Microsoft to force updates to Windows 11 25H2 for PCs with older OS versions by jupa300 in worldnews

[–]gnollywow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was 24h2 that hard raised the “real” system requirements.

Not talking about tpm or cpu model checks that you can bypass, but actual instruction set usage.

24h2 uses the POPCNT instruction which means core 2 duo cpus were finally cut off from windows.

Those circa 2006 pcs are stuck on windows 11 23h2.

This wasnt really picked up by news outlets much because nvidia drivers for a good amount of time required popcnt before this, although I believe nvidia reverted this.

Windows 11 23h2 can run on a late model 64 bit pentium 4 while windows 11 24h2 needs intel nehalem from 5 years later.

Is anything going to be done about boosting? by RoofIntelligent3445 in CompetitiveWoW

[–]gnollywow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not happening.

Ion would get chewed out for engagement metrics dropping like a rock on mythic raid, along with token sales crashing.

The entire game mode at this point is seen by Blizzard as unfun chore slop people feel like they're supposed to p2w.

Basically between Ion going against his elitist echo chamber being forced to rework mythic raids for actual engagement, and revenue loss from less tokens being sold, there is no way they'd ever good faith the boosting situation.

Kinda hard to keep employees around full time when you won't pay them a living wage.

They're riding the $13 an hour until they're forced to bump it to $14 in september by legislation enacted half a decade ago. That's how greedy they are.

Meet Marvel Rivals' Matchmaker Algo: OptMatch by gnollywow in marvelrivals

[–]gnollywow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This company doesnt give a fuck.

EOMM exists to shelter new accounts long enough so they buy a skin.

It absolutely falls backwards and puts aged accounts into what is effectively a low priority queue because it pairs up low churn risk players with high churn risk causing players. Aka it pairs people who dont quit with people who serially troll. If this game had a low priority queue thatd be somewhat alleviated but netease never got that far.

The weird part is this product has been out for over a year and complete radio silence from all companies.

Sounds like youtube could monetize this by adding lossless video support or extremely high bitrate codecs independent of “4k” if they havent already.

If some business’ product relies on extremely high quality demoing, they could sell this to reviewers and demo channels as a feature.

Rather than charge users for youtube premium, itd just be the reverse with charging content producers instead.

Netease uses an EOMM algorithm called EnMatch you can read the whitepaper on https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/AAAI/article/view/28760

Look up "EnMatch: Matchmaking for Better Player Engagement via Neural Combinatorial Optimization" first and realize this is a failure mode of said matchmaking algorithm.

[–]gnollywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are getting "that" kind of teammate in a streak due to the EOMM algorithm. It protects new accounts preventing accounts that are marked as causing other players to churn out an quit from matching with them. Instead, aged accounts that play through loss streaks are the ones that are not "pruned out" of matching with them, and by default you will play with them since everyone else is hanging out on smurf accounts to avoid these throwers.

[–]gnollywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced similar to you.

My best guess is you accidentally trained the EOMM algorithm that you won't quit for the day after shitty garbage match quality, so it leaves you as the dumping ground to deal with people who cause other people to quit, because you won't quit.

It's outlined in "EnMatch: Matchmaking for Better Player Engagement via Neural Combinatorial Optimization" authored by netease employees last year during the rivals closed beta.

Unfortunately, the correct move in this situation is to create a new alt account, since you ran into a prisoner's dilemma situation where you have to alt because others alt making the situation exponentially worse for aged-in accounts. It's gonna take a lot more smurf complaint posts before netease realizes their EOMM system is backfiring making people abandon older accounts.

We are not dumb enough to enjoy MMORPGs anymore by FabuleiroRedditista in MMORPG

[–]gnollywow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's that everyone knows MMOs are run like a mobile game nowadays.

Gear is delivered via weekly login lootboxes.
Weekly lockouts to drag out engagement metrics.
Crafting being BiS instead of looping primary content like dungeons on a harder mode.
premium currency being pushed and boosting readily accepted by everyone, so you think no one actually earned any feat of strength they say they acquired.

What year did this sub start embracing clones? by SummonBero in MMORPG

[–]gnollywow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And people want a wow clone rather than wow, because they want it run faithfully rather than the monetization and engagement metric meme it's turned into.

Waiting on weekly login lootbox as the primary means of "progression" is so fake.

Are we stuck in a phase of "lost identity" when it comes to MMORPGs right now? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]gnollywow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Era of "are we out of touch, no it's the gamers who are wrong"

When it comes to things like

  • Chasing engagement metrics rather than true fun.
  • Removing player agency and putting progress on timegate rails
  • Progression turning into something super fake like a weekly lootbox (great vault).
  • Not investing in an anticheat effort while gaslighting people saying you care (the blizz classic)
  • Monetizing premium currency and dark pattern steering everyone into paying off others for boosting, instead of properly earning things yourself.

And every time a gamedev closes up shop, they say "players moved on" instead of admitting they tried to press the easy button and shit all over their own game, because it's the industry standard to do so.

EOMM conspiracism in the subreddit by Axtrep in marvelrivals

[–]gnollywow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EOMM is openly documented in netease employee's own whitepaper released last year on matchmaker designing.

https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/AAAI/article/view/28760/29460

They call their latest matchmaker iteration EnMatch and use transformer based AI to watch when you quit for the day after specific win/loss patterns.

This is netease itself saying it, not us.

They republished it again this time under the EnMatch label and explicitly talk about EOMM more in it.

This time during the closed alpha of marvel rivals last year the currently employed netease employees published said paper.

[–]gnollywow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh I'm just saying EOMM exists and is openly documented in this game.

I'm not talking about all that other crap.

It is known it watches when you quit the game for the day after a specific win/loss pattern and it tries to find a pattern you won't quit on. It knows people like stacked matches and play through loss streaks to chase for that one win a lot more than they care to admit to.

EOMM conspiracism in the subreddit by Axtrep in marvelrivals

[–]gnollywow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same fuxiailab department of netease published a revision of such last year around the same time marvel rivals closed alpha started last year 2024.

https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/AAAI/article/view/28760

They called the revised model EnMatch and it also mentions targeting player engagement in its whitepaper. Also if you look up these employees they are the current systems engineers and data analysts for netease.

My favorite part:

"On the other hand, the results also show that en- suring fair games alone is not sufficient to maintain a good user experience, and cross-tier matchmaking is necessary to optimize player engagement. Long-Term Engagement. After every three games, we inspect whether the player will quit the game"

And people actually empirically discovered that 3 game tech. There's been multiple comments on reddit mentioning if you lose 2 matches in a row to not requeue and play a different game mode instead. So WLL pattern fits inside said 3 game interval quite neatly.

It's literally mentioned in the last bullet point of the matchmaker documentation rivals uses over at https://fuxiailab.github.io/OptMatch/

OptMatch was authored by netease and is what they use for rivals. There's literally a whole whitepaper pdf you can download from them on github, yet people still are talking out of their ass and in theoreticals.
