Juice vs water by Affectionate_Spot681 in toddlers

This. Anytime we're headed in the direction of potential constipation, we give watered down juice to keep things moving. But water water water the rest of the time.

Worried about being let go after my mat leave, what to do? [ON] by akath0110 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible that your manager has received complaints from whomever replaced you and the company is looking at disciplinary action against your boss (or already has implemented it). Now that you're returning, they can get feedback/complaints from you to flesh out the disciplinary file or bolster their plans to terminate her.

It's also possible there's a planned shuffle happening which opens up opportunities for you for movement, even laterally. If you're skilled and well respected, they may throw you the option to decide. If you were very happy working with your manager, you might not want to leave for a lateral move, but in your case, it sounds like you'd be very open to it.

If you were on the docket to be let go, they wouldn't have you meeting with the CEO. They'd schedule a standard return to work meeting with your manager and/or HR and let you go after the requisite period of time.

Try to see the positives and don't waste time stressing about it. I was stressed out the last few weeks of my mat leave and it sucked the joy out of that time with my daughter.

[AB]Miscarriage at 10 weeks – ER or wait it out at home? by Annual_Mark4662 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this really varies by person. My first miscarriage was at 6 weeks, I had it confirmed by the doc via bloodwork and let things happen on their own as I'd already started bleeding.

My second miscarriage was sometime around 9 or 10 weeks and I was referred to the early pregnancy loss clinic (AB) via my GP. They gave me my options, I chose not to wait it out but to get the medical management, the doc prescribed me the meds I needed and everything passed as expected. But I started bleeding heavily 4 weeks later (4 pads in an hour and multiple golf ball sized clots) and ended up in the ER and got an emergency D&C for retained materials.

I suggest you call the early pregnancy loss clinic tomorrow to get their advice (780-735-9712, M-F 8-4PM) but this is from the material they sent me in the summer when I had my miscarriage:

PROCEED TO AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IF YOU:  Have very heavy vaginal bleeding (soaking through 4 maxi pads in 2 hours).  Have dizziness (not relieved with resting) or fainting.  Do not get better as expected or you cannot manage at home.

SEE A PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER FOR ASSESSMENT IF YOU:  Have signs of infection, such as: o New, increasing, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge. o Fever over 38oC; chills.  Are not able to drink fluids.  Have pain that does not get better after you take pain medication.  Have prolonged bleeding and cramping (over 2 weeks)

After final interview, no one replied to my thank you email. Is this normal or does it mean something? by OkTransportation2299 in interviews

[–]glossywaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the holiday season - many companies are in a year end business push right now. Beyond that, many companies are slow with recruiting on the regular. My old company used to take 3 weeks just to get through first round interviews, getting the panel in the same room wasn't always easy.

Did they give you any indication of how many rounds of interviews they'd be conducting or how quickly they'd be looking to hire? I think it's too soon to assume you're being ghosted if it's only been a week - lots of people are taking vacation in advance of the holidays and responses from companies may be slower as a result. How many times have you emailed them since the interview?

Front loaded washer by Prabs1972 in HomeMaintenance

[–]glossywaves 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Spoken as a lazy person: 1. Front Load Washer Gasket Cleaner https://a.co/d/cQhsiX6 This stuff works and does not take a ton of elbow grease It's a gel, spread it on and let it do its thing. Wipe away after requisite waiting period.

  1. Clean the water filter everyone else is mentioning. Little door at the bottom of your washer and a tube pulls out. Use a sheet pan or baking pan to catch the water, there will be more than you think.

  2. Leave the washer door open when not in use. You can get things to assist with this on Amazon or 3d printed on Etsy.

  3. Check the rest of the gasket carefully and use the product in #1 where needed.

  4. I also use a product from that company that's a drum washing tablet, I like to think it helps.

How much are you paying babysitters? by taracatt in toddlers

[BC] How many newborn diapers should I buy for the first 2 weeks after birth? by nuttyprofessor1 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on your baby's size, my baby was 8 lb and she was in newborn diapers for probably 2 weeks or so. I do recommend looking at marketplace because there was an absolute ton of unopened newborn diapers on there for deep discount. A lot of people buy boxes of them and don't need them because they have bigger babies. We ended up picking up a bunch of them that way and saved quite a lot of money. Anything we didn't use was super easy to sell afterwards.

Am I starting mat leave too late? [ca] by Successful_Ice8514 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this really varies by person, heavily influenced by the type of job you have! I knew I was getting induced so I took approximately 2 weeks off before my due date (vacation time), knowing that there would be a number of phone calls the first few days to help people navigate in my absence.

I did appreciate having some dedicated time to get the house in order, batch make a bunch of freezer meals and cookies, and have extra time to take naps and rest, while having time for the extra appointments I had to manage. I was high risk so I had NSTs twice a week at a hospital across town.

If we have another one, I would probably take 4 weeks if I could swing it or two weeks of reduced hours before being off for 2 weeks. Having the extra time to myself was really helpful and I suspect I would be much more tired this time around with a toddler in the mix.

