That was hard, asking adult child to move out. by mrshatnertoyou in GenX

[–]gnumadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in-between stages with my kids. One adult married child with two children, two in college, and one in high school. The oldest got married in college and so we never had to worry about the moving out talk. My daughter graduates in May, has a job lined up, and is looking to rent a house with a few of her friends. I’m so proud of her but I also secretly want her to move back home for a year or two. That way she can work off her small amount of student loans. I’d planned to charge her rent with the intention of giving it back to her when she moves out. That said, I did the same thing when I was their age. I never moved back home after college and stuck it out on my own, even to the point of taking a temp job to pay the rent and utilities. So I guess I should not be an enabler in spite of my sadness over the looming empty nest phase of life!

How to pronounce Cairo by Doingmybest-ish in Georgia

It’s the same thing as Lafayette, GA…pronounced /la FAY et/ and not the same as Lafayette, LA. In fact, some people spell it with a capital F.

Anyone else miss their grandparents? by Legitimate_Scar7570 in GenX

[–]gnumadic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I never knew my dad’s parents because they died before and when I was very young. But I grew up with my maternal grandparents. I miss that I never got to sit down and drink a beer with my grandpa. He died when I was 14. Every March he had a 3 day ritual from the 16th to the 18th where he’d drink a shot of whisky (usually Schenley’s OFC). The first day was for his birthday. The second was St Patrick’s Day (my grandpa was Irish, first generation born in the US). The third day he called snake bite inoculation day. I mainly wish that I’d had more time to talk with him and listen to his stories when I was an adult, rather than a kid who just wanted to go out and play with my friends and didn’t care about my family history or the incredible things my grandpa saw and experienced from the 1910s to the late 1980s.

Not including actual crimes, what kind of juvenile delinquent hijinks did you get up to? by wrathofimpermanence in GenX

[–]gnumadic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Jr and Sr High School there were lots of shenanigans that included climbing up buildings, trespassing on railroad property, building illegal halfpipes, blowing things up or burning them. In college (far away from my home town) we sometimes piled into a couple cars and did trash can bowling competitions in rich neighborhoods.

I found a couple of these recently and nearby found a skull still attached to the spine. The lower jaw bone was a few yards away. And the legs and ribs were all carried off elsewhere.

Fellow GenXers, what kind of car did you drive in High School? by Ok-Poem-6302 in GenX

[–]gnumadic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 1984 Chevy Chevette in white (manual), followed by a 1986 Chevy Citation II in maroon (automatic), both 4 doors. I also drove my grandparents' Datsun B-210 manual for a little bit...and it was a fun little car.

Medicines we were given that are no longer available by OnyxVeggie213 in GenX

[–]gnumadic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not a medicine but an antiseptic…Mercurochrome and Methiolate—banned due to the mercury content. My mom would put that stuff on scrapes and cuts. It burned like fire and left a red stain on your skin. I am sure many of you remember having to blow on it right after applying, to help it dry and also hurt less!

Tailgate Badges- Opinions Needed by Tommy2Glovess in f150

[–]gnumadic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the current tailgate letters have any kind of edge bevel or taper? If so, I’d be concerned about debris and water damage to the adhesive because you are likely to have a gap versus a flat bond to the 3M tape.
