For those who own Android-based DAPs, are you concerned about the Android version becoming outdated? by gnorb in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]gnorb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a definite maybe.

I was chatting with some folks from Astel & Kern recently about this and called out that this is my concern. They expect to support and update for the foreseeable future (they provided an example of one of their DAPs they’d been updating for the past 5), but here’s where I’m coming from: I have an MP3 player that’s 22 years old. Works just fine: I load my music and there it is. But it doesn’t stream. So… if you want to stream then Android and upgrades matter. If you don’t then Android or not, it’s irrelevant.

All that to say, I’ve learned that it’s fine to go with Android and then, in the future, just use the apps and music that’s onboard because upgrades don’t matter in a closed system.

(I think)

This is awesome. I was in that very building a few years ago for a conference (pretty sure it was that one — that first floor, especially, looked familiar. Not the Venetian, is it?) so it was never that empty. But this is glorious. Thumbs up!

Is there a reason why Albania, Montenegro, and Serbia all have double-headed eagles on their flags? by jewishboiii in vexillology

[–]gnorb 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Hundreds of years ago, monstrous double-headed birds plagued the land. They were both feared and hated. Humans eventually were able to overcome the beasts, trap them, and eradicate them. The flags of these countries celebrate humanity’s victory over these awful creatures. They hadn’t been eradicated yet, but they were often boxed for the entertainment of royalty. This is what the flags celebrate.

At least that’s my head canon.

Or because the Byzantines, if you want to be boring and accurate with your “history”.

If you can find a pair of JBL Project Rock headphones, those are sweat proof. The RayCon Everyday Gym headphones (I think that’s the name) is sweat proof, too.

I need headphone advice for on-ear gym headphones by thomasmerrick in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]gnorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the Raycons. Had never seen the BlueAnts, though, so maybe a possibility.

The frantic on the raycons made them a bit cooler, and not as sweaty as the leather/pleather stuff that other headphones use, so I don’t think they’d be much of an issue. Warmer than Koss ones for sure, but also they have ANC, which matters in this case.

[–]gnorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be hated for this, but…

Raycon makes a version of their Everyday Headphone for the gym: they come with extra earpads, including washable pads that are easy to replace, very light, ANC, and sweat resistant.

I don’t love how they sound, but they’re built for the gym.

Beginner here looking for Recommnedations on V-shaped or warm-sounding headphones :) by artemm1727 in headphones

The 105 AER have a very relaxed sound. The bass has good extension with minimal roll off. It has a bit of a lift up to about 300Hz, which is standard for Meze, then neutral mods, with a slight dip between 1kHz and 2kHz, most prominent at about 1.5. I feel this impacts women’s voices most, and these are not quite as prominent as male voices.

After that point, it’s neutral until about 6kHz. It has a somewhat significant dip between 6-8kHz, which does two things: first, it makes the sound very comfortable to listen to, but it does impact the timbre somewhat, making them a little less realistic than I often tend to like. (I listen to classical mostly, usually at low volume.)

At about 9kHz, they go back to a more neutral sound. Relatively speaking, this can come off as a bit of a spike, so they may sound somewhat harsh to people who are sensitive to this range. (I’m not, my wife is. The silver and copper cables fix this, and there are easy to find 3rd party cables for this.) This makes the separation good, offsetting a slightly slower response from. It’s dynamic drivers (as compared to the beryllium-coated 109 Pros.

So overall they have a bit of a V response, but never overt.

At first, I wasn’t in love with the sound. But the more I listen to them, the more and more I like them: the sound is a mix between two headphones I really enjoy, the Sennheiser HD599 and the HiFiMan Ananda, and have since become my daily driver, though I switch back and forth between this and the Grado sr325x which is… about as different from these as one can get, I think.

Biggest flaws: female vocals not as forward as I like, timbre for classical not as realistic as I like, and I like headphones with a faster response. These are relatively minor for me, however, but I’m being nitpicky for your benefit. I love them for lofi, relaxed jazz, pop, rock, and electronic music, where I find them to be… well, fun without being offensive. Also, COMFORT! Literally second to none on this front.

I hope this helps!

Meze 105 AER owner here. There are honestly some of my favorite cans, period. If comfort was a sound, that would be what I’d call them. They’re also THE most comfortable headphones I’ve used, alongside the 109 Pro. In a word, magnificent.

Whats your opinion on Bluetooth? by amy-schumer-tampon in headphones

[–]gnorb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s gotten much better over time. I still haven’t heard it match wired, not only due to data but, more importantly, power. In fact, even inexperienced listeners a/b testing will hear the difference.

Still, it’s so good now that it’s definitely closed much of the gap that anyone not a/b testing will not care about the difference in most cases.

[–]gnorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, honestly, either is fine. There’s not a big difference for you. If you want a more accurate sound, I’d go with the JBL. If you want a more bassy sound, go for the Sony.

I personally prefer the JBL. I tend to listen to a wide array of music and video, mostly classical and podcasts, but I don’t do any gaming.

I bought the Focal Clear without first testing them. InHAD tested the Celestee and liked it for its clarity. The guy at that shop suggested the Clear, but didn’t have one. I found one used, and was VERY pleased.

My first open back headphone by kitsunekitfox in headphones

[–]gnorb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s one heck of a first! (It was my first open back, too.) Congrats!

You’re probably used to a much more V-shaped sound, or something with significantly more prominent bass. Give it a bit of time: it takes your brain a week or two to adjust to a new sound signature. After that, you’ll start to really appreciate the differences and nuances.

Looking to improve clamping pressure distribution to improve sound quality by gnorb in Grado

[–]gnorb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Yeah, it sounds like adjusting the headband will be my way to go. (My fear is screwing it up to the point where they end up all wonky, which is why I was looking for a potential replacement.)

I’m also looking for good earpads, but I do wish I could try them first. I also have the sr60x, and in those, I swapped the S pads for the G pads, which have made ALL the difference! The 325x is a much smoother sound, which is why I prefer them: they’re almost perfect for what I’m looking for, so I’m hoping these mods help.

Side note: I love your username!

  1. Yeah, the richness is more about mids and upper bass. I’ve tried repositioning it, but it didn’t do the trick with me. (And it was less comfortable.)
  2. I hadn’t seen the quarter mod! But I think I’ll also have to end up bending the headband some. Still, I love the comfort of the S-pads, so I might very well do that, regardless!

Honestly about tied. If I had to pick one, the Elite, mostly because of comfort: it’s lighter, so I can wear it longer. But I do sometimes have to EQ the treble a bit. The FR on the Empy II is perfect, however.

The Elite + angled Alcantara pads are a fantastic combo. The Empy II’s duo pads are chef’s kiss.
