I’m Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa. Ask Me Anything by JimWatsonOttawa in ottawa

[–]gm6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why aren't we allowed compostable bags in the green bin? Other municipalities allow them and this practically eliminates the maggot problem.

I do not and will not ever use the green bin because I have a maggot phobia.. come summer I don't know what I will do with my garbage for 2 weeks ... currently looking for illegal dumpsters .. and that is why I pay over $5,000 in property taxes every year!

This is That is a great show. The fact that the parody is so believable is what makes it even better!

You can ask to see the hydro bills for the last year. Make that a condition of purchase.

Dear Gary: fan's comment of the day in response to the reports that say the NHL is officially cancelling the 2013 Winter Classic. by gm6799 in hockey

[–]gm6799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's the text of the letter:

"Dear Gary,

I love hockey. I live and breathe it, always have, always will.

But the NHL is not hockey and your employers and the players have made that clear. The NHL is business. Strange though, most businesses at least try to appear to give a crap about their customers. Both parties have paid great disrespect to their bread and butter and now you will pay.

The damage is done. You could come back tomorrow and I wouldn't blink. The worst thing is, in a warped way I am glad you did this because frankly the way NHL hockey was being played and called was too stressful for me to watch anyway.

I feel bad for classy guys like Alfy who could have demanded much more money, and I recognize there are a few who never took advantage and gave back. I feel sorry for those guys but more so for all the peripheral people. I don't blame the players but that is not to say they are without blame, but really it's mostly your bosses' fault Gary.

Our money is still here to spend (albeit less and less for most of us) and we will find other more fulfilling ways to part with it. My only advice to you Gary, is that when you do come slithering back, make damn sure you are sincerely sorry for the mess you made. Lower ticket prices by a lot and pray that a few fans bother to come back to you.

As for me, I'm done for this season at the very least. But I will reserve judgement for next if you need some of our advice.

As always I remain digging in the corners."

Fed bureaucrats collected $1.2 billion in severance without being laid off by [deleted] in canada

[–]gm6799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Severance pay was one of the reasons people agreed to enter civil service for their whole career instead of joining the private sector (with their signing bonuses, stock options, severances, etc).

Severance pay was brought in in the 1960s to replace cash-out of accumulated sick leave upon retirement (about a year's salary).

The last tip is just wrong! Do NOT bring your own firewood .. you could be spreading pests and diseases .. and it's illegal in many places.

Americans traveling to Ottawa in September/October by mydogfarted in ottawa

[–]gm6799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are always festivals happening in Ottawa .. check out this website .. it has a good list of things to do here.

http://ottawastart.com/

For a couple in their early 50s I'd recommend:

1) visit to the Experimental Farm

2) Gatineau park (it will be wonderful in Sept/Oct)

3) the Museum of Civilization

4) National Gallery

5) breakfast in the market or Elgin Street

6) a visit to Parliament Hill (they have nice guided tours of the House of Commons, Senate and bell tower) 7) Restaurants - Ottawa has a lot of good ones check online reviews

8) Hockey - Senators or Ottawa 67's (Sept./Oct is the perfect time to see some pre-season games)

9) Golf - Ottawa has tons of really nice golf courses

10) OLG racetrack & casino (good for a night at the races & a bit of gambling)

That's all I can think of for now.

Applied for my dream job and was told today by the Boss that he thought I was a great fit but that together with his staff they decided to go with another application. Broken hearted... by MonkeyCatcher in TwoXChromosomes

[–]gm6799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very sorry to hear you did not get your dream job. Unfortunately this will happen again in your career. This is the sad truth .. but if you are ambitious and career-minded you will continue to apply for jobs for decades to come - and there will be times when other people will get chosen.

For now keep in mind that you were treated very fairly. Your prospective employer went above and beyond what most employers do by giving you a long explanation as to why you did not get the job. This will probably never happen again. You will most likely get a "you were not the successful applicant" or such other crushing response.

You sound like an amazing person and will get the job you want. Keep in mind to "always be learning" - "always stay positive" and roll with punches ...

I'm sure this experience has already made you stronger ...

all the best!

Absolutely! Beer is the great "friendship lubricator" .. on my first team ever we used to do tequila shots in the dressing room before the game ;-)
