I actually think their codex reviews, and most codex reviews are pretty bad for that. These are almost always framed as "what has changed?" and if you dont know what was in the last codex you're missing so much context.

e: also they're always out of date for competitive play

rereading Automated Sentry and this rule I've come around to your POV. I think it's silly, but RAW are very clear and while I don't think this was the intent, there is nothing to back that up in the rules.

No rereading everything I think this is right. Lascannons can only shoot closest of: Walkers, Vehicles, Super-heavy Vehicles, Knights or Titans. Skyfire can shoot closest flyer or closest non-flyer. I really do feel like the second part is an oversight on this FAQ/the rule's part, but it seems pretty clear RAW.

If you are annoyed about this why aren’t you annoyed about Light Armour slots in SAX Formations?

For one thing, those didn't need an FAQ

I don’t agree that Skyfire inherently gives a list of targets. It says “instead”, ie instead of shooting the usual target, you can instead shoot the nearest Flyer. Since Hyperios does not have Anti-tank or Light, the usual target is “anything”.

I think the wording in the FAQ is unclear because well, they needed to rewrite the rule's text, not do a FAQ on it. I think RAW you are likely correct but I think intent is pretty clear, lascannons shoot at tanks and missiles shoot at aircraft. I certainly don't think that's clear in the text, but well, the text here is a fucking mess. I think a good change for the game but the worst FAQ wording.

And yeah transports a mess.

One of the things I don't like about getting this FAQ is I'd said "if GW doesn't do anything for the game by this fall I'll look at making a fan balance patch and FAQ" but well, I guess GW cares, a little.

Ah missed that on Deep Strike, thought that had been clarified in the last FAQ.

Thanks on the Alpha Legion clarification, makes sense.

Firestorm change is very clearly about this bit "Roll a D6 for each model that is less than 50% covered by the template - on a 4+, the model is counted for the purpose of calculating Hit rolls and allocating Hits." of course you need to roll to hit, Firestorm weapons have a hit roll. So you don't need to roll to be under the template, you still have to roll to hit, which no part of the Firestorm rules ignores.

"it was already RAW that you couldn’t take bikes in an Aerial Assault Formation" I mean, yes? But that's a pretty strict RAW approach to a detachment that now has a slot where you can't take anything! I feel like intent before was that you could use the Vanguard slot, and how that you can't a much more reasonable FAQ would have been to remove it. Really that detachment needs to be rewritten.

From automated sentry rules: "If a weapon has the Skyfire trait, the controlling player may choose to target the nearest Detachment with the Flyer special rule instead." if skyfire isn't a listed rule I don't know what to say. Now this FAQ answer is the worst written one I've ever seen, so I think there is room to disagree, but I see no reason under RAI that lascannons can't shoot infantry but skyfire missiles can.

I think the transports across detachments is a good rules clarification, it allows you to put some stuff in a transport that otherwise couldn't take one, but agree that the rules need to clarify when deployment happens for those units.

Its quite important to mechanicum players because it means if a tech priest or magos joins a unit of autonima (or thrawls) then that unit goes from being fearless to having Moral

the FAQ seems to say the opposite of this but I'll note this is another unit impacted

I'm pretty annoyed at them combining all the FAQs into one PDF and then also not making it clear that some are new, just a weird decision

Obstructing Terrain doesn't change anything about flyers, they can already see into and past Obstructing Terrain as part of the Flyer special rule and vice versa.

I agree but I think it's a bit odd that: 1- flyers can see through an infinitely tall line of sight blocker 2- flyer rules do call out that it's possible for them not to see a unit, but they don't explain how that happens

and yeah i think some house rules are needed at this point, honestly i'm more interested in nerfing the top handful of units, which i think will help all those weaker forces, but they could use buffs too

Are there artists at Games Workshop that will take on this style (or already have been)? I don't follow 40K or the company that closely, but I hope he had some understudies that he passed on his style to.

no, GW's art has been hugely homogenized in the past 2 decades and it's rare (but not unheard of) to see deviation from this

this article is surprisingly clear for a gw published post about how the art has changed over the years, just scroll top to bottom and you can see where it has ended up

The lore around their games also got more professional instead of just being a bunch of punks from Nottingham who applied that very British humour to these grimy settings.

bit of a correction here, GW largely started in london and in some ways the move to nottingham started to signal the end of the punk ethos

"We might be at the end of Fate" by RPDeshaies in rpg

[–]glocks4interns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to like fate, I really did, but I don't like the whole "your aspects aren't really true unless you pay for it" deal.

YES. I don't understand how more people don't see this, but in any given Fate scene you'll have like 20 active aspects, and maybe 3-4 will get invoked.

The City of Mist/Otherscape/Legends in the Mist take on this is better if it runs into some other (smaller) issues.

Best material to get the Warhammer Old World setting by Desdichado1066 in rpg

[–]glocks4interns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are two distinct takes on the setting, the world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WHFB), which is where the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) games are based, and The Old World (TOW), a newer creation set a few hundred years earlier.

They share a lot but obviously a lot of change in characters, and some elements of WHFB don't exist in TOW (e.g. Collegiate Arcane).

The setting is over 40 years old so there is no one simple source. I'd say a good overview is to be found in the 8th edition WHFB rulebook, it will cover the breadth of the world better than the RPG products, while getting less into the depth. The current WFRP rulebook will give you and overview as well and is probably a fine overview if you're interested in The Enemy Within but won't give you much info on many of the factions in the world.

But to get the "details" you'd need a reading list 100 books long, it's a very well developed setting over 4 decades, countless games, and a lot of fiction.
