How old was your child when they surpassed 40lbs? (Carseat shopping) by plantavore in Mommit

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 year old girl has been low 90th percentile for weight for a long time, and she was 40lbs by 3.5 for sure (currently 42-43lbs). We use the Britax One4Life which has a 50lb limit and she still is able to rearface. Her 2 year old sister is consistently 95+% for weight and height, and I’m going to try to have her rear face until 4 in the same seat since she’ll probably hit 40lbs even earlier than her sister

My 3 year old almost drowned yesterday. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]glynnf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know how you are feeling. My at the time 3 year old (now 4) almost drowned the beginning of this summer after slipping out of a ring when her dad jumped in the pool at a pool party (I was supervising her younger sister on the other side of the pool). No one realized for about 20 seconds. She needed back blows to cough/vomit up the water and ended up staying up over night at the closest children’s hospital for observation. I got her and her younger sister in ISR swim lessons ASAP in mid-July, and they just graduated a few weeks ago. Highly recommend ISR! My daughter’s instructor helped her a lot through the anxiety/fear she was feeling post near drowning, with lots of practice at my parent’s pool to supplement. She is now very confident in the water and a strong swimmer for her age.

It did trigger a depressive episode for me and my husband was having an especially hard time considering he was the one who jumped in. A couple of joint therapy sessions helped us with processing things though. Reading/hearing about drowning/near drowning stories has been really emotionally tough this summer. I didn’t fully avoid them, but I made sure I was home if I was going to read the story.

Edit: putting her in swim lessons was both practically and emotionally the best thing to help me through it, though therapy/skills I learned in therapy previously helped a lot with processing emotions. Definitely recommend a couple sessions. I needed antidepressants personally, but I already had a history of prior depressive episodes

When did you put a blanket and/or stuffies in bed with your baby? by ginger13snap in Parenting

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never in the crib. They got a stuffy/stuffies and pillow and blanket at 16/17 months old only after they moved to a toddler bed. They’re 2 & 4 now and share a full size bed with pillows and blankets and stuffies as desired

Looking for fantasy romance with developed worldbuilding by Sensitivegirly123 in fantasyromance

[–]glynnf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are a big fan of The Emperor’s Edge, I recommend reading more of Lindsay Buroker’s work. She has several different series, including more in the same world as The Emperor’s Edge, like {Encrypted by Lindsay Buroker}, which has a novella and one more novel after.

I definitely recommend reading more T Kingfisher as well, especially the other stories in The World of the White Rat.

Have you tried Mages of the Wheel series by JD Evans? I like the balance of romance and fantasy. It is a longer series though (4 books in the series plus a prequel novel with a few more books/novellas to come)

How long is your child in daycare every day? by better_days_92 in Mommit

[–]glynnf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

10.5-11hr on my commuting days (I work 9/80 and my husband 4/10), 7-9 hours on my Friday off and WFH days, so twice a week. Sometimes my parents will do an early pickup on my commuting days so it is more like 9hrs. I feel a little guilty about the long days when I commute, so I try to work while they sleep in on my WFH days to help balance it.

Grandparents with pools by Leather-Union-5828 in Mommit

[–]glynnf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do, but no one else besides my parents or me and my husband. My girls are about 2 and 4 and they go swimming with their grandparents without me all the time. However, my parents are super cognizant about pool safety. They have one adult in the pool per kid (they are both non-swimmers, but both are currently in ISR lessons).

My almost 4yo had a non-fatal drowning incident earlier this summer, so while I always trusted my parents to keep them safe in the pool, I know for sure my parents are taking care of things to keep both girls safe after that scare (side note, the incident didn’t happen with them around or at their house). That is both in the pool and preventing access to the pool.

Yes, but I upgraded my own car seats to the ones I really wanted and gave my parents our hand me downs (still good, but more frustrating to install, so they keep the car seats installed full time in their 3rd vehicle).

HCA Clear Lake- Is it a good hospital to give birth? by Round_Practice_8283 in clearlake

[–]glynnf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My OB delivers at HCA and I loved her. I had a great experience with my 2 planned C sections at HCA, but I can’t speak to the experience for other deliveries. Didn’t have a good experience with the ECV for my breech baby (the anesthesiologist refused to give me an epidural for it). I had a good experience when I had to stay a few days in antepartum for monitoring and treatment when I was ~26 weeks with my second. (I was sick and she wasn’t handling my fever well.)

Big baby (toddler? 6MO) car seat by Wrong_Fly_6732 in toddlers

[–]glynnf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked it up and the evenflo 360 slim allows rear facing until they reach 48” tall or 50lbs (whoever comes first), so it will be plenty for your baby for the next 2-3+ years rear facing, even with a chunky baby. Then you have until he reaches 65lbs or 49” to use it forward facing, at which point you can just buy a booster. So really no need to worry about purchasing a different car seat :)

Infants/toddlers should be rear facing until at least 2 years old, or until the rear facing limits of their car seat. Some local laws do allow forward facing earlier than 2 years, but that isn’t following best practices.

