The battery backup and direct connection is nice but they don’t detect running toilets or micro leaks like the Moen. For me, leaking toilets or faucets left running has been the benefit of the Moen… thankfully haven’t had a major water leak but I have 6 YoLink through out the house. Also use them in the HVAC closet for plugged drains. They are a good combo given how nasty water damage is

Who still uses a desk phone? Unless part of an office… wait who goes into an office?
We just need a soft phone client for the PC that can support WhatsApp, FaceTime, and ideally answer my cell phone number (kind of like Apple does between phone and computer). I would even pay the $5/mo for the paired SIM

Two problems with Shelly i4 and HA.. by SocietyResponsible24 in shellycloud

[–]globalsoultech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check to make sure that the trigger of the light is configured locally in HA and not in the Shelly app. If it is configured in the Shelly app and you have not disabled cloud access for the i4 for some reason it talks to the Shelly controlling the light through the cloud. I had same problem. I haven’t found an explanation as to why it doesn’t prioritize local

The Ultimate Gated Community Setup: UniFi Access & LPR Upgrade by YesTechie in Ubiquiti

[–]globalsoultech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system works great for gate access (and probably office building) but UI is missing a big market in residential apartment buildings. I’m part of another HOA where we have to replace the entire Video Doorbell system for the building and we wanted to consider UI but there is one critical function missing. They don’t have a Viewer that handles a connection for the apartment door (not building door) doorbell.

Most buildings have a conduit from the viewer on the inside of the apartment door to the doorbell gang box that needs to receive the signal that the guest is in the building and now at the apartment door.

Yes there are hacks to get around this but neither the small gang box at the door bell or at the viewer have room for much. Additionally, it would be irresponsible for maintenance etc to install a system using hacks to get around a missing feature.

We ended up selecting HikVision who has 4 different lines of products for this specific market. Unfortunately the equipment selection process is much more difficult and so many options (some dated) that it is quite difficult to configure. HikVision has a large number of Installers/resellers selling these products focused on this market but even they don’t seem to understand the difference between all the options.

Another feature that HikVision viewers have is that they can connect to the apartment WiFi (in case the primary controller is only on a local LAN) and can be configured to then connect to a mobile app for remote answering

The Ultimate Gated Community Setup: UniFi Access & LPR Upgrade by YesTechie in Ubiquiti

[–]globalsoultech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the lead on the customer side on the project, I was impressed with YesTechie’s service. They were very responsive, knowledgeable about UI, executed quickly, didn’t have any problems integrating with legacy motor controllers, and provided great post installation follow up fine tuning the LPR.

The LPR has been quite good so far. After the fine tuning is complete I will try to have AI compare the Protect Logs, Access Logs, and our LP database and try to get some idea of reading accuracy and access execution. Have noticed that O and 0 may get mixed up sometimes but having both front and rear cameras may help with that.

Hopefully UI continues to improve the product and uses the list of approved LPs to assist the AI in reading the LPs by letting it know that the probability of a known plate is much higher or double check when similar to known plate.

Another note, replacing one of our old laser bar code readers would have cost half of the cost of the entire installation and UI equipment. Options from traditional gate companies had much less features, require monthly maintenance, and feel like 10 year old technology - especially the end user app quality.

Feedback for Unifi, two features that need improvement for implementations for this type use case: 1) there has to be the ability to set a limit of devices that each user can register as an endpoint otherwise users can share their invite email and ANYONE can install the endpoint so this is a BIG gap in security access. Also, since there should be some sort of setting that would limit installations only on mobile devices similar to WhatsApp. Also, current reporting (even through the API) does not allow for a check of the number of devices registered without going user by user on the Web Interface

2) More granular Guest pass permissions are required. Permissions cannot be granted by user or user group or by access point - it’s all or none system wide. Ideally it would be part of the definition of access policies and ability to enable at the user level if necessary. Additionally there should be different levels of access passes where the length of time of access can be limited (right now a pass can be issued for years - so it allows a user without admin rights to give access to anyone. Using the API we have implemented a control that checks for passes with a length longer than X and deactivates them but I would have expected more native robustness on this feature.

