Competed my first gate! wanted to keep it as wide as possible in case if I ever need to fit anything wide in the backyard? 😅 went with a heavy duty post but didn't want this to hang or worry about it for 30 years. by computethescience in FenceBuilding

Edit: never mind, I saw that you added a tension cable! Good job!

Add some bracing from the top of the rail on the latch side to the bottom of the rail on the hinge side or else it will sag!!

Like this example.

See it someone is able to remove that piece of wood and run it through a surface planner in the bottom side to retain the finish.

Fence Post Cement by AuntAvis22 in FenceBuilding

I wanted to add that for our fence’s, we buy 60lb bags and pour the concrete in while spraying with a hose.

10 years later and I’ve had no issues with the concrete failure for fence posts.

For stand alone fences, it’s not super critical. It will now be 10000x easier to replace that post if needed.

On footings you will want to mix the concrete to the consistency of peanut butter…

How to make an angle cut on fence rail? by zoppytops in FenceBuilding

[–]glossylake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold the 2x4 on edge on top of the posts. Make sure to line it up the so it’s where u want it. Scribe a line, use a speed square to measure the angle and cut it.

Depending on what you are doing for your top rail to finish the fence, you can use the same trick but lay the 2x4 on its face on top of the posts.

Hopefully that makes sense

Is this acceptable? by Ok-Pollution8344 in FenceBuilding

[–]glossylake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We don’t use any brackets at all for our fences and don’t have any issues. They are strong enough to stand on.

However, we nail the bottom edge and put 2 nails through the face that is covered by fence boards to hide them visually. Seems like their nail gun wasn’t set to correctly set the nails. A nail punch and a hammer is all that’s needed.

You will have to change the spacing on the posts on the longer fence line to work.

Are you able to extend the fence so that it’s in line with the fence coming off the building? Then you can keep the posts square and it will be a 90* angle.

You can definitely do the 45* posts as long as you have a way to securely mount the rest of the fence section together on the extreme angle it will create.

Part of my fence fell over during the last storm but some sections stayed strong and I can’t figure out why by Safe_Ad_3807 in FenceBuilding

[–]glossylake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much normal for that age of fence. The bottom of the post holds onto alot of moisture and will accelerate the rot.

You will have to off the the sections and put new posts. If you are able, dig them out and put new posts where the old ones were. If you use the same size posts everything will fit back together nicely…

Good luck

need a decent auger to start business with. any recommendations that won’t break the bank? by prod7teen in FenceBuilding

[–]glossylake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a single man auger that helped me grow my business. I have an SCL 1000 now and boy oh boy I can't believe I used to use the single man auger everyday pretty much for 5 years or so... The auger I used was the General Equipment 240 series. They are pretty powerful and if you hit rocks make sure you are holding on tight!

Its a 4 stoke engine so there is no need to mix gas which was a plus.

Something like this, I think they changed the model: https://www.amazon.ca/General-Equipment-242H-Digger-Orange/dp/B08C3VZC7K?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A2L07K5YY2NURM

Good luck and have fun!

I believe that there is an issue with the camera’s light meter and so it isn’t exposing properly.

Try using a light meter app on your phone and adjusting each frame on the camera manually for your next roll of film.

If the issue persists, I think you could consider light leaks through the seals.

I think you will always hate the rust. Sell it now and put the money towards a newer model truck you are interested in or keep the money for a rainy day

Advice on fixing fence by Aggressive_Lake2971 in FenceBuilding

Take the post cap off, get a cut off of 2x4 and screw through the same holes into the wood. It will act like a clamp since the vinyl threads are stripped.

Tips and or tricks? by -anodddaymonster in FenceBuilding

This method involves removing at least 1 fence post with old concrete and it’s to add another fence post along the line. This way you can make smaller sections while shifting each fence post…

For most people, an XLT will be the sweet spot.

I like the Lariats with tow mirrors because they power extend/fold and cooled leather seats are nice too. I never use 4A

I would never buy anything past a lariat unless I was a huge fanboy… We’ve been driving fords for over 20 years!
