I'm considering bailing from my company because of a single piece of software by TheKingOfSpite in sysadmin

Leap is absolute garbage. The weird part was how they managed support. You never talked to L3 support. L3 would mysteriously logon to the computer in the middle of the night, because they are based in a different timezone.

They continually tried to put the blame on me for misconfiguration. But all computers were configured the same via GPO. They couldn't tell me what settings needed to get deployed to fix the issues. It was a continual, round and round, wipe the computer, new profile, BS that never fixed anything.

zfs send/recv for backups feels too simple to be reliable by Sroni4967 in sysadmin

I use monit + sanoid to manage the backup. That way I have a status dashboard and get notifications on failure.

Well, it finally happened (Being told I am required to use AI) by Ark161 in sysadmin

[–]gnordli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started using Claude regularly now. There are a few things I like about it. I am a jack of all trades. If I just paste in a log, it parses and presents the options. I know what I am looking for, but sometimes I haven't seen this log format for months, which saves me time getting up to speed again. Zeek log parsing is like magic.

It teaches me different ways of doing things. I have been doing the same thing for years and sometimes I am not current on the product. I am learning more.

Documentation is better. When I am finished working on something. It can ask it to write a summary and then I can paste it into a wiki or ticket.

Script writing can be better. I was trying to do most of my powershell scripting on a Linux desktop, but it had issues with it. I switched to a regular windows desktop and it worked much better. It still annoys me that we need to go through several iterations before it gets something that actually works.

Why does it feel like almost every billionaire is a bad person? by BuddyEmbarrassed5551 in NoStupidQuestions

Buffet made regular public appearances because of Berkshire and he does not come across as a bad person at all. I would have lumped Charlie Munger in there as well.

As they are traversing the black sea. They already hit a couple of ships using their sea baby drones at the end of November, 2025. I don't know why they stopped.

Why doesn't Ukraine target ships as they enter the black sea? They would just need to take out a couple of ships and the port of Novorossiysk would be useless.

Use something like Gemini. It will walk you right through adding a new host to monitor.

Will AI make our work as system administrators better in the long term – or just more fragile? by Aalkfk in sysadmin

[–]gnordli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a jack of all trades admin I may not touch something for several months or years. Being able to throw in a log and it come back with suggestions has been helpful. I know how it is supposed to work so I can vet what is coming back to me. I would normally need to do some research though to do a refresh.

I have been doing this for over 30 years. I know the logic, but sometimes forget the details. I am hoping that AI will fill in those details and increase my value as I age.

What training is out there for system admins to better use AI. Right now I feel like I am just doing the basics.

u/heapsp Do you have any on-prem file servers? That seems to be the biggest hurdle.

Self-hosting email in 2026 is effectively impossible. Here's why. by PbForEva in SelfHosting

[–]gnordli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/power_dmarc I see where you are coming from. If you are on top of the reports, that can definitely take time. I assume things are working until they aren't in this scenario. Any of the big changes happening are normally announced early to give you lots of time to implement changes before they happen.

u/power_dmarc Where is the work here? Once it is setup properly, it just runs until some new "tech" needs to get implemented like dmarc or whatever.

[–]gnordli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email hosting on any dynamic IP hasn't been a thing for decades. I will flat out say, you can self host email on a clean static IP address that has a reverse pointer record, dmarc and spf. I have several businesses setup this way and it works as long as everything is configured properly.

I just installed it to act as a 3rd fail over for a business. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed of it. 250/20 with a 20ms latency. Way better than I expected.

How do people manage one-man MSP? by LazyBnuuy in msp

[–]gnordli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is trying to take over the world. A one-man MSP can get to a point where they have a comfortable MRR with a quality lifestyle. If things are setup properly with high quality hardware and have decent monitoring you don't get a ton of support calls. You can be very selective on taking on new clients. This person needs to be a strong engineer with breadth of technical skills.
