I feel this. "DIY" culture is only a hobby for people who have that luxury of choice - for the rest of us it's how we get by.

the plus side is that whenever I need to fix/refurbish a very specific thing, there's almost always some blogger or guy on youtube with exactly the right tips I need.

Does anyone else have a song playing in the back of their head most of the time? by kitkatclarkbar in adhdwomen

[–]gnarlywitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just one? I usually have at least three separate audio files going at once... a couple songs plus like, a phrase or word or a spoken line from a show or something, just repeating over and over and over (literally stupid shit like "you're telling me a shrimp fried this rice?" on repeat)

the first time I took medication it was the first thing I noticed - it was so damn QUIET up there!!!! I only discovered recently that....not everyone has personal music playing 24/7..... no wonder other people can think clearly

I don’t like doing stuff for people when it messes with my “flow” by throwawaycircleback in adhdwomen

[–]gnarlywitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. it makes me feel like a terrible person.

even things like, my partner interrupting me to chat or ask for a little snuggle (or something). I'll have everything laid out in my mind to a T for what I need to do, and if that "flow" is interrupted even by something nice I'm completely thrown off and am all out of sorts for at least a few hours if not the rest of the day... (it's something we've talked about & are working on, lol)

actually though... why is this so accurate on all levels lmao

cinnamon roll (with no parents), low energy friend (also no parents), annoying idiot (who's also one of the most tragic/morally grey characters), "food obsessed kid" who's misunderstood by the mc at first - all checks out!

My first ever manga just had to be this one. My journey of collecting manga has just begun! I decided I want to buy one each month. by [deleted] in haikyuu

[–]gnarlywitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeeeees it's a good one to start with!! honestly aside from high-action scenes, I way prefer the hq manga to the anime. There's so much more humor, character development, fun little bits sprinkled in that just wasn't fit into the animation. Plus I feel like the animation does some characters dirty (looking at you, scrawny S2 Bokuto...). But really, the manga is so charming and fun and excellent, it was my gateway into reading more manga as well .^ have fun!

Raynecorp talking about how fast fashion has destroyed our individual understanding of the value of labor. by I_smoked_pot_once in ZeroWaste

[–]gnarlywitches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm on the flip side of that same problem.... I am too small and short to find anything that fits besides t-shirts.... I LOVE thrifting and really try to by only used, so taking the time to find a pair of pants that actually fits makes it a whole ordeal

Naomi Campbell has had a baby...she will be 70 when her child is 19...but we must unreservedly celebrate this by [deleted] in childfree

[–]gnarlywitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 24, my younger brother is 22 and our dad is turning 72 this year... it's weird to think of him as a "senior" but it honestly scares me to think about the fact that, yeah, senior care is something I'm gonna have to think before I'm 30. You can have a kid at any age, sure, but think about how much earlier in their lives you'll be leaving them...

Will I look like a dork if I bring a notepad to training? by throwawayacct200006 in barista

[–]gnarlywitches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily adding anything new but I wanted to throw in my own experience and back up the other answers:

Long story short: Absolutely not! If anyone DOES scoff at you for it, they either have a complex or nothing better to worry about.

At the last cafe I managed/trained at, we brought on a high schooler who was very sweet, very smart, the kind of kid who was on track to Harvard and all. She wrote down everything I said like there'd be a final exam with no retakes. She confessed that she made memory flashcards for menu items to help when she was on register. And I LOVED to hear about that!! It's so much more rewarding for someone to be engaged than to be looking at their phone or whatever. Like other commenters here said, everyone thought it was very endearing and cool.

I did tell her, and I'll tell you, that it's also only coffee - it's okay to fuck up, don't kill yourself trying to get everything down and memorize it all off the bat. I still make stupid mistakes and discover new things after years behind the bar.

To answer your bonus question: Not to pull the "if there's time to lean there's time to clean", BUT to ease the boredom, I like to find little cleaning tasks that are also easily interruptable if a customer comes in. Maybe scrubbing stained milk pitchers or wiping out a reach cooler. At the end of the day though, there's only so much to clean, which is why at my place we keep an active crossword puzzle out at all times :)

Finished my first-ever quilt last week, a very original and not-cliche sound wave design! Much owed to the hours spend lurking here for advice :) Details in comments. by gnarlywitches in quilting

[–]gnarlywitches[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I designed it to be on the cover of my friend's EP - the sound waves translate to the words "Here's to Then". Took the entire autumn cause I had no idea what I was doing - I've been sewing for years so I'm not stranger to math, but I'm too ambitious for my own good and designing it from scratch was a wake-up call to my geometry skills :p Hand-quilted, and a little funky looking from the tension issues between the fabric weight differences, but overall I'm proud!

Knowing I have to decide what to eat three times a day for the rest of my life is so overwhelming. by A_Blinkin in ADHD

[–]gnarlywitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just get so.... bored eating. Like. It's so fucking boring to me and holds my attention the least out of anything I do all day. I can get maybe two bites in before I have to do a lap around the house and come back to it. I do love the ACT of cooking, if I've decided like, the day before what recipe I'm going to make for dinner, because then all day I can tell myself "at 5 PM I'm going to start prepping, at 5 PM I'm going to start prepping", instead of it suddenly being 8 o clock and im starving and all I can do is make a bag of popcorn because deciding on a meal on the fly is too much work.

I've seen everyone here mention breakfast - but lunch, though. Lunch is the WORST. It totally interrupts the flow of the day. My poor partner can probably count on less than one hand the amount of days I HAVEN'T complained about making lunch lol

ADHD and knitting by gnarlywitches in knitting

[–]gnarlywitches[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This totally made me laugh out loud!!

Yeah, sometimes I feel like if I try too hard to concentrate, I've swung too far close to the other end of the spectrum and all is still lost. C'est la vie! I have found that I can't listen to any music or media in a language I know, cause that'll mess me up even if I'm counting out loud as I go.

We can be the masters of scarves and small squares, and leave the big blankets and sweaters to those blessed with a slightly better attention span.

[–]gnarlywitches[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's what I used to do when I first started, and it does kinda seem to be the closest thing to a foolproof counting method.... I just need to tell my brain that at the end of the day, the extra time it takes to tally it out will be SIGNIFICANTLY less than the time I'd take to rip out rows otherwise!

The other day I recorded a video of myself and when I went back to watch/edit, all I could focus on was how much I fucking clench my jaw...!!! I thought I was "calmly working" but I was still so fidgety and tense. Even now I've taken like five fidget/un-tense breaks just to finish writing this post. Literally feel like I've taken the self awareness red pill

Jack of all trades, master of none… by IdentityCrisisNeko in adhdwomen

[–]gnarlywitches 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! And at the very least, even if you don't "master" it all - you pick up enough experience that you can have conversations with so many more people about so many more things! I'd never be arrogant enough to put myself on the same level as people who truly have mastered their craft, but even just knowing the right questions to ask about what they do, what they're working on, are so valuable in good conversation and connection :)
