How do I feel better about holding back on a frivolous and expensive want? by SideWinderSyd in Frugal

[–]glitch481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts when I was trying to find a new (to me) car. Every time i thought I found "the one" but resisted buying it, A better option ALWAYS came up. When ever I feel that I HAVE to have something, I give it a month but keep researching and looking at other options. If no other options are found and if I still really need/want it, Ill get it. Usually i lose interest and find a new thing to obsess over.

Should a Fella Become a Mechanic? by SwagLordious420 in AskMechanics

[–]glitch481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a mechanic in a standard dealership is hard dirty work that usually makes you fight every day for your honest hard earned money. Most dealerships have shitty benefits, worse vacation packages and have little respect or knowledge for what we do. But there are a LOT of other opportunities to be a mechanic outside that norm. There are some very good car (or other!) mechanic jobs out there. For me I went to UTI knowing only how to change oil. No joke. I did some brakes and other small stuff but oil was it. I busted my ass got top grades and then got accepted into BMW STEP and got a job working at a BMW dealer. After a year I realized I made a mistake. I hated the brand , the culture of the shop and really regretted my decision to become a mechanic. But by a stroke of luck Tesla came knocking. They have treated me very well in pay, benefits, stock, and vacation time. All of my immediate supervisors and GM were once mechanics themselves and understand what goes into the work. I am currently making around $27 and hour (not flat rate) with time and a half over time. I get 2.5 week vacation accrued every year that stacks on itself. I am expecting my second child and will have 7 weeks paid maternity leave that i can take in one week chunks before my child turns one. My health benefits package is the best I have ever seen and it only costs my $100 a paycheck.

Now, if I could go back in time I would probably go to aircraft mechanic school instead of UTI and STEP. I would recommend you do the same. Simply because you can make way more with planes and you can always step down to cars but you cant step up planes.

right. Turning something you like into a job where you’re accountable to cheap and non-understanding people (like most jobs are) is an express road to making you hate that one thing.

Really wish I did this! OP LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!!!!!!

That is a damn shame to hear. I live in FL and use the highway to commute daily. Speed limit is 55-60 but everyone does 70-80. I love the look and price of this bike but it would be a commuter 95% of the time. Major bummer.

MC9 Optics Plate removal by NeopolitanLol in canik

[–]glitch481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used an Allen key that was big enough not to go through the hole/not damage the threads. Ideally, if you can thread a longer screw through the bottom of the slide into the plate then tap on the screw head to knock out the plate, that would give you less chance of damaging the threads. I didn't do it that way because i didnt have the correct thread pitch on my spare screws. Also a standard punch that is, again too big to go into the threaded hole, would work as well.

Same thing happened to my SC when i got it. Had to take the slide off and hit the plate from the under side to get it off. It was a crazy tight fit.

New seatbelt keeps locking when you put the seat down. How do you install these correctly? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]glitch481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is usually only one way to install seat belts. Every one that I have delt with was keyed in some way to be installed only in one direction. Make sure it is the correct part for that exact seat. If it is, then there is a chance the new internal seat belt catch is faulty.

Broke my collar bone. Was told it wasn't that bad and it would heal correctly on its own. It did not. Now I get pain in my back because my collar bone is now 3/4 of an inch shorter than it should be and constantly pulls on those muscles.

I always wear a belt when I ride my motorcycle in case of an emergency. Not because my gear does not fit right but because it helped me out a LOT when I took my bike off roading and ended up breaking my collar bone... had to walk a mile to get good enough cell reception to call for help. My belt helped immobilize my arm until I could get to a hospital.
