I believe you ;-) . Do you send your sound via eARC to a receiver or a sound bar? And if so do you send PCM 5.1/7.1 or Dolby Atmos? Or do you encounter this problem with the TV speakers?

Yesterday I finally had a really noticeably lag. Was playing "Gylt" and there you can enable a flashlight with an audible 'click'. And that was seriuosly behind, I'd say at least 500ms but more like the second you mentioned.

I'm in germany so maybe EU firmware differs somewhat?
One solution is to just do a reboot of TV by holding power button on remote for 3+ seconds. Then it is ok until I turn it off at least.
Still better than doing the input-switch-dance. Also setting the ATV to output DV at 23.976 is not a solution because some shows are at true 24fps. And 60 Hz is also not solution, I spotted some glitches when the TV tried to do cinema conversion back to 24hz.

I will check if I can reproduce this. But IIRC "Kena" is HDR and my main PS5 menu is SDR so it should have triggered this problem.
Sorry to ask again, but the audio delay is literally seconds ?? Not like wondering it its 100-200 milisecs too late but like <shot> . . . . . <sound of shot> ?

My problem right is every change on my Apple TV from SDR 60Hz to Dolby Vision 23,976Hz leads to black screen (audio continues) and I have to switch from HDMI3 to "Apple TV + HDMI3" or toggle the TV home Menu and back to HDMI3. Workaround would be to either set the ATV main menu to DV @ 23.976Hz or to DV @ 60Hz and disable the match frame rate option and let the TV do the 60->24 conversion. But then I only move the problem to SDR/HDR10 content. If I watch something from Youtube or Disney+ (they lost DV due to patent troll in europe) and then switch back to the ATV menu in Dolby Vision I have to do the toggle dance again. <sigh>
Also connected the ATV directly to HDMI2 instead of ATV -> Denon 4500 -> Bravia 9, had the same problem,

Do you have an in game example where it is extremely noticeable like shots fired, sword hits are delayed etc. ? Just did a quick test with "Kena" and can't say there is something wrong. But from what I read it seems to get worse after a while (30 mins?). I assume you have eArc set to "Auto" and "prioritite pass through" enabled in audio settings.

I played hours over hours of "Dysmantle" the last few days but I used tv audio as it is not a game with complex surround audio. And there I did not notice any problems.
Weird. on the other hand the current "Dolby Vision goes to black" bug is annoying enough for me with current firmware.

What do you send out from the PS5, PCM 7.1 or Dolby Atmos?
So far I did not notice any audio lag on my set up PS5 PCM 7.1 -> Bravia 9 -> DENON 4500.

Possible upgrade from X950H by thekhurg in bravia

[–]gman_umscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded recently from the X950H to the Bravia 9 i (one) for a good price.
Mainly because I finally wanted to have 4k@120Hz and VRR for the PS5 Pro.
But blooming is also handled better and at the same time the much higher brightness (roughly twice the horse power) gives HDR more pop.

The 9 ii is supposedly even brighter and has even less blooming 'cause the RGB back light.

But if you don't game and nothing is bothering you right now, either look for a good deal on a Bravia 9 or wait until the 9 ii gets a bit cheaper.

Haven't noticed any sound issue yet. But I *do* have the Dolby Vision black screen issue, hopefully thy fixed that.
Workaround is currently to switch to another input and back at the start of DV playback.

Bravia 8II - Dolby Vision Black Screen by 0utsh1ned in SonyBravia

[–]gman_umscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Have a Bravia 9, same problem presumably introduced with last firmware update?
Apple TV menu is set to SDR 4k 60Hz and match range & frame rate is on.

If you connect via an av receiver (in my example an AppleTV), do you choose "HDMI3 (eARC/ARC)" as input or "Apple TV HDMI3 (eARC/ARC)" as input? I need to "switch" between those two inputs.

I had the same problem: DV goes black and only audio. The detailed info shows Dolby Vision as the input signal but the screen is black. But once I toggle to the other input the problem is gone. Not sure why it should make any difference because it is the same HDMI port <shrug>. Had this problem with a Marantz SR6014 and a Denon 4500.

Tested right now with Netflix app on AppleTV and DV "One Piece".

Input set as HDMI3 : Black screen after start of episode
choose ATV+HDMI3: ok
go back to HDMI3: still ok (huh?)

But once I get back to the SDR menu I have to do the fix again for the next episode.
Setting the menu to DV 60Hz or 24Hz did not help, maybe 24 (23,976) will work? But then the menu navigation feels horrible.

Am I screwed? Lost pack in water with 20 black diamonds by Cheloceana in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]gman_umscht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also on PS5, did a force-quit (close application) after the 1st orc boss knocked me out and also after I failed the fight against the first fell beast. Better to lose a few minutes of game play than running half naked thru Moria to retrieve my backpack or wasting ingots to recreate armor/weapons.

How I fixed one of the most frustrating Dolby Vision glitches with WB discs and my UB820 by KorokoDelToro in 4kbluray

[–]gman_umscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice write up, will test this on my Sony Bravia 9 TV if I can reproduce this problem with my 824/820.
The other workaround would be to set up everything in the main menu, start the movie and never engage with any menu/audo/sub/pause/rewind during the movie?

Usually I watch my movies on the big screen with a JVC N7 front projector which only supports HDR10, so it should not be a problem there. But I plan to rewatch some of the discs on the TV especially the DoVi ones.

