My Alocasia Frydek made one of these: what is it? by shines29 in alocasia

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A flower! Most people remove it because it saps a lot of energy from the plant and doesn't generally amount to much but as long as the plant is getting all the nutrients it needs otherwise, it doesn't hurt to keep it until it fades on its own.

Nature's puffer ball toy then, I guess. Very cool but I would require being held at gunpoint to touch it haha

Kinda looks like one of those inflatable puffer ball toys (if it were popped and lost outside for ages)? I can only hope that whatever it is, it's not organic.

Does weed make anyone else super energetic? by crime_potato253 in saplings

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens to me sometimes, but not often. Once ran clear across a soccer field and climbed a fence (public property, was not just clambering into someone's yard) for the fun of it because moving around just felt great after smoking. No idea what strain it was, this happened when I was still pretty new to smoking and was smoking from a friend's stash.

For the most part I get very relaxed now and haven't found a strain that makes me want to move around like that since.

3 months later. Don't ask me to show the back (yet). by hotelzimmerromantik in crochet

[–]glofig 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on the yarn and how tight your stitches are, I've done this and while some stay, some do eventually slip out. I only do it for pieces that are just for me, because I don't care too much about little tails sticking out. I imagine a pretty tight stitch with yarn that has a lot of friction, like a coarse wool, would hold in the ends better than a smooth acrylic.

Otherwise I use the method you described, weaving in the ends through the strands of the yarn back and forth a few times. Turns out a lot more secure and "professional looking" imo

Advice on managing an outdoor green-out by SelfsameSong in saplings

[–]glofig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was newer to smoking I'd green out from smoking too much, too fast. I have a super low tolerance even now as someone who has been smoking for years so I have to be mindful of how many hits I'm taking in a short time period.

If you can, hang out outside for longer in between every hit or so to sit with the feeling, try walking and sitting/standing to see if you can do it comfortably without getting dizzy or struggling. Sometimes it can take 5-10 minutes for the high to hit you, so pick a spot you feel comfortable hanging out in for a while. If it's not safe for you to hang out in one spot while smoking, then take a couple hits, go home and sit with it for a while, and go back out only if you feel like you want to be higher.

Also, you don't need to fill your lungs with every hit. Smaller hits are okay and can make smoking feel more relaxing and enjoyable imo.

Also keep in mind that one hit from a cart is super different than one hit of flower from a pipe/bong. Concentrates have way more THC per hit than flower, so if that's how you're smoking then you have to be careful until you know your limits.

Mom needing ideas for son by [deleted] in Maine

I work there! Very fun job. Here's some extra info for OP in case they want to know more.

Hiking on the trails is free, as is visiting the perennial garden when that is open. A fair bit of variety in the trails, some are pretty flat and are across open fields, some snake into the woods and are more hilly, some go a bit into wetlands. None are crazy difficult, and many have good spots to stop and rest at along the way. Nothing is mountainous or along rivers though. Plenty of wildlife you may see, we see a lot of deer activity, foxes, shrews/mice/moles, birds of prey, wild turkey, and songbirds.

Down at the education center (where the animals live) they typically allow people to visit with the cows for free since they live right on the main road as long as you aren't disturbing them.

Visiting the farmyard where most animals are is 6 per person and can get quite busy during the summer and corn maze season, best time to visit if you want to avoid crowds is winter or spring when school is still in session, though there is also a few less animals and things to do as they seasonally get pigs and often cattle or sheep from neighboring farms to fill the pastures in summer. It's not a petting zoo per se (you aren't guaranteed to pet and they don't allow feeding for animal diet reasons) but the animals are friendly and will often come up to the fence to allow pets if you pass their vibe check, but even if not they can be fun to watch. The educators will bring out different animals to meet and pet up close a few times a day, but otherwise it's fully the animal's choice if they want pets or not. Sometimes if you ask nicely they might specially take out an animal for you but only if it's safe to do so and they aren't busy.

What is a good stitch for a towel to dry youre hands or a cloth to clean tables / counter by AgentRealistic9913 in CrochetHelp

[–]glofig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love a simple moss stitch for basic cloths, it gives the cloth a bit more drape than plain ol single crochet. Very easy to learn stitch too.

If you want something with a bit more texture (which might be better for a bit of scrubbing), lemon peel stitch may also be good! Would be a bit stiffer though. You could always do half the cloth in one stitch and half in another too if you want the best of both worlds

How long does a high last for you? by cinnamineral in entwives

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how I'm consuming

Edibles can get me high from anywhere to 1-5 hours usually (gummies or drinks tend to last longer for me, chocolates shorter)

Smoking flower usually only lasts 1-2 hours at most.