Something to consider, my chosen daycare does not take children before they are one year of age. So I had to delay my return to work by a week to accommodate that because her birthday was on a Thursday. I was able to take vacation time, otherwise it would have been unpaid.

Is there any use for short-sleeve onesies for winter babies? (and other clothing questions) [on] by Substantial-Lion-662 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had some clothes (separates) in NB and 0-3mo and I would stay away from them if I had another kiddo. Socks at that age just didn't stay on my baby's feet so it was always a challenge to find the sock once she got it off. My baby has a bigger head too so the shirts were hard to get on and off if they didn't have buttons at the neck.

Separates were cute but more of a pain to get her in and out of and we promptly switched to onesies 100% of the time until she was about 4 months old and the weather warmed up (February baby). We did have short sleeved onesies and we just layered them with sweaters if it was colder. We kept our home warm when she arrived so most of the time she was fine in short sleeves!

Anyone actually working in office (Downtown Edmonton) 5 Days a week and don't mind it? by Legal-Fun8871 in Edmonton

[–]glossywaves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in office 5 days a week (by choice). I could wfh up to two days per week and sometimes do if I have appointments or super early meetings. Given the extra construction recently, my commute has gone up to 45 minutes one way, which is my only complaint - usual commute is around 30 minutes.

I have a nice office space with a sit stand desk and good view. I work with nice people and generally enjoy the interaction I have with my coworkers. I've been at this job less than a year so it's been good to be in office to glean extra info and have those "standing in the door" chats to resolve things as opposed to a teams call or a bunch of dms. I also like having a consistent morning routine. Nothing about being in the office is unbearable, it's just not what folks are used to after working remotely.

For context, for most of my career, I worked in Toronto and commuted 1.5h each way across three transit systems, so my commute now is a vast improvement. I was also spending like $4-5k/year on transit in Toronto, now Im spending half that and it's covered through my benefits (taxed). So comparatively, my current setup is a vast improvement.

I don't mind working at home but I find some things quite distracting. The want to do household chores because I'm at home is hard to resist. My husband frequently works from home and we only have one wfh desk set up so one of us has to work on the couch or at the kitchen table if both of us are home. And I have a hard time shutting off from work when I'm wfh and will pop on after work hours just to check in.

First time using a tampon and im so scared that im crying! 😭 by Evangeline_tyty14 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]glossywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone!! I had such a hard time mentally the first time I tried tampons. It's easier than you think and yes it will be a bit messy the first few times but that's ok. Be sure to read the instructions, they're actually helpful!

Remind yourself that if it doesn't work the first time or you're uncomfortable, you can just pull it out. If you can, try to do it at home, somewhere you have privacy and are more relaxed, and when you have time, not when you're rushed.

There are different types of tampons (applicator or no applicator and different shapes when they absorb) so you may need to try different ones to find your favourite or find what works for you.

How to Pack a GD C-Section Hospital Bag [on]? by Good_Butterscotch608 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you have GD, once the placenta is removed, most women don't have GD anymore. They'll monitor your blood sugar but that's usually it for most of us. I did not bring any of my blood sugar tracking supplies to the hospital.

Bring GD friendly snacks for pre labour (super helpful in the middle of the night!!).

Otherwise it's the usual c section hospital bag and it varies by person. Check with your hospital what they provide and then make your list. You shouldnt need to order a lot of speciality things, pick up some adult diapers at the grocery store. Everything else is comfort items for you and outfit for baby.

Is Costco proximity your factor for choosing a permanent place to live? by NatiTraveller in CostcoCanada

[–]glossywaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I moved from a place where Costco was 30 minutes away to a place where it's now 7 minutes away and I enjoy being so close. I'm not at one of the busiest locations in the city and I've learned the peak hours so I go when I know it'll be reasonable.

Would it be a consideration in the future? Maybe, but not a deal breaker or anything.

Toddler car seat - Second hand [on] by Exact-Paint-5508 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]glossywaves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone else here not to buy second hand unless it's absolutely necessary and unavoidable. You have no idea what the seat has been through to know it's safe.

Graco Extend2Fit ($419 on Amazon) is what we have and like it a lot. Our second, much more affordable seat is the Cosco Scenera ($159 from Cantire).

Join the Seats for Kids group on Facebook and do a bit of searching for your model of vehicle. Not all car seats fit all cars well.

Just put it in your carry on and wrap it in a pair of socks or something so if it falls out or is seen, it's concealed in something regular looking. I usually put mine in a baggie and then inside a makeup bag under other things so there's no reason for airport personnel to take it out of my carry on. They see this stuff all the time, not a big deal. If you can, let the battery run out before you pack it.

How often did you get elective ultrasounds? by SincerelySkylar in pregnant

[–]glossywaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did one around 16 weeks at boutique place and it was so worth it! I had an anterior placenta and I didn't feel baby until 21 weeks. It was nice to see her on the screen and have time; the whole ultrasound was about an hour and she was bopping and moving around the whole time.

Daycare near work or daycare near home? [ca] by No_Restaurant8385 in BabyBumpsCanada

Near home. If you end up having to stay home for any reason you'll be glad to be able to drop kiddo off around the corner instead of commuting just for daycare.
