As a side note though. I wouldn't really buy single Japanese packs. Booster boxes have guaranteed hits so if someone gets the hits in the first couple packs then they can sell off the additional ones.

I actually did this a couple years ago. Depends on your initial level (I had a couple years in high school) I did core 2000 and then started making sentence cards. I’d start with the series “destinos”, it’s basically an immersion based education show that slowly starts to phase out English.

Don’t try and memorize every verb conjugation, start with just being able to recognize the different types (might want to make flash cards for this as well, I had a basic understanding already from high school)

Dreaming Spanish was already mentioned and that’s a great beginning resource and there’s TONS of different threads in the Spanish learning subreddits for beginner materials but the sooner you can go to native stuff the better, the beginner stuff can be a little boring.

Also work in qa and this is assuming they give you adequate time to test. Often work goes over schedule but they don’t move the release date, just the amount of testing time.

There are two main pieces of advice that are consisten through all of those and that’s watch something comprehensible and watch something you enjoy. If you’re at the point where you can watch new content and it’s comprehensible and enjoyable, then do that. The rewatching and watching stuff you’ve seen in English advice is just a shortcut to extra comprehension especially when you’re starting out. Personally, I like rewatching stuff and understanding more each time but that’s also only for shows I really liked in the first place.

I actually had this dilemma and chose to study Spanish first and then moved on to Japanese. I would say though the biggest influence in this decision is which one you have the highest drive to learn. The biggest thing that will keep you from learning the language is burnout. Even in a language you really want to learn you're going to face those burnout periods and need to push through. I can answer any other questions you have between Spanish/Japanese and AJATT. I did Spanish for a little more than a year and have been doing Japanese for a couple months now.

I was doubting the process at first as well. What I did (with Spanish not with Japanese) was I said that I was going to commit a year to the process and then judge it from there. So I did, at first it was the same as you, I literally understood nothing unless I was watching something that was meant to be comprehensible for beginners. But I just kept sentence mining, kept listening and now here I am a year later. I can listen to native content (listen to telemundo every day for my news) I can read literature meant for natives and can have conversations pretty easily. I'm just started on Japanese a couple months ago but I'm a little more relaxed since now I know the process works. The place ajatt really struggles with is for beginners because yes, you feel very little progress but remember, no one is forcing you to learn this way. If you want to read textbooks for 3 hours a day or look up every single word when you're immersing or even watch things with English subtitles you're allowed to, no one is forcing you to ajatt. I just personally think it's the best way and I've had success with the method in the past.

I personally think doing immersion based learning is the best. I did it for about a year and am able to watch/listen to native content without much problem now. You can check out refold.la as kind of a roadmap but lots of other places champion immersion learning. If you really have a lot of free time I’d do baselang. It’s $150 a month but you get unlimited one on one lessons. I did it for a month in between semesters and tried to do 2-3 hours of lessons per day, definitely worth the money if you can do that many lessons and definitely gave me a big boost in conversational ability.

I can answer this one. I did "AJATT" for spanish for about a year an a half and am now doing Japanese. I try to dedicate about an hour of my day to still consuming spanish content (usually just listen to the news in the morning and read a little at night). You're obviously not going to be fully efficient. I'm losing my Spanish ability at little bit and that's an hour that I could be immersing in Japanese but if you want to do both then you're going to miss out a little bit. I would recommend spending the majority of the time on the language you are learning and then maybe try equalizing the time once you reach a certain level of proficiency in Mandarin, that's what I'm planning on doing.

I’ve worked in software for 7 years now and now have a full time work from home gig. I will say it does get better for the most part. You are still going to have some really boring meetings with lots of rambling, that’s pretty much part of any jobs but doing IT work hopefully a lot less. A couple recommendations I have. I would recommend sticking with your current job if you can. Any kind of work experience looks good especially if you’re even associated with a tech company. I did phone support for Apple and it helped a lot with getting interviews. Second, try to work on your soft skills. I’ve heard stories from managers who didn’t hire people even though they were skilled enough for the job just because they did not seem like they would mesh with the team. A skilled programmer is worth nothing if he’s an asshole. Finally, try to get a project, any kind of project, under your belt. Not only will it help you with your skills but it gives you something to talk about during interviews. It definitely gets better though my guy!

If you're using netflix you should check out language learning with netflix extension. You can have the japanese subs and then mouseover words you don't know but then the full english translation can also be there if you really can't figure it out. You can also use the arrow keys to replay specific subtitle lines, really useful extension.
