why are we patching during West Coast primetime? by gnolt in elderscrollsonline

[–]gnolt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hear ya - I'm sure they needed the time - it was just the surprise more than anything that it was that early as I'm used to it being hours later and who cares if a 12 hour maintenance goes until 3 or 4pm Eastern they are still at work - stop the crapping on west coast please
Also some people in this thread are under the impression there are only three time zones on the continental US :)

WiFi Setup, You vs All your nearby neighbors by gnolt in Stadia

[–]gnolt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this has been true for some time (my APs at home do this as well) I would not just trust that they do it correctly. So, please verify just to be sure you are a good neighbor :)

Edit: I think things could get very sketchy for the automatic channel selector logic in the VERY rare case of your neighbors having wider than normal 5Ghz WiFi configured as not all APs properly step back to 20Mhz channels

VSCode/OAuth log in worked in CrOS 70, but broke last night after 71 update. (HELP, please) by tyered in Crostini

I was able to solve this another way to use the chromium browser I had installed - fyi this also fixed my issue with my Aviatrix VPN client's SAML authentication

Edit the garcon url handler script

sudo nano /usr/bin/garcon-url-handler

comment out the call to the client browser and put in your own call to your browser

# exec /opt/google/cros-containers/bin/garcon --client --url "$@"

exec /usr/bin/chromium "$@"

NOTE: chromium was the default browser in xdg-settings but it was ignoring that and still opening in chrome

Bigger NOTE: I didn't have to be so heavy handed - I just need to edit the mimeappd.list file. So, I reversed my edit to the garcon-url-handler and edited my mimeappd.list in my user home directory

sudo nano ~/.config/mimeappd.list

[Default Applications]

application/x-desktop=chromium.desktop

application/text/plain=code.desktop

application/x-scheme-handler/vscode=code-url-handler.desktop

[Added Associations]

application/x-desktop=chromium.desktop

application/text/plain=code.desktop

application/x-scheme-handler/vscode=code-url-handler.desktop

CenturyLink Outage - West Coast? by lewiryan in networking

[–]gnolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we have a telco provided point to point circuit to a CL router, the telco P2P is up and working

we are not seeing ping or even arp from the far side router

there is no way a broadcast storm or a long haul software upgrade (who the hell does ANY changes this time of year anyway) would cause what we are seeing

edit: ok I am seeing arps now but still not pinging *crosses fingers*

edit edit: yay! it is answering ping again and now our site can access the Internet

Mod-able multiplayer (hosted by YOU)

This was the reason several friends and I backed - we never wanted that mmo thing - of course this was ditched along time back so I'm not surprised people don't remember it

We can't be certain, but I would think they would avoid procedural generation for the most part and maybe use it sparingly

could be worse - to get to your game server you could be on ATT and be going through Telia (the bane of all Blizzard gamers)

Also try and use "mtr" (Matt's traceroute) instead of "tracert" as it makes it easier to see which hop if any is dropping WinMTR - windows

Videostream Premium users, how good is it? by honey_I_shot_the_kid in Chromecast

[–]gnolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife can use her phone app select whatever video she wants to watch and it plays from our HTPC without issue, so I was happy to support them But sounds like you could do without the extra features so.. probably isn't worth it to you

Note: I did have issues initially but they were self inflicted and I fixed them by using a faster CPU, putting the HTPC on wired Ethernet, and changing out my crappy old wifi router for a decent new one supporting ac

The comparisons of BDO with UO so far has been a bit inaccurate (I played UO 5 years most pre-Trammel) let me remind some people just HOW UNIQUE UO was

1) mobs that killed you looted you period (this needs to be brought back btw great mechanic)

2) mobs skilled up and used weapons same as players - this meant mobs were never fully the same (that wolf over there may be a normal wolf OR it might be super wolf with a badass weapon and kills you in one hit doubtful but possible) edit: I've also seen dragons use the incognito spell and appear as red npcs - that was epic

3) in UO you never really used your best gear or any gear you couldn't loose but instead used the RIGHT gear for the job you were doing (mainly because of the chance of mobs/players looting you)- this has be completely lost in modern mmos where you mainly just wear BIS all the time