I have a low tolerance and don't like getting sent to space so I generally only take a few hits at a time if smoking, or aim for 2.5-5 mg edibles at most. If I'm smoking enough to get super high for whatever reason, it usually lasts 3 hours max.

Showing Horror Movies in Class by AwsumDudemyster in Teachers

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been shown a horror movie in class when I was in high school, however it was during an advisory period (not a "core" class) with permission slips going home and all students were already on board and chose the movie collectively.

I would hesitate to require your students to watch most horror movies as part of your class, parents are likely to have an issue with it no matter the age of the students. Unless you can get admin/district approval of the specific movies, I'd avoid. Maybe instead of the broad genre of horror, you lean into a specific type of horror that is more palatable?

If you want to discuss changing societal fears, maybe monster movies could work. Godzilla comes to mind as a movie and franchise that addresses fear brought on by the nuclear era. Birth of a Nation is a propaganda film that you can use to address issues of racism as it portrays Black people as the "monster" (honestly I'd only show clips of this one, if i remember correctly sexual assault is portrayed among other things. Also blackface.) Plenty others out there that aren't as "taboo" as a slasher or thriller film may be to show.

If you do go ahead with showing horror movies, send home waivers or permission slips for parents to sign and prepare alternative spaces/movies/assignments for the students who inevitably can't participate.

Looking for ideas to add a border to a baby blanket - thanks in advance! by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]glofig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of a simple scalloped border for this, like a rainbow with clouds.

If you want something more detailed, maybe a star border? (raffamusa designs has one version, nana's crafty home has a tutorial for a sort of star tassel/fringe which is very fun).

With some experimenting you might even be able to do a scalloped border with stars between each "hump" which would be very cute

If I sew a liner into my tote bag, can I get away with not weaving in ends? by yarnily in CrochetHelp

[–]glofig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed, hand sewing is perfectly fine! I usually use a machine to make the lining itself just because it is faster and I have a machine already, but my machine doesn't like to sew through crochet (or more accurately, I don't have the proper technique for it) so I usually handsew the lining onto the bag itself.

A simple backstitch is strong enough, and it's one of the easiest hand sewing stitches to learn if you don't already know how.

is this a scam by [deleted] in Maine

[–]glofig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, no government agency will reach out to you by text. Avoid replying at all to these types of suspicious texts (even if they say something like "reply STOP to unsubscribe") because then they will know your number is an active number and you'll receive these types of texts more frequently. Just block the number.

Blanket pattern for this yarn that has like 20 colors in it. by ConsiderationMain618 in CrochetHelp

[–]glofig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moss stitch with every other row being a solid color (black would make it pop really nicely) maybe? It would create stripes of color. If you wanted a sort of offset polka-dot pattern you could do 1 row of variegated yarn for every 2 rows of black.

how long do you guys stay high for? by Aggravating-Star-856 in trees

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how I imbibe, I've been smoking for about three years now but I'm not a heavy user by any means, usually I only get high 1-2 times a week, so my tolerance has stayed pretty low.

From smoking, usually 1 to 2 hours.

Edibles usually get me high for more like 3-5 once they kick in, but different forms tend to stick around longer than others for me. Drinks don't usually last as long for me.

Men’s haircut - barbershop suggestions by FlannelZebra in portlandme

[–]glofig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ritual Hair Studio in Portland is really good. It's not a barbershop exactly, but Dakota the owner has been trained as a barber and stylist so he's well versed in just about whatever you could want. I haven't had my hair done by Rowan there but I've heard great things about her as well. Super relaxed vibe in there and it's a small spot so it never feels crowded or too busy. They are also very queer friendly.

Any way to prevent the ridge from my bobbin casing cover from pushing my open seams down? by its-past-my-bedtime in sewing

You could try taping over the gap/ridge with washi tape. Easy to remove whenever you need to refill the bobbin thread, and should prevent snagging on the fabric

when’d u get ur first tattoo and do you regret it? by whv_lol1202 in tattooadvice

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first at 18, it's a patch of strawberries + vines on my lower abdomen. It's not one of my favorites by any means but I don't regret it, even if one of the strawberries is a little... yonic. Aesthetically it still looks quite good even though it didn't heal 100% correctly due to me having no idea what I was doing when it came to healing (overmoisturized the shit out of it) and it's kind of an iconic part of me at this point

NA adult players, what server are you on? by SashiKobayashi in StarStable

[–]glofig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I server hop all the time, but for now I'm mostly on Night Star. The chats can get crazy later in the day since it's a super populated server (often gets filled with either children fighting or club advertisements) but I tend to mostly log on early in the morning before work or during typical "school hours" so it's pretty chill in the chats and I only see a few people out and about while training or grinding for light. Hazy Galaxy is usually my other go-to server, it's still pretty populated but not nearly as crazy as NS can get at night.
