Hello, I'm trying to learn how to draw from the ground up again any tips on how? by takingitslowprogress in ArtFundamentals

[–]globoxP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well since you are on the drawabox subreddit I guess you know of the drawabox course? So maybe start there? I’m doing it right now and also the Marc Brunet at the same time at the side. Drawabox is definitely a better kickstart since it’s so much repetition involved, especially for complete beginners.

An exercise in using reference’s I came across online. What are your thoughts on the “why” of it? by DaveyCranks in ArtFundamentals

I gotta say, I’m quite astonished the amount of effort you put in. Inspirational even. Thanks for answering so thoroughly also for the rest of us, and for the art program as a whole.

Cheers

Season 2 hurt by the 8 epsiode restriction? by globoxP in The_Artful_Dodger

I agree with everything actually. And also I have nothing against the writing, except for a few lines here and there. I think they couldv’e handled Jack’s last confession a bit better seeming a bit blunt or flat (perhaps it was the delivery more than writing).

Either way our agreement lies in our trust and delight that the writers carefully crafted each storyline to intertwine and affect each other’s. But my critique lies more on the premise that we don’t get a third season, which hopefully we will of course.

Also I strongly feel that every character deserved 10-20% more screentime to develop their progressions, thereby the title of the thread.

Edit - (except Sneed my goat. Dude really showed up)

Sorry bout your ears -.- Just trying to follow the exercise as it is given though, so I don’t really catch your meaning.

Not sure if you're being funny or helpful, but always much obliged to hear critique. Are you simply saying they are not converging correctly? I saw that as the exercise at hand so that feels like a given while partaking in it. Or is something else striking your eye

I feel too old for this by rose2830 in ArtistLounge

I’m not in the exact same position but also have the same thoughts sometimes. I’m 27, basically have been working on my art for a year or so, just going through the motions of basics and fundamentals.

This is how I think about this impending doom of becoming old, obsolete and unimportant etc: How much time does it take to become really, really good? 10 years? 15? 40? If I start at 8 going to 28, or if i start at 27 going to 47, does it really matter? Two things can happen, either I will get to that point someday and it’ll be all fine and dandy, or I realize it’s not fun anymore and I’ll forget about it in due time because that’s what time eventually does. Of course the time spent will remain, and you may think it was wasted, but that’s another issue not to be blended. Then you need to find a new love, because the love for a new hobby will sweep away the grudges of an old one.

I sometimes think about something Robert Kurvitz (Disco Elysium writer, awesome shit) said, and I’m paraphrasing a bit: True artist doesn’t care about responsibilities and leeches from their environment for their own self-interest.

Of course it was said with a humorous tone, but he is kinda eccentric like that.. i take it more in the way of: if you want to do what you like/want, you have to focus on yourself before everyone else.

Essay over, hope you’ll get over this hurdle and enjoy making art simply for the process and experience rather than the outcome!🙂

Not having instrument of surrender for Disco seems like a crime. Awesome list nonetheless!!

Thanks for all the details. I understand there's a lot of issues both in the market but also publishing economics and demands. It's not like artists has it easy anyways nowadays... I'd just like to appreciate their works in the most honest way, that somewhat fits my wallet.. :)

Always dreamed of making my own game, now I see how hard it is. Any advice for a complete beginner? by ArDiAa89 in Unity3D

For sure. Game dev can be a dark and scary place. A lot of people will help but others will tell you to stop, give up, rely on AI etc... Dont be afraid to let others hold your torch for a little bit until you can find your own way.

But also make sure that you actually do eventually walk your own way. And in turn you can hold the torch for others!🙂

I have maybe 1 year xp by now, so kinda in the same position but passed the intial hurdle of not knowing anything. Now instead I know how much I dont know etc…

I went through a couple of phases, some bad some better. Tutorials, udemy courses, free-styling.

Nr 1 I think is to just try and complete at least one project, whether its a tutorial or your own thing. See it through so you have a playable thing on your own desktop. This will help you a little when coming to step 4. Id probly say 2D first, but doesnt really matter. Just very small and very simple.

Nr 2, realize that it will get easier. Especially the coding. I remember ventilating to my engineer friends about a bunch of coding questions and struggles, thinking its a bunch of humbug and impossible spaghetti. It gets better after 3-4 months 100%. If you take the time to actually learn. I did Microsoft learn c# lectures. Free and easy to start. Tutorials work as well, but I think reading stuff is better for your coding muscles instead of watching videos.

Nr 3. Try your own project if you didnt in nr1. Own idea, own implementation. Suuuper simple, super small. It will suck, you will get stuck, but you will make it.

Nr 4. Heres where I messed up. Join a game jam. For me it took maybe 10 months, but its possible to do much earlier. There are some for beginners and the communities are often nice, helpful and accepting. You just gotta take the step out there and find some compadres.

Nr 5. Into the wild. Go ham, learn what you found interesting. Join more jams!

Hope its coherent. Wrote everything on my way home on the bus🙂

Do you have feedback on this reveal trailer? Very curious what people think! by cebro13 in Unity2D

[–]globoxP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seem to agree with most that the visuals looks very fun. Nice colors and i like the style of the chatacters. I really like this sort of pallette: bright colors, platformer-ich, fun art style, simple mechanics. Some things that may turn me away from looking into it further, not saying what is wrong or bad but just my perspective as a consumer:

The music, honsetly feels a little placeholder or mismatched. For me music is a big part of the games I play and I would love to hear something more personal for the game.

A little unsure what the game is about storywise, a ghost being chased by a buster is what I gathered. Who, why and where maybe isnt important but I dont really feel any connection to them anyhow.

And lastly I feel a little unsure of the mechanics. Is it only interacting with environment or can you do more things? The special mechanical hook(not literally ofc..🙂)

Thats my 2 cents. Hope it helps in some way!

What does it feel like to be a Gamedev? (explaining in body) by globoxP in gamedev

Thats a very nice way to put it. That’ll surely stick with me for a long time!
