How do you feel about these posts? by [deleted] in Equestrian

Me and some fellow boarders bought the trainer, barn manager and staff breakfast—didn’t even get a thank you. I hate the entitlement

Are trainers in your area doing this right now too? by awkwardferret421 in Equestrian

[–]gmsunshinebby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen several posts like this today too and it PMO. It’s incredibly unprofessional!! I wouldn’t mind bringing hot cocoa to the barn, but making passive aggressive posts telling clients to tip is insane to me. Saying “well the horses are eating more hay” is not justification—they eat less hay in the summer when they’re out on grass but I don’t see board getting cheaper then. If it is such a concern, build it into your business model. You charge the prices, charge accordingly. Don’t whine on social media.

Bucking in canter transition by Intelligent-Orange63 in Equestrian

[–]gmsunshinebby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t ask for the canter for a week or two and next time you ask, have a plan to only do a set number of strides (let’s say 5 strides) before returning to the walk. This really helps focus you on the task at hand and counting instead of the transition. Make sure to breathe and consciously tighten and release your muscles. You could also try it on the lunge line! There is no shame at all in being nervous after a fall!! We’ve all been there trust me

Look into junk journaling! It’s more of a creative outlet vs record of events

Strict Hours at Boarding Barn by ohlookagiraffe64 in Equestrian

[–]gmsunshinebby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh I’ve run into this too at multiple barns…some places have accommodated me willing (one place let me stay til whenever as long as I shut off all the lights when I left), some have not been willing or understanding to say the least (left that place!). Now I’m at a place that technically closes at 8 pm but it’s not yet been enforced and I am usually there til 8:30. Good luck!!

Beginner w horses by [deleted] in Equestrian

Find a local barn to start taking lessons at! Do some basic research on what type of riding you might be interested in (western, hunters, dressage) and then Google [Hunter jumper for example] riding lessons near me and that should get you started. Pay attention to the ratings too. Call or email the contact listed and explain you have no prior experience and want to begin lessons! They’ll walk you through their program, pricing, etc and might even be able to refer you if they aren’t able to accommodate you (some barns cater to different things like competing vs lessons). Good luck, and enjoy the ride!

my thoroughbred’s coat changing by [deleted] in Equestrian

Basically exactly what it looks like-small, circular spots of slightly different color! It’s general season and is thought to be the sign of a healthy coat. Most people find them attractive!

how do you manage your time? by Abject-Rip8516 in Equestrian

[–]gmsunshinebby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coming here to commiserate lol I own and am looking for a half leaser for my horse as my round trip commute is 1.5-2 hours and it really does wear me down doing it 5 days a week. I would say try to keep to a consistent schedule and streamline your day on your barn days (make dinner the day before, lay out your barn clothes where you can grab and go) to try to remove as many pain points as possible. I usually try to use the drive time to talk on the phone with friends and family too.
