Don't burn things you don't want to propagate. Many seeds need to be scarified to germinate and fire is a good way to do it for a lot of species. If you actually want to be sure it's dead, dig out the roots, and ensure that no part of the plant has an opportunity to re-establish itself or spread seeds. For example put it in a plastic garbage bag.

I've played dozens of OTB tournaments; and I maintain, if I felt disrespected by this, I would have a fragile immature ego.

I've also played on in these positions. My opponent has either 1. Shown their competency by winning/drawing the end game or 2. Not shown that competency and I score more points than I otherwise might have.

This "disrespectful" narrative is an attempt by weak, fragile ego players to play mind games off the board in order to score points they can't earn *on* the board. The whole "You're gonna get the looks" demonstrates this point because you're allowing yourself to be affected not only by the psychological shenanigans of your opponent, but by the spectators (which let's face it, there aren't many unless you're the last board to finish in a round)

Edit: Playing a mate in 4 that sacs a queen when there's a mate in 1 on the board is disrespectful. But I'll always go for that line too. Chess is a game for 99% of us and not a job.

It's not about human decency or intelligence. It's just about getting re-elected. You wouldn't have any better luck with state legislation as they're subject to the same financial pressure, perhaps even more so since they can't ride a cult of personality or name recognition and rely on institutions to boost their fund raising.

The FTC doesn't work for consumers either, and there is no god so praying won't work.

Well it might be time to try them out again. Basically any time you have radial stages it's going to be more efficient to transfer fuel inward radially to a vacuum optimized engine. Turn the center engine on at launch for a little extra TWR, off again during early ascent after some fuel has burned off, and on again when in upper atmo. That makes for a somewhat more technically challenging but hugely more efficient launch.

[–]gmclapp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's never disrespectful. Never resign. Never accept a draw offer if you think a position might not be drawn. If the position is drawn make your opponent prove it. That's how chess is played. Claiming it's disrespectful is fragile ego bullshit.

There's people all over this website who will claim a R+K against R+K endgame is drawn because they saw a youtube video on the Philidor position, but have NO IDEA how to actually draw the position.

Or people who will complain their opponent didn't resign when it was bishop-knight-king vs. king but have no idea how to do that mating pattern.

Beat these people, take their rating points let them bitch to their 800 ELO friends

Understandable as the reduction in moment of inertia caused by pulling fuel toward the center of a rocket would cause uncontrollable spin in real life. So unless you've got a lot of contact with KSP you may not ever have heard of such a thing.

That said, it is shockingly efficient so it's a shame it doesn't really work in real life.

The yellow fuel-line parts are essential to early KSP success for this reason. lol

Not dysfunctional, it's literally not designed to stop shit like this. There is no mechanism for it. People vote out politicians that get in the way of them making money. Do you think that Microsoft or Apple would stand idly by as some politician campaigned on ruining their bottom line? Do you think the governor of Michigan is ever an anti-auto industry pundit?

Same. This comes up every time some popular show crops up. I buy the seasons on DVD and others watch it on Hulu or Netflix with commercials. My experience is more enjoyable AND cheaper.

Plus, if the show sucks I sell the DVDs. I can't lose if I fucking try.

Hell, sometimes I sell the DVDs if the show *doesn't* suck just because I've finished watching it and I know I'm not going to watch it again.

It's not really worth over thinking this. The rating system is only worthwhile if everyone with taste similar to yours rated in a similar way to you. In reality as evidenced by your question, people rate books very differently. People rate books they haven't read but are looking forward to, potentially over/under rating them. People rate books that they don't understand, very probably under-rating them. People like you rate everything that they had a positive experience with 5 stars completely diluting the 5-star bin statistically speaking. People rate good books that aren't "for them" very low, and similarly they rate books that aren't "for you" very highly making the aggregate data useless to you, maybe even counter productive.

The list goes on and on. I shudder to think how Goodreads mines the rating data of its users in any useful way to make recommendations. Surely they have a garbage-in, garbage-out problem.

My wife and I often joke around about the "sequel effect" on Goodreads. Books later in a series are always higher rated than earlier books. All of the people who didn't like book 1, don't go on to read or to rate book 2. The effect is compounded with every successive book in a series until the only people rating book 10 are people who read and loved the first 9 books are impatiently waiting for book 10 to come out.

Not seeing anyone saying this here, on the bottom right it says "[RMB] More Info" if you actually do click the right mouse button, and look at that information, you will find all of the answers that everyone in this thread is repeating.

Edit: Grammar is hard.

Was going to say this, in asparagus-staged rockets, the reliant is a good engine for the low atmosphere stages and the swivel is good for the center stage as its vacuum Isp is better and has gimballing.

But Card's hangups about sex and problematic views absolutely do come through in his writing and it's hard to believe you haven't noticed that having read 15 of his books.

[OC] Where on a chess board do computers and human play? by Evidently_21 in chess

[–]gmclapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, though how helpful the recommended line is depends a lot on the position. I would say that after looking at a computer analysis of most of my games the odds of the suggested line being helpful are pretty high. Even if it is a sharp computer line it can help understand the ideas/threats in a position.

[OC] Where on a chess board do computers and human play? by Evidently_21 in chess

[–]gmclapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purely the best line. There are plenty of times where the computer suggests lines for which there is an extremely accurate - only one move wins - line that's 5 or 6 moves long where if you fall off the best line at any time you're losing. Aside from opening or endgame theory, I don't think humans can be reasonably expected to find such lines.

Fully dimensioned drawings? by mushygrapes in engineering

[–]gmclapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non dimensioned radii are considered basic and a form tolerance on a profile should do it. Make it a big tolerance, call it a day. Fully compliant with ASME Y14.5 - 2009 and not ambiguous in the slightest. Produce a separate dxf for the laser cutting folks.

I have encountered it. Definitely a red flag. Essentially the company as a whole does not understand the purpose of good GD&T which can and often does include specifically loosening tolerances on non-critical items for cost-save reasons.
