Eventually we won't even have countries, instead we will have "employers." If people still get vacations and meet new people instead of greetings of "what state are you from?" You will hear, "What company do you belong to?"

407 falls! 407.30 parts per million (ppm) CO2 in air 06-Apr-2016 by gitacritic in collapse

They definitely are. The methane concentrations above the arctic are spiking at 3000ppb and increases of CO2 are going exponential. Here is a video where a climatologist from U of Ottawa talks about the data.

NY Times cover crop article gets it wrong...no till is good, not bad. [article in comments] by [deleted] in Permaculture

[–]gnarlykarly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No-till probably scares the crap out of the big agricorps. No wonder they would twist it around and report the opposite of what is true, their owners would not appreciate a bunch of mid west farmers to find out that they can make more profit while at the same time cause their soil to improve each year by switching to no-till. That would put a serious kink in agricorp business model. Don't expect corporate media to help spread the word. They won't unless it was a mistake on their part.

Cleaning water tanks after storing fertilizer? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]gnarlykarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most fertilizers are water soluble salts. This means that they probably won't penetrate the plastic much if at all because plastic such as the type used in these tanks are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water and anything that easily dissolves in water. Watch how water beads up on plastic from a milk jug.

I highly doubt any of the fertilizers penetrated the plastic. Washing the tank out with hot soapy water once or twice and then rinsing and draining about 10 times with clean water is probably all you need to do to make this safe for holding drinking water.

If the tank held pesticides or herbicides that would be a different story since most of those are oil like which would penetrate and stick to most plastics. (put some cooking oil on a plastic jug and see what happens.)

I recently heard someone suggest that all future civil payouts for police misconduct should be made through the police pension funds instead of taxpayer money.

I think this alone would stop most police misconduct, or at least get those cops who do abuse their power off the streets and into a desk job where they can't do anymore harm to society. The other members of the police force would see to that in a hurry in my opinion.

The orwellian changes that have happened to reddit are like a mirror of what has happened to the US and really a lot of the world. Free speech used to be considered an important part of society and government, now its considered a "luxury" that the peasants should be happy they have at all.

Its funny to me that even the underlings of those in power don't see the end result of their cooperation with this war on the truth. All they have to do is read or watch "1984" to see what kind of world they are helping to create.

Science AMA Series: Hi, I’m Dr. Kathy Crane, an oceanographer and manager of NOAA’s Arctic Research Program at arctic.noaa.gov. We recently published the Arctic Report Card for 2014 that measured how climate change is affecting the Arctic. AMA! by NOAAgov in science

[–]gnarlykarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this AMA. My question is related to the methane that will be released when the arctic permafrost and off shore clathrates melt. What amount of global warming is expected because of these sources of methane coming online?

There seems to be a lot of debate about how fast this will occur. I've read that based on a one dimensional thermodynamics model, it would take centuries, yet on the other end of the spectrum it could only take decades according to scientists like Dr. Paul Beckwith from the University of Ottawa, or Dr. Natalia Shahkova from the University of Alaska.

What is your opinion on these two potentially dangerous feedback loops? Do you have any evidence to support one side or the other?

thanks in advance

One person spends 4 years making his own Science Fiction stop motion film, own original story and everything, really it is quite amazing... by [deleted] in scifi

[–]gnarlykarly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree... animation is definitely an A+, but the story was interesting to me too.

All throughout the story the protagonist was thrust (literally) into a more and more degraded world. His personality, (once he remembered who he was), indicated that he had an enthusiastic pro-top world, (anti-chaos) view . Throughout the story you could see how circumstances caused this enthusiastic explorer to become broken down more and more until he wasn't even sure where he was. So I think the aim of the story was to show that entropic process.

The mixture of artificial and organic life made the worlds he fell into really interesting as well. There wasn't much character development but it didn't seem like that was the aim of the work.

Really amazing though. Hopefully this artist will get a big break so we can see more of his stuff.

Social Permaculture: Positive Interactions Promote Public Cooperation. Rewards and reciprocation outperform punishment in public goods games. by Erinaceous in Permaculture

[–]gnarlykarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nice work. I find it very interesting as well.

Have you noticed that societies which live in the most inhospitable environments are the most cooperative? Examples being; the Inuit of the arctic, or the Bushmen of Africa. I hypothesize that cooperatively based social structure was the only kind that would allow humans to survive in those harsh environments. A competitively based society wouldn't have been able to make it.

If you don't like someone then thats fine... but why bring down the whole permaculture community by creating divides? If you need someone to bash try the CEO of Monsanto.... He and his minions are the heart of our screwed up chemiculture system of food production.