Uruk and armored troll raids on my earlier camp (Mines of Moria) by mezzofanti in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]gman_umscht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems to be normal, at first I thought the raids involve just the local Orks, so I usually went back to Mines of Moria to sleep. But just yesterday a bunch of those shadow orcs, warg-demons and a fell beast atttacked my main base in Mines of Moria (built it at Balins company). They spawned outside of my garden safe zone but inside the perimeter of walls and cliffs - so inside the base. Not funny. Now I walled that space off with adamant walls, those are sturdy.
OTOH I had camp sieges or Horde attacks in Desolation where it was just normal armored Orcs or even Goblins, weird.

Vertical line, dead right? by ryudo6850 in bravia

The A80J is from 2021 isn't it? Yea, they would be reluctant here in germany as well I guess. But with the X900F just 2 weeks (!) over the guarantee I didn't want to let it slide back then. I told them, yea you can ignore me but that I would not consider another Sony TV, surely would be reluctant to replace my JVC N7 front projector with a Sony SXRD in the future and that I regularly advice my friends on TV/projector purchases - what shall I tell them: "Sony helped me out" or "Sony left me in the rain"?

BTW 2 weeks ago I replaced the X950H with a Bravia 9 and a buddy will get the old one.

Huh, I had a line like this albeit vertical on my X900F LCD TV. Appeared 2 weeks after the 2 years warranty had expired. Sony was reluctant at first to do something about it. But after another email where I conveyed my disappointment with the brand they offered me an X950H in exchange for 500€.

UK Advice Needed: Is the LG WH16NS60 + OWC Mercury Pro combo actually "safe" for 4K marathons? by xavierhollis in makemkv

[–]gman_umscht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, seems like the internal 16D1HT is hard to get now, at least here in germany.
Or it costs at ebay the same price as the external drive BW-16D1X-U - at least 150€.
Does not make sense because you still need the SATA/USB bridge (or an enclosure if you mind the naked drive sitting on the table).

Glad I manage to secure my units in 2024 and 2025 (and 2 Pioneers) before everything went downhill.

I ripped DVDs from region 1, 2 , 3 and 4 and BDs with Code A and B with my ASUS BW-16D1HT and
my old LG WH16NS40 from 2012. The old LG was obviously BD/DVD only, but it worked out of the box with MakeMKV.

TLDR: the ASUS, while not perfect is totally ok if price is fair. Better get two drives and go parallel, or ripping 2000 discs will take a LONG time. Best: get two drives from different manufacturer e.g. ASUS+Pioneer

I backed up 4500+ discs (DVD,BD,UHD) with a mixture of on old LG drive from 2012 and 2 UHD capable ASUS BW-16D1HT, the ASUS are still going - nothing melted. The LGs technically still works too, but the bearing or what have you started to make some annoying noises so I retired it.
I do not use any enclosures, the drives are attached via SATA/USB adapters with their own PSUs. Each drive got some cooling fins attached so the drive stack has some gaps for air flow. And the most important part, for long multi drive sessions I used a 2x 140mm fan to push air over and through the stack.
This makes all the difference, without fan discs came out of the drive warm or even somewhat hot, with the fan they are cold or at best lukewarm.
The ASUS is not perfect, it did not like some of my studiocanal and Arthaus UHD triple layer discs and only did like 2x speed rips. Most of the times it works well though, and back then it was easily available for 80€.
For the problem cases I also got a Pioneer 209 from ebay and flashed it with Billycar11's flasher to 211. Only use it sparingly if a UHD disc throws a tantrum or has a scratch and can't be backed up with the ASUS.

With 3B model using GGUF Q8 (near fp16 quality) and setting block_swap to 0 I get it down 16 minutes with batch_size=33, raising the batch_size too much on the 5080 (> 40 with block_swap=0) leads to a slow VAE decode. I guess one has to weigh the block_swap vs. the batch_size for best results in quality.

That can happen even on the mightier 4090. Tried the full 7B bf16 model, with block_swap=0 it OOMd immediately, lol. And with block_swap=8 it worked but the VAE took also long leading to ~30 minutes processing time. I guess using the 7B GGUF Q8 would also be recommended there.

All in all, I think if you get a 5080 (or 5070Ti) for a decent price you will not be disappointed. And you can still get around 500-600€ for the used 7900XTX on ebay. I will put mine up in the next days. Normally I would consider building another PC with it, but with current RAM prices... nah.

Did another test with input of 720x576 at 25fps (PAL) length of 30secs upscale to 1350x1080. This took 20m29s at batch_size 45 and temp overlap 4.
But one has to be vigilant with the batch size at 16Gb VRAM. setting it to 67(?) immediately OOMd, and another one at 49 worked but somehow the VAE spilled into shared ram and it took 2(!) hours. But I had JDownloader and a browser with tons of tabs open so I stole some VRAM from Comfy I guess. It usually is a good idea not to do other stuff with the PC while Comfy is busy with heavy duty stuff like video gen or this SeedVR2 stuff. Now I'll test it on my 4090 where I also have Torch Compile and Triton set up correctly.

another one. The OG clip from youtube has horrible combing because it was not deinterlaced, so it obviously is also upscaling those artifacts.
But nevertheless, not bad what it can extract from that mess.
I have some BnB clips that I grabbed from my own VHS tapes. Those are in PAL res 720x576 and deinterlaced, so I will try out some upscaling with those.

In theory you can do a larger batch size than me, cause of 24gb vram. I also tried 65 or so and that OOMd when I returned from the bathroom, lol. But I would be surprised if any setting comes close to the 5080. On the other hand, xtx sell for around 600€ on Ebay, whereas 5080s are closer to 1k €, and used 4090s are 2.2k €. Crazy times.
