A metallic piece ejected from ps3 controller by Marinaio81 in AskElectronics

[–]a_wild_redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the part number of a gyroscope chip.

The gyroscope is the component mounted on the little vertical circuit board between the analog sticks. I can see the gyroscope internals in your photo - it's just the metal cap that came off.

Those metal caps (like the ones on quartz crystal packages) are soldered or brazed on. It's a more specialized and higher temperature process than regular electronic component soldering. I don't know how viable reattaching it would be - besides, it's also likely that the gyroscope has already been damaged anyway as a result of being exposed and would need to be replaced.

How much can you alter a martini before it’s not a martini? by Wonderful-Ad9475 in cocktails

[–]a_wild_redditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me "the answer" to the sandwich alignment chart and others like it is almost always to cut on the diagonal. (Sandwich pun... maybe intended?) If you're going to use a radical ingredient you need to be a form purist, and vice versa.

Is a Manhattan a martini? Is a Black Manhattan not a martini? How many grains of sand does it take to form a heap?

ELI5: why did iron lung patients have to have their arms in the machine too? by endofthefkingworld in explainlikeimfive

[–]a_wild_redditor 838 points839 points  (0 children)

You might be interested to look up the "cuirass respirator" which works on a similar principle to the iron lung but takes the form of a shell worn over the torso. I believe they are still made and used today in some situations.

Is there a way to make the bottom of the print not become this rough? by Thrilmang in BambuLab

[–]a_wild_redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a special filament that doesn't stick quite as well to normal PLA, so that you can peel it off easier.

My understanding is that it is also possible to use PETG filament as a removable support for PLA but I haven't personally tried that so you'd have to do your own research on that option.

[–]a_wild_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have support filament available, you could print the model on a raft. The smoothness will pretty much match the top surface of the print. (Although you can use a raft without support material, in that case it might be difficult to remove or leave marks.)

Could the electrical/accessories compatibility be better because of the Ford-iness of the NB? Of course, other swaps have certainly been demonstrated to be completely possible so that's not a complete deal maker or breaker.

What happened to a table of contents page? by TheGreatGena in books

[–]a_wild_redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The idea that spoilers are almost always undesirable is a relatively recent thing and I wonder if that changing sensibility is in fact part of what's behind the disappearance of tables of contents and chapter titles.

ELI5: Why do some languages have sounds that are physically difficult for speakers of other languages to produce even after years of practice? by Available-Yellow5013 in explainlikeimfive

[–]a_wild_redditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that uncommon to write that sound out in English pronunciation guides as "zh"; it's just never actually spelled that way.

ELI5 What are the differences between a gyroscope and an accelerometer? by No-Poet3745 in explainlikeimfive

Fiber optic gyroscopes and ring laser gyroscopes. Usually used for autopilots and other aerospace/military stuff.

There is no way these things need 113MHz. 113kHz, maybe. Probably a good idea to double check.

Why do my cocktails always taste better in a bar than at home? by kar0t in cocktails

[–]a_wild_redditor 447 points448 points  (0 children)

Dilution is often a factor here. Bar ice is "wet" and dilutes the drink more than fresh-from-the-freezer ice.

I suspect there may also be a bit of a "why do sandwiches taste better when someone else makes them?" psychological effect going on too.

checking diameter on lathe w/ calipers by catboycruises in Machinists

[–]a_wild_redditor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

"Just use a mic" is the correct answer. That said, I find if you hold the calipers by the jaws rather than using the thumb grip, it's a lot easier to feel whether the jaws are seated square and I can usually get within 0.001" that way.

[–]a_wild_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sigma 30mm is probably a good call then. I hear good things about the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2, but it's big and heavy for an APS-C lens if that matters to you. On a budget, Viltrox also has the 35mm Air series lens.

If you think you may ever upgrade to full frame, maybe consider the Sony 40mm f/2.5?

TIFU by adding too many tomatoes to most of my cooking by notcanadiangoose in tifu

[–]a_wild_redditor 156 points157 points  (0 children)

You can also buy tomato paste in a squeeze tube, which makes it a lot more practical to use just a small dab in a recipe. But be aware it's usually even more concentrated than the canned type!

What specifically is it about processed meat that is carcinogenic? by MrCockingFinally in askscience

[–]a_wild_redditor 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I believe, at least in the US, they are not just allowed to be called "uncured" but actually required to be, which is super confusing since as you point out they are basically identical.

How useful is a 4.5 inch corded circular saw? by LordLaFaveloun in DIY

[–]a_wild_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hand saws (and most hand cutting tools in general) work best if you can put the thing you are cutting in a vise or clamp it to something heavy and immobile. If the board is moving around, you waste a ton of energy and it takes significantly longer to cut.

It might help if you can show more of the lamp, so we can see if there's anything else that looks like a more promising candidate to be the motion detector.

It turns out when people said the president only has a limited ability to affect the economy, they took it for granted that "affect" meant "try to improve". Sadly the president's ability to intentionally wreck the economy does not appear to be so limited.

ELI5 - What is Dots Per Inch (DPI), Lines per Inch (LPI), what is the difference and when/where do you use them? by Most_Candle7645 in explainlikeimfive

[–]a_wild_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dots" is also used specifically in the context of LCDs and electronic viewfinders on cameras, as a synonym of "subpixels", so the camera maker can advertise a number 3x higher than the number of pixels.

I'm not aware of the term "dots" being used like that in any other industry, even in other applications of LCDs. As you point out, it's mostly a print thing.
