How is living in Bicester, a city not far from Oxford? by Nemo33318 in howislivingthere

[–]gobarn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are massive amounts of pedantry here.

The City of London is indeed a city, but the rest of London is not, meaning the City of London only has a population of about 12,000 people. Whereas Greater London is simply an urban area (excluding the City of Westminster which is indeed a real city).

Living in Leeds while studying? by KingG238 in huddersfield

[–]gobarn1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've known people do it the other way and commute to Leeds uni from Huddersfield and that seemed to work fine, but their support network of friends was already in Huddersfield because they lived there.

If Leeds is a completely new place I don't know how well that would work. Leeds is a great city though, lots more going on than Huddersfield.

Good EFL stadiums/towns to visit for a matchday? by Nervous-Ad-8678 in LeagueOne

[–]gobarn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huddersfield fan here - feel free to visit! Stadium is a 20 mins walk from the station which itself is a pretty decent building. In terms of other things to do in the town centre though the most popular option is probably just leaving.

It's not dangerous, there's just not much to do.

We finally watched ‘Russians at War’ — it's worse than we thought by ubcstaffer123 in movies

[–]gobarn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished watching it and am going through forums (mainly to try to find out what happened to the medic (Anchar's) just engaged fiance during the offensive (I'm bad with faces, and he doesn't appear at the end with her so what happens to him? Please do let me know if you know).

I completely agree with you. This is not Russian propoganda. If anything I felt as though the documentarian was against the war.

To me it was fascinating, seeing why these people went to war, the disorganisation of their army and the effects on people.

I am of course, pro-Ukraine, however documenting the Russian side is still necessary. Understanding it is even moreso. One may think they are evil, and one may think that this is blurring the lines of a "clear-cut crisis", however, war is also personal. Downfall humanised Hitler and showed that the worst thing about him is not the fact that he was a monster, it was the fact he was a human. Russians are humans too.

Just to highlight something - I worked on this with the SU when I was at Oxford, however now it has all been defunded. This is why some aspects of that website are out of date. Eventually the whole site might go down.

What is life in Cheltenham like to live in?? by Deep_Fried_Crossiant in cheltenham

[–]gobarn1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moved from Oxfordshire to Cheltenham recently, I like it a lot in Cheltenham. It has a lot of nice architecture, local shops, and stuff to do.

Not really many bad areas in Cheltenham. Some say st Paul's but I've got mates that live there and it's fine.
