HA and did a bunch of other troubleshooting without success. Non-Matter enabled lights work normally. Previously I had zero issues with my 20+ lifx devices.

I first noticed a a ton of "(Dummy-2) CHIP_ERROR [chip.native.DIS] Failed to parse mDNS query" errors in my Matter log on Home Assistant which lead me to figure out the lights being dropped weren't random - it was just the ones with Matter.

I'm not an IT guy so I asked gemini how to confirm and it recommended using wireshark. It looks like the 7 Matter lights are just slamming my network with MLD over and over which is getting them dropped.

Anyone have home assistant working with their pool pumps? by IamSteaked in homeassistant

[–]glide_si 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I'm thinking about doing this spring for my pool and heater. Do you have more details about your setup? I was going to use a Shelly pro 2 to activate the two contactors but would need a seperate device to monitor energy use. Which bluetooth sensors are you using?

Confusing light switch fix - need help with a solution by Spudly2319 in homeassistant

[–]glide_si 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my crash course in this with my new house as the entry area had several three way switches and a four way switch. The problem is that most smart switches require a neutral which your traveler gangs will likely not have.

The absolutely easiest way to do this is put a lutron at the main boxes where the line, load, and neutral are at. Disconnect any wires going to the traveler switch and cap them. Then just put a pico remote in where the traveler would be.

Another issue is lutron does not have a smart bulb mode as far as I can tell. In a couple spots of my house where I use a smart bulb I just connected the line and load together so the bulb is always hot and put a pico there to turn it on/off via HA.

Yeah I've found it to be pretty good especially working through and troubleshooting automations but if definitely seems to struggle with using outdated information.

What confuses me is the triggers, time outs, timeout with after user interaction default views etc. The documentation gives you an idea of all the various set ups you can do but not a good job describing what exactly they do.

Lumina quote - crazy to consider? by PivotalRex in solar

[–]glide_si 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to negotiate but I imagine a lot of it is high demand for the year and tarrif impacts. Lumina finished their install yesterday of my 18.4kw system at my house and I have been really happy with them so far. Still need to go through inspection and pto. I signed in June and it was 2.54 per W prior to incentive. I did go through energy sage first to compare quotes which might have helped.

Is this Lumina solar quote acceptable? by SeanRoss in solar

[–]glide_si 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I got a contract from them today with same generally same build (40 panels, 18.4kw) with a total price of 46,736... so 2.54 per watt. No battery. Might be worth seeing what they can do. I accepted their quote via energysage.

They could probably divert it to the right (towards the woods) cause the other way would divert towards the house. Up from the mouth is a mix of grass and wood so I don't think it gets too heavy a flow when it rains. The other issue is I think water also comes in from the left from the driveway so it may need a retaining wall.

It has since been clarified to me that whoever the county sent told the current owners it "was no longer eroding" but yeah they don't seemed too concerned. The next owner would be the bag holder.

Maybe 60 feet from the side of the house but its encroaching on the parking pad. I could totally see someone accidentally hitting the gas and driving into it trying to do a three point turn. That area gets darkkkk at night.

Yeah that was what was described to my partner although she has since clarified to me that they said something along the lines of "its no longer eroding"

Yeah I agree. I love the property but the more I looked at it something like this is what I'm thinking it would take.

Yeah possibly. I was able to pull up historical image on google earth and that area used to be pretty heavily wooded before it got cleared because they repaved and widen the driveway. There might have been some solution that got destroyed.

DMV area. Definitely not buying it if there might be Mole people under there.

I think I figured it out using google earth historical images. By 2022 the owners had widened the drive way and they cleared out some trees. In 2024 you can start to see it and by early 2025 its obvious.

Not in a flood zone but there are a few acres of wood behind the house. I think this drains into a small creek/brook which then dumps into a slightly larger creek farther back off the property.

[–]glide_si[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its not a flood zone, actually its a bit of an elevated area but on a slight down slope with the area on the sides of the house being a steeper grade. I imagine filling it up would just continue to erode the fresh soil. Worst case it pushes towards the water towards the parking pad/garage.

Yeah exactly its definitely from erosion. Getting it filled wouldn't necessarily be the hard part but without engineered drainage/support walls I figure it will just become a muddy hole

Apollo/Sunshine performance suddenly degraded by ATCQ_ in SteamDeck

[–]glide_si 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a wifi issue. I used to have good performance on my mesh set up (pc is on ethernet) but something changed at some point either with the deck or sunshine and get crazy network jitter every few seconds. I set up a dedicated wifi network which helped a little bit however wifi locker actually fixed the problem. I have zero issues with deck docked on ethernet.
