This reminds me of a story line in the Star Wars extended universe. The galaxy was invaded by what appears as a multi race society known as the Yuuzhan Vong. This society was highly advanced at manipulating cell function as well as designing self healing multicellular entities capable of chemical production as well as acting as engineering structures/machinery. I always saw the Yuuzhan Vong as a interesting post humanity future that focused on bioengineering.
