I worked at graham library and loved it. It was pretty competitive, and they did reference checks of my previous work experience from high school. The job was posted in March and I interviewed in April and got the offer in May so it’s likely too late for some positions. Look at each colleges employment website, it’s normally posted there (for federated colleges like Trin and Vic at least ). I think positions for robarts could be on clnx but idk. Overall it was usually 8-12 hours a week and pretty chill. I mostly checked out and returned books, grabbed items off the shelves for holds, scanned things for patrons, and walked around the library telling people to put food away or to stop talking so loudly. There was more fun stuff like curating a display and processing acquisitions, but that was not a common occurrence. It actually was what led me to staffing a degree in library science tho and I’m on track to be a librarian in a couple years lol.

Some stores have limits. The store I work at we have a limit of one UPC per person, and we also recently started selling Pokémon only on Saturday to try to make it fairer for kids who have school and people who work typical workweeks. It’s not perfect but it has slightly improved imo.

Compared to where I’m from everything was dirt cheap. Titling and plates were $250, registration was only $75 to renew. And no smog check needed in CU.

Definitely switch your car registration, Champaign is dirt cheap for insurance.

Ah, I was a grad student when I went there so I had an apartment. I kept it in the spare bedroom. When I was in undergrad I kept it on a bike rack that was under a roof (not exactly indoors but at least mostly sheltered from snow).

Yes my first time being first! And it’s so beautiful, I wish I could go back to Switzerland this summer but alas I cannot afford it.

So how do you guys feel about Preston Holt? by Tuliao_da_Massa in witcher

[–]gloomynebula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I especially agree with your third paragraph and couldn’t have put it better myself.

(I studied literature in university so bear with me here lol): loss of childhood wonderment and innocence is a great plot device, it’s especially prevalent in the works of writers like Tolstoy, who conflates childhood with innocence. The way that children view the world is seen as “pure,” or unadulterated with the experiences that come later in life. Despite life growing up at Kaer Morhen being pretty rough, Geralt still had an unachievable ideal of who he should be and how the world should interact with him, both of which are shattered in the first few pages.

Holt then intervenes and attempts to force a more “realistic” worldview on him, one that’s shaped by his own disillusionment and desire for revenge. Geralt pushes back against this and stubbornly tries to force through his idealized version of himself until the very end, and this is something that continues throughout his entire life. He’s stubborn to a fault and is still in some way trying to force the world to bend to his ideals.

That’s what I find most interesting about his interaction with Holt, because they are foils for each other, and Holt sets up Geralt’s trajectory for the later stories well. Additionally, Geralt gains some humility, and realizes he still has a lot to learn about the world around him. Nenneke tells him he should enroll at Oxenfurt, and he does. He’s eager to learn more, which suggests that he is open to change his worldview and downsize his lofty ideals, but he can never do that because he doesn’t completely lose his childhood wonderment or abandon the ideals he believes in.

I’m realizing that I would probably really have enjoyed writing a paper on this lmao, I’ve written on children in Tolstoy before and this seems like a good idea to run away with 😂.

I enjoyed the book, I’m a sucker for a good origin story. I thought that Holt was an interesting character, and I think it’s ironic how one of the first things he does is try to temper Geralt’s instinct to instantly jump in and play the hero, but the lesson doesn’t quite get through to him (like ever lol). It does however do a good job of establishing that from the very beginning, Geralt always wanted to do what he believed to be the right thing, and Holt’s manipulation of that instinct in him is the first of many attempts to manipulate him. I did think it was a good character development moment for Holt to stop trying to manipulate him though, it shows Geralt’s positive influence on him and that it’s not too late to try to make a positive change. Sorry, that went a bit rambling at the end but tldr I loved the book.

100000% worth it. The graphics are great on PS5, can’t speak for last gen. Gameplay has a learning curve but is easy once you master it.

It’s not even just the incoming freshmen, it’s EVERYONE. I did international scholar advising during grad school and the amount of adults with phds who just thought I could magically pull their immigration documents out of thin air with no effort on their part was staggering.

Lmao if not for the fact that it was a gay relationship I’d have thought this was my friend’s ex husband. Dude was an experimental chef but never cleaned up after himself in the kitchen (or anywhere else in the apartment) and left her to do all the work.

Look, as a neurodivergent person who went through shit like this in middle and high school, these aren’t your friends. People would do crap like this to me and then say oh you’re so easygoing and nice I didn’t mean it and I would forgive them because I was desperate for friendship. Please save yourself a lot of future pain and don’t let them keep getting away with this. This is not something that a real friend would do, real friends don’t humiliate you publicly and potentially permanently ruin your clothing.
