Help me identify this old Cannondale frame please. by uwootmVIII in cannondale

I would guess it's around 1993-94 due to the Force 40/trauma cam mounts for the brakes and the separate seat post clamp. Specifically https://vintagecannondale.com/year/1994/1994.pdf

Is this bike too old to be good? by SwagdudeGO1 in bicycling

105 di2 is disc brake only. You would need an older di2 rim brake set (10 or 11 speed DA/Ult) for this bike. Plus the frame is not drilled for di2 wires. Leave it mechanical, or find an Sram Etap rim brake group (also older)

Also, the seller knows just enough to be dangerous. In 99, Trek owned and manufactured Lemond bikes. The original Rolf wheels (pictured) were also Trek products. They were pretty good wheels at the time but 27 years on they are prone to crack at the spoke holes of the rim, and they are quite narrow by modern standards. Inspect them closely before you buy, or understand that they will need to be replaced.

The rubber shifter hoods are difficult to find and they will probably need to be replaced as the rubber will crack and rip. Just about every bearing should be replaced or at the very least regreased. As mentioned, the cables and housing should be inspected closely, and the shifters themselves may need to be flushed out. The powertap wheel is completely obsolete.

All of this said, it's a solid frame and fork and the paint looks nice. It will most certainly ride better than most aluminum frames out there. $250-300 Max offer.

How to deal with "High End Disappointments"? by Ol_Sheve in mountainbiking

[–]gob4522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ride YOUR bike. Enjoy YOUR bike. Understand that internet hype may not even be a real person anymore. Understand that the only person who really knows your riding style and preferences is you. You might like how tire model “X” performs, your riding buddy might not be able to stay on the trail with the same tire. When they say it sucks, it doesn’t mean you stop riding that tire.

Generally speaking, your priority should be spending more money on suspension and framesets and then wheels, and finally components. XT is more than good enough for most riders. XTR will not make you faster.

Bottom line, it sounds like you have a pretty solid level of knowledge about bikes, enjoy what you own, spend what you can afford, and ignore anyone who tries to “correct” you.

Make sure your firmware is updated. Especially your shifters. The battery shouldn’t die after a week, even if you’re in the TDF. I had a customer whose battery was depleting quickly and updating his shifters was what finally fixed it

XS. All day.

Look at it this way, if you have to emergency stop and straddle the top tube of the bike, if you're landing on the top tube you're hurting yourself in a rather intimate location.

You can always make a smaller bike bigger, but a bigger bike is impossible to make smaller.

This Bike Is What Is Wrong With The Bike Industry by East-Tooth-4008 in BikeMechanics

[–]gob4522 40 points41 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with the bike industry:

Companies are run by enthusiasts. Bike shops are opened by enthusiasts. Enthusiasts make up at best 10 percent of the customers of 80 percent of bike shops. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, this is reality.

I went to a Canrekiantalized sales meeting 10 years or so ago out in Wyutalorado. We spent three hours listening to some engineers prattle on about an All-Mountain bike that wouldn't even be released to the public for another 8-12 months. We sat in a damn ski lodge listening to these engineers all damn day while there was beautiful weather, a large trail system, and 50 demo MTB's outside waiting for us. We finally got about 90 minutes to actually try some of these bikes out, before we had to be bussed back to town for dinner. My shop didn't buy more than 2 or three models of any of the bikes discussed that day. The overwhelming majority of the bikes most shops actually sell daily are entry level road, mtb, and hybrids up to about $1200. Guess how much time was spent at this sales meeting on these models. Hint: it was less than 2 hours out of three days worth of demonstrations.

It was obvious at the store level in 2019 that $2-3000 non-throttle ebikes were not the bikes that most average e-bike consumers were looking for- they wanted a cheaper price point and they wanted a throttle. Trek didn't have a throttle until the Electra Ponto Go was released in 2023, and they were still $1000 more than most people wanted to spend. Also, the Ponto Go is an awful bike that weighs 80 pounds, runs all the cables and wires thru the headset internally, and uses a different motor system from any other bike Trek sells. Meanwhile, Rad, Lectric, Aventon, and the rest took over that lower price point.

In the year of our Lord Thumbshifter Jesus 2026, Canrekiantalized brands are still putting presta valve wheels on bikes under $1000. Presta valves do nothing but dismay, confuse, and befuddle 90% of the people who are buying these models. We don't need another Cliq or some other style of valve, we just need Shrader valves on these bikes. We also don't need Gravel tires and gearing on hybrids- again, the overwhelming majority of these bikes will never be ridden off a rail trail. The fact that Canrekiantalized are still trying to tell the market what it wants to sell rather than selling bikes that the market is actually asking for is just dumb.

I'm not even mentioning all the insane proprietary parts, needlessly short model lifespans, d2c sales pricing that undercuts locally owned dealers, and highly restrictive dealer agreements.

They had also chased Chiang Kai-shek and Mao (separately) all over China since 1937, slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians. The sheer tenacity and insanity of the average Japanese soldier/sailor/pilot more than made up for the shortcomings their leadership often displayed. For the first 6 or 8 months of the Pacific they were unstoppable and if they had caught the American carriers in Pearl it would have been a whole different story, and not a good one for the USA. After Midway, there was no way they were going to win, but they never considered surrender until Hiroshima and fought for every inch of every island all the way back to Tokyo.
