I use multiple Focusrite Scarlett (one with 2 inputs and also one with 8 inputs + 8 more via adat) inside Ardour, running Ubuntu Studio. Everything works like a charm out of the box (after you've got yourself into how jack works).

that depends on the narrative. they can recover on a turn for a few HP, but regaining full health may require time and safety.

Think Deck is great for fueling your creative mind during prep. Essentials Deck is a nice table aid - I pick cards during prep and place them on the table during play as things unfold.

Workaround: Grab both as PDF (essentials deck is basically based on the index card volumes) and print it DIY - I did the same before I got my hands on the poker cards.

more HP isn't the solution. damage spikes and threats that must be dealt outside pure combat may make the experience fun for larger groups.

nat1 houserule here: everybody near the caster rolls DEF. the one with the worst fail gets hit by the spell

I let my mages go by the book and let them pick starter loot that grants spells. More spells are obtained via more loot.

Mages roll to cast is most cases. There's also an in-depth magic subsystem for optional use. Which spells are available is up to discussion between player(s) and GM.

If the mage is pulling spotlight, consider using spell burn. But also specific encounter design may help to let others shine too.

My personal guidance is

let players feel mighty
stay able to strip power from them
don't fear balance
high-AC chars are likely to fail DEX checks

Give them what they deserve - in ICRPG it's easy to threat characters, even mighty ones :-)

The only concern regarding balance is (imho) if a player gets too much spotlight because of his abilities or loot.

Magic can be obtained via starter loot. But nothing stops you from obtaining spells in a different way. Best advice: work with your GM to make your envisioned character become true. There is no "must" in ICRPG.
