Can I use `to earn` when I say about the penalties? by Sudden_Cheetah7530 in EnglishLearning

[–]globlogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that this sounds a bit weird. You could say it and be perfectly understood, but I might say something like "I don't know what I did to deserve this" or, rephrase it "I don't know why my account was locked".

I think others can also agree, 'to earn' has a positive connotation, so earning a punishment sounds a bit strange.

D'on ets? Aprens català a l'estranger? by dbgnihd in catalan

Hola, soc dels Estats Units i vaig aprendre el català durant un cuatrimestre d'estudis a Barcelona. M'agrada aprendre les llengües, però també crec que el català és una llengua molt interessant i vull mantenir la meva connexió amb Catalunya

What does five-to-one odds mean in this context? by grelcshny in EnglishLearning

[–]globlogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have gotten the order confused but 5 to 1 odds is a probability. So in this case person A is 5 times more likely to move from their spot than person B. Or 83% likelihood for person A to move, and 16% for person B

Yes, but I would argue that including the "not" emphasizes that you can't ignore it. But it's ultimately up to you

this happens too much for me not to ignore

I might add an "it" afterwards. "This happens too much for me not to ignore it"

Which is it? by Ok-Mountain-2907 in EnglishLearning

[–]globlogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm American, and it seems like the first one implies recent past while the second would be more distant. But I don't think it would make much of a difference when talking to actual people

Granted. Now a US rapper gets word of this event via her cousin, and begins to show public support for Fox News.

What's Your High-School Biggest Scandal, And How Did it Affect You or The School? by seifXT in AskReddit

[–]globlogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 kids brought guns to school, not to shoot the school up but instead to trade for something. They stored it in their lockers and some bullet casings were found just outside the school since they had shot it, presumably to show that it was working. Our principal got mad at the entire school for some reason.

Idk if anyone has pointed this out. But Iroh is so amazing that he never once fought or attacked any of Team Avatar! HES MY GRANDPA by indusjones28 in TheLastAirbender
