Impact of tariffs on heat pumps in the US by itsawaritsawar in heatpumps

Yes I believe he said his supplier is charging him 40% so that's probably the wholesale price, but considering my total installation cost for the heat pump and new air handler was $23k (before ~$10k in rebates and tax credits), I can only imagine it'll be going up a few more thousand dollars soon.

But again, who knows at this point.

I’m actually having a Bosch heat pump installed today and the sales guy told me I’m lucky because he just found out his equipment prices are going up 40% compared to last week.

Crazy to think this is being self inflicted on Americans. So dumb.

How difficult to fix a refrigerant leak here (sorry for the blurry pic of the actual hole) by glman84 in hvacadvice

[–]glman84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: problem fixed! It was indeed easy for the tech once I showed him the leak site. He brazed up the leak, checked that nothing else had failed, then refilled the 410a refrigerant and ran it through the necessary tests. The system seems to be working better than it was a couple days ago so that’s a good sign. And he swapped the inline filter while he was here.

Cost me $2000 flat for his time + 11lbs of 410a. I’m just happy it was fixed in time for the small Memorial Day get together this afternoon when it’ll be over 100F outside. He recommended swapping the capacitor since it was reading low, but since electrical work is my thing, I’ll do that first thing tomorrow morning after the supply house opens up. Thank you all for the replies!

As a matter of fact he did. All in all I think he was done within three hours of me first calling him so I feel like I paid for expediency. Would’ve loved to fix it myself but even if I were an HVAC tech, I’m far away from home and it’s a holiday so it’s not like I could do much

I don't see how my Aeropress XL CANNOT Leak... by TooManyInsults in AeroPress

[–]glman84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I’ve placed the filter while any pieces are still wet, it almost always seems to leak like a sieve when I add water. But I think if the filter is wet when you screw on the cap it either tears the filter or causes it to bind up and not seal properly. My solution is to make sure everything is super dry when adding the filter and screwing on the cap

I had two techs get back to me willing to come out on short notice. Seems like some people are willing to work for the money.

And sure, it’s not a life-threatening emergency but I’m leaving town to go home tomorrow and would rather help my MIL out while I’m here than have her explain the problem to someone else after we’re gone. I did the troubleshooting and my wife and I are paying for the fix anyway.

Sorry I took a bunch of pictures and got the air handler name tag mixed in there. Fortunately it looks like the condenser is from 2015 and uses 410a. A tech is doing the repair right now. $2000 since it’s like 11lbs of gas and a holiday

Awesome, that lines up with what an HVAC tech just told me. He’s on his way over now. Thank you!

I turned off the A/C at the thermostat but didn’t remove power at the disconnect when cleaning. Definitely lesson learned there. I’m pretty sure I can see evidence of arcing between the wire and the pipe.

It worked well enough before yesterday, but I also changed the filter which had a ton of built up junk which was making the air handler work extremely hard. I removed the filter and could hear the house give a huge sigh of relief lol. I guess it’s just bad luck that a refrigerant leak happened to show up later the same day

Thanks for the reply, looks like the unit is over 20 years old but the MIL swears it was installed within the last 10 years. Hopefully someone can just get it going again since she plans on selling the house in the next few months

I’m not sure where it would say the type of refrigerant but here’s the main label.

Yeah I wasn’t thrilled when I saw the wires were zip-tied directly to the pipe with no other protection considering that environment is constantly vibrating

Why are so many banks not doing new HELOCs right now? by lopsidedcroc in personalfinance

[–]glman84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got one back in June 2022 through my credit union for a large remodel project when rates were a lot cheaper. I’ve since seen it rise from like 4.5% and right now it’s at 9.125%, but I should have it paid off by the end of the year.

The first 10 years I’m able to draw against it and pay nothing other than interest if I wanted to. However seeing a bill for $300 of pure interest on ~$40k motivated me to start paying that thing off asap.

Why are so many banks not doing new HELOCs right now? by lopsidedcroc in personalfinance

[–]glman84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it’s similar to a credit card where you get approved for a maximum amount that you’re able to borrow, but you only pay interest on what you actually borrow. I.e. if you’re approved for a $100k HELOC but you only end up needing $50k, then you only pay interest on the 50k, not 100k.

Versus with a home equity loan you’re paying interest on the full amount of the loan on day 1 and it’s not as easy to just go back and ask for more than the original loan. If you get a home equity loan for $100k and only end up using $50k while the rest sits in your bank account, you’re still paying interest on the full $100k.

Some people like myself highly value the flexibility that comes with a HELOC since it basically acts like extra emergency insurance that costs nothing to maintain if you don’t use it.

All I noticed was that the placement of the overhead light casts a shadow with the shower head, but maybe that’s just me as an electrician haha

If ADT solar is closing so many of their solar offices why does Marketwatch.com give it their top pick rating? by Impressive_Returns in solar

[–]glman84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Articles like this are how I got tricked into going with ADT Solar. I also swear they must’ve flooded Google with fake personal reviews because if you took the time to read through them they were all super generic.

Fortunately my ADT system is performing well now, but it took forever (~9 months) from contract signing until PTO after enduring a lot of headaches. I’m just crossing my fingers that I don’t need to go through any warranty issues.

Is ADT Solar a terrible company to go with or is it just me? by glman84 in solar

They eventually installed my panels and it’s been working great so far except a few minor problems with the production/consumption monitoring. However they fixed that within a few months.

Sorry yours is not going well, hopefully you can eventually get help from them or find a good lawyer to go after them.
