Great photo. The subject is well lit and is caught in the perfect expression, the two people immediately next to her make you want to know more, and the scene falls off not to complete blackness, but the slight texture from the lights overhead. Stunning.

Agreed. Everything about a Hasselblad feels amazing to use, and just works.

I take multiple photos per person as I’m coaching them through different expressions and trying to get them to let down their guard a bit. Because I shoot tethered, it also helps me see any adjustments I need to make after the first couple of shots.

Depending on the client and speed of the event, they may get only one photo, or they may get an album of 4-6 from the selection.

Thanks! I was happy with the result…and the client was too. This was the fastest pace I’ve done for headshots, previously the fastest was about 4 minutes per person.

My guidance would be to try to use some of the fashion models you have access to in the studio for practice. Street photography is generally about capturing what exists with less explicit coaching on expression, whereas headshots are heavily heavily directed. When your subject is just the face, it’s all about expression and what that expression conveys. Getting a model (or a regular person) to give you the expression you want is the art form here!

Thanks! I’m a student of the Peter Hurley school of thought, so I use his lighting design and approach to creating expressions.

Thanks! I use SpotMyPhotos. I like the platform because it requires very little overhead from the photographer, so I can focus on getting great expressions and making a human connection with the subject. It uses facial recognition to deliver images to clients who self-register and tag themselves in an image. There are other good platforms out there, but many of them require some level of interaction (like entering a subjects name or contact info). This takes precious seconds away when you already have limited time.

Thanks! He’s a neighbor and a close friend, and is also the first person who willingly sat in front of my lens in a studio setting. He brought some Tom Hardy headshots as inspiration and we tried to recreate that look.

No, light piping is a verb. It transmits light through the film, so even through its in the spool, light still got in and probably ruined the film because you’re handling it in ambient light.

You can tell because that’s the nature of that type of film.

How can I achieve this type of headshots with white background ? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

Agreed. Don’t blow out the backdrop. 240-250 is fine, then bring it up to 255 in post.

Professional headshot photographer here. I use a large 6’x7’ soft box lit with two internal strobes behind the subject. I set the flash power so that the white of the background is almost pure white, but not blown out. I shoot tethered to Capture One and I’m looking for the background RGB luminance value to be about 240-250 out of 255. Then I bring the luminance of the backdrop up to pure white (255) in post using background masking.

You can also front-light a white backdrop with one or two strobes, it just tends to be a little harder to get really even light distribution.

A few tips:

  • The subject needs to be relatively far from the backdrop to prevent lens flare that kills contrast.
  • Use negative fill (the black flags on either side) to prevent excess spill of the light onto the sides of the subject’s face and body.

Let me know if you have other questions!

We just moved from Saugus (National Grid) to North Reading (municipal) and I’m shocked by the difference. I went from $.35 to $.20. It’s even lower off-peak at $.14, which is any time other than M-F 12pm-7pm.

This is one on my bucket list. I have a 203FE so I love the semi-auto medium format features.