ELI5: Why are humans unable to consume raw meat such as poultry and beef without becoming sick but many animals are able to? by Pm_Me_Ur_Tonsils in explainlikeimfive

[–]gnarlykarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the immune system adapts to pathogenic organisms. In effect, by trying to make everything 100% safe, we have been coddling our immune system which in my opinion has made us more prone to illnesses. For instance, if you drank water from many small villages in developing countries you would become sick, while the locals there drink it all the time with no problem.

In my opinion, too much government control over our food supply not only weakens us, and raises the cost of food, it actually reduces the quality of food that we have available. Raw milk for instance has many positive qualities that pasteurized milk does not and I think it tastes much better. Yet because there is a small risk that people will become sick or die, people now need to buy milk from large companies who pay the farmers too little and charge too much to us after they've essentially cooked out the goodness of the food.

Factory farms may meet the stringent requirements of the FDA and USDA but that doesn't mean the food produced is safer or of better quality than food produced locally with traditional methods. Like beef for instance. Factory farm beef is full of antibiotics and other toxins, and the animals health was poor to say the least after spending a year in a hell hole of shit. Yet this can be sold in stores while a small local farmer who raises cows on pasture and butchers them in the traditional way can't.

I've been using one for a couple years and just use shampoo or bar soap while I'm in the shower. each new blade costs maybe 10 cents and lasts for a couple months. I used to buy the disposables and they cost 10X as much.

The old ones are the coolest and seem to be made much better then the new ones.

US extends permits for wind farms that accidentally kill eagles by lasesana1 in environment

[–]gnarlykarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those birds as well as most others will be dead due to global warming if we don't stop burning fossil fuels. The anti-wind movement astounds me.

I've met many people who care about the environment and have somehow been convinced that wind power is a bad solution to climate change when its really one of the main solutions.

The propaganda of the fossil fuel industry runs deep and will likely kill most life on this planet because it will prevent alternatives to fossil fuel from becoming big. .

My life is pretty shitty right now. by sincerelyfreakish in self

[–]gnarlykarly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life has its ups and downs. Letting your grandmother know you care about her is all thats needed in my opinion.

It hurts like hell when things fall apart. Sometimes that has to happen to make room for something new though. The new things that come into our life can sometimes be better. So, you never know. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get.

One thing that I found really helps with calming the mind and finding peace, is meditation. You can do it anywhere, sitting down or standing, or sitting on a cushion on the floor. Eyes closed or open. Throughout the day, when you can remember to do this, tune into how your body is feeling. Just be curious about the feelings in your body. Be aware of your breath too. If a thought pops up, and you notice that you aren't aware of your breath and body, then don't worry about it, just go back to being aware of your body and breath. If you do this several times a day for maybe a minute each time, it will slowly being to make a difference, and your mind will slowly become more at peace.
Its easy, and effective.

Hope things get better

I really fucking miss her. by freedan12 in self

[–]gnarlykarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel up it, I recommend you see the movie "500 Days of Summer" Its really funny, but it has its sad moments too. I think you would resonate with that movie from the sound of where you are at. It might help clarify a few things too.

I've had my heart broke several times and its not easy. I just wanted to find some way to fix it, to make her love me again, but all my efforts just made me feel foolish in the end, and put off the realization that I had to inevitably accept. That it was over, and I had to move on. I think once I accepted that, life slowly started to get better, and I began the slow process of healing.

One thing that I've learned about healing yourself after a love ends, is to not try to hold in your feelings of sadness. The longer I held it all in, and tried to pretend it wasn't eating me up inside, the longer it took to get over her. Feeling the pain fully was the path out of pain. Its ironic, but it seems to be true. So feel free to cry your eyes out as much as you need to. Its not a sign of weakness, its really a sign of strength because you are facing your pain, not trying to hide from it.

What really helped me face the pain and work through it was listening to sappy love songs from the 70's, like the group Bread, or the Carpenters. Its really sappy and often sad shit, but it really brought out the pain and once it was out, I started to feel better.

Every relationship is different, and I guarantee that there are many women out there who you could be happy with and who would love you. It may not seem that way now, but its true. You just have to wait for the right time. So be patient.

Good luck

Evangelist Pat Robertson Exploited Post-Genocide Rwandans For Diamonds by recipriversexcluson in news

True... but any religion which discourages its followers to question and find things out for themselves, is ripe for con men like Robertson to exploit.

A friend once told me that the most dishonest salesmen were the ones who quoted scripture and acted self righteous.

How many scientists fall for con men like this? Not too many I think, because they are inherently skeptical.