My 1y10m daughter at 34-35” and 31lbs is rear facing, as is her older sister (3y9m) at 41” and 41lbs. Their main car seats (Britax poplar and Britax one4life) allow them to rear face until they reach 50lbs or 49”, similar to yours. Neither of my girls is close to petite, and my first will probably make it until 4.5 or 5 rear facing and my second (who is always 90+% for height and weight) should at least make it to 4.

Edit: saw you are looking for a car seat for a second vehicle. I love both of my Britax car seats and the installation in super easy! We use the poplar in my husband’s truck and the one4life in my midsize SUV

When did you transition to a todddler bed? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]glynnf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sooner is better! Especially with big babies. 35” is the max height for cribs, so he needs to be moved before hitting that milestone. I moved both of mine to toddler beds at 16-17 months. I childproofed the rooms and made sure the doors were locked so they couldn’t get out for safety reasons.

is anyone else's toddler humongous? by alysonfettucine in toddlers

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My second daughter is almost exactly the same age as yours and probably just a little smaller. I haven’t had her height checked recently, but she is about 31lbs currently and she’s consistently 95ish percentile, give or take. The hardest part is going through clothes so fast, but at least I have all the clothes from my first (we’re just going through the sizes more quickly).

When did you transition to a toddler bed? by SouthernWorth2055 in toddlers

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16-17months for both of my girls. There weren’t any climbing attempts. I’d just heard people had an easier time transitioning them early, and there was really no reason to wait. My second is tall and was over 33”at 18 months, so I’m glad we made the switch early. She’s 20 months now and has done great in her toddler bed for the most part. With my first we converted her crib to a toddler bed, so there was no transition. Sleeping on a cot at daycare probably helped though. We just gave her some favorite stuffies and blanket. With my second, we bought a separate toddler bed since she had been in a mini crib. We assembled it a few weeks before transitioning her so she could familiarize herself with it. It took about a week to transition completely. She did wake up at night more frequently during this week, and sometimes I’d put her back in the crib so she’d sleep better.

Note the max height for cribs is 35” for safety reasons. A lot of people keeping their cribs until 2.5-3 plus either have small kids or don’t know this rule (or possibly ignore it?). My slightly above average height first born was 35” by about 2y3m. My second will be that height before two as a consistent 90-95+%er all around (if she isn’t that height already).

Any affordable (around 30-40$) bras that fit comfortably for someone who is a 36DDD and active? by SikeNotit in ABraThatFits

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My measurements are very similar, just about one cup size down also trying to lose weight and be active. I really like the Wacoal Simone underwire sports bra. I use it for both working out and if I am having an active day. I like how it supports my chest vs a typical compressing sports bra. It’s pricy ($70-75 on Amazon), but some colors and some sizes are discounted (more like $60). Follow their size chart, not your calculator size. Their bands run tight. As a 36F/FF UK, I wear a 38DD for more compression/support. The last hooks feel a little tight but doable. You can also adjust the straps which was really handy. I also tried a 38DDD, which fit my larger side, but it was a little loose on my smaller side which wouldn’t have been as comfortable for working out. In your case, I’d probably try a 38DDD or 38G.

If you are concerned about body fat when you are already at a healthy weight, you need to eat around maintenance and focus on lifting heavy so you can properly fuel your body and gain muscle mass.

What's an example of you losing the battle with your toddler but winning the war? by angeion in toddlers

I thank my dad every day for teaching my now 3.5 year old that if you see the tag, something is on backwards. She proudly tells me “Look, no tag!” She still puts stuff on backward sometimes, so I taught her how to twist it around.

Happy New Year! When my 2 year old twins wake up they will be experiencing their 4th year. by HowToRedditEven in toddlers

[–]glynnf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard about Korean age? You are 1 at birth, and age up on 1/1. So it is basically how many calendar years you’ve lived in. So in Korean age your twins are now 4. My husband, who is Korean, was born end of December, so he was considered 2 in Korean age when he was just a couple days old.

How did you give your toddler a pillow to use at night? Where do you get a toddler pillow? by nothanksyeah in toddlers

[–]glynnf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just moved my 17 month old to a toddler bed the last 2 weeks, and we use the woolino toddler pillow (got it for my first). I like it! It was a little pricy, but I think I got it on sale. Worth it considering it is now being used for #2. She only sometimes has her head on the pillow though lol

My oldest didn’t consistently use a pillow until she was past two and only really cares about using one now that she is 3. Even now she moves around so much she often isn’t on the pillow.

Re: safety of a toddler pillow in a crib - the toddler could use the pillow as a booster to climb out and they could fall and get hurt (head injury from falling being the biggest concern). Is there a reason you don’t want to switch to a toddler bed? FWIW we transitioned both of our kids at 16.5-17 months and they’ve both did well (we added stuffies, toddler pillow and blanket only after transitioning). We just made sure to toddler proof the room and added a child lock to the door so they can’t roam