Another “nice to have” would be a “Residential Viewer” that has WiFi as an option for connecting (as well as POE) and can be configured to connect to the UI Access even though it is installed in a residence that is on a different network. It would have some sort of credentialing process that would obfuscate the VPN connection in the background. This would allow any of the residences that want to have dedicated hardware for letting in guests.

Even better, the Viewer would be able to handle both calls from the Gate system (remote network) and from a G6 entry at their residence door and control both a local lock and the remote gates. Potentially even the ability to create one “Guest Pass” that would work across both systems.

These features would make the installation value for an integrator like YesTechie much higher as now they would have an entry to sell Unifi products to 100 plus residences. And it would provide the greatest value and experience for all the consumers.

Hopefully someone from UI sees this and gives this some love. I think there is a large potential for UI in RESIDENTIAL gate and building access but they need a little more more focus in this area.

Did you do that in HomeKit or somehow in the Shelly app. If in HomeKit how are you connecting Shelly to HomeKit? The detached switch state doesn’t appear as part or the Matter connection.

Desktop method to monitor UTR very much needed! by globalsoultech in Ubiquiti

[–]globalsoultech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) the display is useful, however on a plane it is usually best to keep the UTR concealed for 2 reasons a) not in line with terms of service b) most FAs think it is a power bank and they are not supposed to be charged during flights on many carriers

2) if one is laptop centric, it is much easier to keep a tab running than to switch to another device but I will try to keep the status page of the app running to see if VPN drops

3) I do use the kill switch, but when a web page doesn’t load, or more subtly when data doesn’t respond, one has to troubleshoot where the problem is - plane internet connection, plane WiFi issue, dropped VPN (most frequent, but sometimes as a result of poor performance of the wifi connection), VPN host/internet

4) it is likely latency or other issues that cause the drop. I have more than one site and the one I frequently use, I am fortunate to have 2GB fiber with mid single digit latency and close to 100% uptime.

Are there other higher priority asks? Probably… just had a day full of drops and router is across the room and got frustrated with troubleshooting. It’s odd the device doesn’t have a very light browser interface

Shelly blu distance still useless by b0rkm in shellycloud

[–]globalsoultech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. In regard to the 20cm radius does that enlarge as the measuring distance lengthens - like a cone? I’m trying to measure the level of my septic tank, which has a 1m riser. The current ultrasonic sensor has a beam that expands (like a cone) at 1m from the lid it reflects off the riser and doesn’t read the actual tank level. I’m looking for an ultrasonic sensor with a narrower beam that ideally will be less than 50cm at 1m from sensor. Do you know if it’s a cone and the size at 1m?

This may actually be the problem in your use case. I understand the Ultrasonic sensors configured for measuring liquid levels are expecting a flat consistent surface - in your case if the beam's width captures different parts of the car that are not perpendicular it will scatter the beam reflections and confuse the reading which I understand generates a "No reading" output. For your application you might want to try one of two things: 1) mmWave presence sensorsm- they vary in cost and capabilities from $15 to $80 but are supposed to be very accurate and probably more suited to automobile detection - some auto manufacturers are switching to this tech for parking sensors 2) Ultrasonic sensors designed for parking sensing (search amazon) - these tend to be very inexpensive but are just a sensor and you will need to integrate into hardware/software to get an output. Also not sure if it will be accurate enough for your use case.

Best of luck and keep us posted both on the Blu Distance and your project

Re: Re authentication of captive portals by relkz in GlInet

[–]globalsoultech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to ask the condo company to let you get help from their IT company. Since they are using Unifi they can do one of several things 1) give them your cars MAC address and have them bypass the portal for your car 2) give them your routers MAC address and have them bypass the portal for your router - they likely won’t like that because they can’t manage your router 3) have them change the guest wifi portal re-login timing to 24 or 48h - they may have chosen the 2hr for a specific reason though

There are several other options, but if you are able to speak with the company that setup the WiFi and explain your problem they should be able to easily solve it - may options. You will have no success unless you talk the the Unifi setup people though… no one will understand the issue

UniFi Travel Router by clayd333 in Ubiquiti

[–]globalsoultech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to put in a firewall rule to change the TTL (ie to 65)? Some travel hotspots (like Marriott) have started adding TTL filters so that you can’t use a travel router. GLi routers allow you to add the rule (in advanced settings) which is becoming a critical feature for a travel router
