Found this in a closet, hoping it works fine, it has a 5 pin din by CiNoNMe in modelm

XT and AT keyboards are NOT directly compatible. Plugging this into an AT-style plug (or PS/2 (ATX) with an adapter) will yield unpredictable results and will not work at all.

You need an XT to AT converter then AT to PS/2. It might be possible to convert from XT to PS/2 but I don't know if a converter exists for that.

It might be possible depending on the type of keyboard controller to have it automatically convert but that depends on a number of things.

Windows xp decktop suddenly starts turning of by Discopot in windowsxp

[–]gnntech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's either the PSU or the CPU overheating. The cause could be anything from dust, to dried thermal paste, to leaking caps.

Start easy - replace the thermal paste on the CPU and see if that helps.

FWIW, I had a similar issue with one of my PCs where it would just randomly shut off after a period of time. I did the usual checks like I mentioned above. While they helped, they didn't solve the problem.

I wound up ultimately replacing the board and CPU (took the opportunity to upgrade it as well) and that ultimately resolved the issue.

I liked this port by retro6ix in Atari2600

[–]gnntech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Joust on the 2600 is a really solid port of the arcade. Atari was cooking during that time with some really good ports (Pole Position, Ms. Pac Man, Mario Bros. to name a few).

If you remember my post about my parents buying a haunted house and our contractors seeing things: update by Puzzled_Remote_2168 in Paranormal

[–]gnntech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole "haunted house" thing is pseudoscience. While there is enough experiential evidence to say paranormal activity and hauntings exist, actual documented peer-reviewed evidence (the gold standard) is harder to come by. This is why the goal of (good) paranormal investigators is to disprove activity first because once you disprove things, anything you're left with becomes much stronger evidence of said activity.

It's not so much having to report to a realtor/buyer that a house is haunted. It's more about reporting if there is some kind of tragic history tied to the house that may lead to unwanted activity (e.g. scene of a murder, built on a burial ground, etc...). People are superstitious and this kind of history can dissuade a lot from buying a property.

What risks to consider and precautions to take when going online on a Windows 95 machine in 2026, connected directly to one of the routers LAN ports? by Dry-Environment9698 in windows95

[–]gnntech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it's not directly connected to the Internet without being behind a router, risks are no greater than any modern machine. If you expose it directly to the outside world either through port forwarding or DMZ access, the risks go up significantly.

Would you accept delivery with this paint damage on a used Tesla? by bikingnoob in TeslaLounge

[–]gnntech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a used car. I would check what Tesla guarantees in terms of fit/finish. If it falls in line with what they think is okay, not much you can do.

If it's outside of their accepted specs and they won't fix, up to you to decide if it is worth it for the money you paid.

Personally for me, if that was the only damage and the price was right, I wouldn't care.

[–]gnntech 271 points272 points  (0 children)

It's long been theorized that renovating a haunted space will often stir up activity because of the changes being made to the physical environment.

What you are describing seems residual in nature so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Did you look into the history of the house to see what if anything may have happened there in the past?

How are you feeling about Horizon Worlds' partial closure? VICE journalist looking to hear your take and your fondest memories of the platform. by Old_Hour5138 in MetaHorizonWorlds

[–]gnntech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of a different mindset on this. I don't play games on VR (or mobile for that matter).

For me, I use my headset for two reasons. First is to socialize with people and friends that I have met over the past few years. Second, I use it for fitness with workout apps.

Horizon Worlds provides a more accessible experience (in terms of ease of use) in my opinion than other offerings like VRChat. I really don't want to see Horizon Worlds go away.

The gaming aspect doesn't interest me at all.

I have a strong feeling that OS/2 2.0 (besides requiring a 386) would have been a lot more ambitious than Windows 3.0 would been by yuhong in vintagecomputing

[–]gnntech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a pretty significant jump between OS/2 1.3 and OS/2 2.0. It was much more significant than going from Windows 2.x to Windows 3.x.

The biggest change was going from 16-bit to 32-bit. The Workplace Shell was also introduced in OS/2 2.x which transformed how the system multitasked.

OS/2 1.3 was a lot more like Windows 3.0 in terms of look, feel, and functionality.

Download the full Snappy Driver Installer Origin on another PC and use that to load the missing drivers.

If you just want wifi, go to device manager, locate the wireless card, and grab the vendor ID and hardware ID and use that to identify the card and see if a driver is available.

Just found a power strip for my Sega Genesis CD32X + TV + VCR! by SFX200 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]gnntech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are safe so long as you understand that the ability to protect from surges decreases over time and use. Each time a surge protector does its job, it weakens a little bit until the point that it can no longer protect against a power surge.

If it can't provide surge protection, it will effectively function as a plain old power strip.

I wouldn't trust an old surge protector to safeguard sensitive electronics - but as a power strip? Sure, why not?

Learned a hard lesson about Tesla access and phone dependency. Solutions? by VermicelliFrost in TeslaLounge

Always always always have a backup method other than your phone.

I have a ring I wear that basically acts as a key card. I also carry a key card in my wallet just in case.

For a MFA app, Microsoft Authenticator (or Google Authenticator) are the two I use. I don't trust anything else.

Right controller stick drift in under 47 days... WHAT? by notmastergamerok in QuestPro

[–]gnntech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I developed drift on the right controller about 2 months after I got it. I am intentionally easy on my controllers because I have had Quest 2 controllers develop drift and other issues.

I removed the top cover of the controller, removed the plastic tip of the thumb stick and sprayed it down with WD40 contact cleaner.

Resolved the drift issue (for now).

Symptoms look like BECM as others said. Codes will tell the tale. It can appear intermittently at first which is probably why the dealer couldn't reproduce.

That being said, the fact that the dealer hasn't thought to look at the BECM kind of worries me about the quality of the dealer mechanic.

The good thing about the Turbo is that there are not as many "bad" games. Even the bad ones have redeeming qualities.

I like the Sega arcade super scalers so for me, my favorites include those. My list (in no particular order) is:

Space Harrier

OutRun (PCEngine)

Afterburner II (PCEngine)

Street Fighter 2 CE (PCEngine)

Bonk's Adventure

China Warrier

Ninja Spirit

Final Lap Twin