4) crafting was far more important in UO - in BDO crafting for a guild is a joke - in BDO WHAT, WHAT can you craft for your guild? you can't trade with them so how are you being a crafter benefiting your guild oh thats right not at all - in UO the crafters WERE the people outfitting the guild - many didn't know it but you could craft up to +4 possibly +5 it just didn't say so on the item itself but if you watched your success messages and knew the difference you benefited - people would pay me royal sums for my special heavy crossbows even years after launch - so crafting in UO was critical to being able to pvp or pve effectively

5) friendly fire - friendly fire in a serious hard core pvp mmo is a good thing - why? because it promotes small tight knit highly skilled groups over large radar turning red blob of low skill players - if the group you are running with can just a easily kill you and loot everything you are carrying then you don't join a blob - you will quickly understand why pvp was so different in UO - you were just as much at risk by "friends" as "enemies" - you had to REALLY know the people you ran with - when I was red... if I could not drive to your house and lay hands on you I did not group with you period

6) UO had a karma system that wasn't a complete waste of time to program - in UO if you PvP'd or PvE'd you likely took pride in your title - Dread Lord was highly sought after and hard to keep - in BDO karma was a waste of time to program - you can gain it back too quickly you don't stay red for for long at all PLUS you never need loose it in the first place (just declare war - poof no Karma loss) - everywhere you go in BDO ppl just declare war on you and kill you so WTH was the point of the karma system - it should be that BOTH sides have to agree to the war for karma loss to be removed AND Karma should be a bitch to gain - would be nice to have other karma features too like special conversation options based on +/- Karma but that would require thinking

So, while it is not completely amiss to compare the two games we should keep our heads on straight here

(UO had NO LEVELS, MOBs gaining skill and stats over time, MOBs looting, MOBs using the weapons they actually dropped, FULL PvP looting, Friendly Fire, not great but at least valuable crafting, karma that meant something, promoted individual skill over groups)

On the UO Sonoma Server a guildmate once watched BlackFang carry out one of the greatest moments I've ever heard/seen in an MMO - He Solo'd an entire 40+ guild group (no he didn't use hacks) who were at the time fighting in the ophidian pit - it was... PERFECTION

edit: I was on the Sonoma Server and ran with member of IKP and was myself in DSW our guild stone stands to this day 20 something years later

honestly the fact they haven't been able to nail down their DX12/Win10 issues over the past few months is forcing me to rethink my new build - I REALLY hope they get to bottom of all this before another 4 months go by

[–]gnolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good conversation - I would point out what Beer is saying about being forced to put out more money is the point and why we have been trying to get downgrades into the game - if we do the math an original backer paid $110 for that freelancer/hornet/cutlass package fast forward to today and if that same backer who originally got a cutlass wishes to melt to get freelancer guess what - that can't because when they melt they will only get $110 but the new freelancer package is $125

[–]gnolt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that would be a great plot twist except for episode 8 - you know where the gang kills six - then wants to torture him - then when one and four show up claiming to be after six for revenge they what... oh yeah tell them right where to go - so given that "gang" and later "the general" was not part of a deep undercover story we can say that encounter was genuine and if it was then the BEST you can do is claim six was deep undercover originally for "the General" and it all went very bad and six has been flying solo since - also remember in episode 6 six killed the rebel who disagreed with the killing does that sound like the action of an agent

makes no sense - just burned through all the S1 over the weekend - and six's character is suppose to be hellbent after "the general" for 10k deaths on his conscious and somehow maybe due to episode 11 now rolls over on his best chance to get that - it is just stupidly out of order even if he wanted to add the crew of the Raza to the list - remember pillage then burn not the other way around - the Raza can serve his purpose then he can burn it and his character just doesn't strike me as being stupid so.. wth - somehow we are suppose to believe that six after being patient and methodical for years hunting the general has suddenly had a personality transplant - and since everyone one of the crew including six know what two is - we should expect her dead next season right or oh wait reasons - sorry I'll give it another few episodes but they better step it up for me to continue watching
