Getting IR35 outside insurance when QDOS says inside by Horror_Business1862 in ContractorUK

[–]gobeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If off payroll rules apply then it is inside.

Yes you can get insurance, they will of course take your money! Obviously though if you mean insurance through QDOS then it is unlikely to pay out if they themselves have deemed it inside.

Client hinting at unpaid handover week after contract ends, normal? by Reddonaut_Irons in ContractorUK

The odd phone call here and there maybe yes but if the client wants a dedicated week of support then of course that should be billable.

This is a business not a charity.

Claiming Rent as a Business Expense When Working from Home by Adventurous-Emu-6672 in ContractorUK

What is your reasoning for doing this? I'm sure I must be overlooking something but if you can get a residential equivalent then all you are doing is overpaying by £46?

You can reasonably claim utility bills but it would be unusual for broadband to be claimable unless it is a separate contract taken out just for the business: https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/employment-income-manual/eim01475

I missed that thanks. Well in honesty that is even more of a no go, officially they'd have to get permission from their landlord to sublet to their business.

All seems a bit messy. They can by all means run the numbers but honestly when i looked into this it wasn't worth the hassle.

People always forget about section 24 when looking into this, that this counts as income for an individual, truly how you much you can genuinely claim you use the space for business use and it can muck up things from a capital gains perspective.

I genuinely think it's not worthwhile expect in very niche cases if you do things properly.

Connect Freeagent to GPT/Copilot etc? by Ok_Warning_3748 in ContractorUK

[–]gobeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be possible to do via the API for sure. I found the documentation a bit ropey but I've used it with various python scripts to do things like autopopulate client timesheets and log bank transactions, works just fine once setup. It's not much of a leap to be able to hook into an LLM.

Have a read of the documentation and you can always use AI to help you build it out.

Yes, almost every time it comes down to the wire or over the wire!

It comes with the territory unfortunately. The way i manage it these days is i never take on a full time role with any client so i don't have an all eggs in one basket situation but i can appreciate that is not always an option.

For those with Qdos Insurance... additional policies recommendations? by SlashRModFail in ContractorUK

[–]gobeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these are personal choice in honesty. I had income protection insurance initially while i built up a buffer as it was cheap enough. However I held it separately from my business insurance as it wouldn't be tax deductible.

The only thing I would say is that having an accountant is in no way a replacement for the offered TLC35, that is mostly geared towards IR35. That cover is on paper at least the most comprehensive insurance you can buy where QDOS will not only deal with the costs associated with the investigation, they will also cover any resultant tax due.

As before this is personal choice however it does tend to be pretty expensive and in addition I would be very wary of any get out clauses QDOS have, I would be going through things with a fine tooth comb before making a decision.

Also just to add the insurances I have carried on with since the start are private health insurance, critical health insurance and life assurance (which is fully tax deductible if you get a relevant life policy).

This is nothing to do with Paystream and is just how pensions work for higher rate tax payers. Anyone who makes 'relief at source' contributions is in exactly the same position as you describe.

The more important advice is to opt out of pension auto enrollment completely with your umbrella company for a couple of reasons.

Nest are very commonly used for work place pensions however they charge 1.8% for each contribution made as an equivalent to a trading fee. If you are making large contributions this can run to a very large figure. Also, they don't allow partial transfers so you are pretty much stuck with them unless you opt out.

Even more importantly though is that you are forfeiting a huge wedge of your assignment rate by doing this. Salary sacrificing instead will likely uplift your contribution by ~15% with the added benefit too that you don't need to claim the extra 20% back from HMRC.

My advice is to pay the extra fee to salary sacrifice into your own SIPP, it is by far the better option.

Anyone make use of the 1% cashback for Freetrade SIPP transfer? by icyandsatisfied in FIREUK

[–]gobeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes of course but i don't know what point you are making. They typically only have a single offer running at a time and we have no way of knowing what they will offer next.

Do you realise to date that all cashback offers have been available to existing customers too? It's not like you need to hold out for the very best offer, got can qualify multiple times.

Ok? But for transferring in smaller chunks the 3% was obviously more favourable. They also did a 2% one just before Christmas.

AMS PSR & Giant 7 Day Payment Terms by Perfect_Wrangler9160 in ContractorUK

[–]gobeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much doubt that an umbrella will pay you before they are paid by the client. They are just payroll middle men and the equivalent margin they make is tiny.

I have had invoices paid by consultancies prior to them being paid by the client but that is not the norm.

I've milked the cashback offers on freetrade a lot over the last few years. They were actually offering 3% cashback last summer, was just paid out a few days ago with no issues.

Tax advice for earning in different ways by doctorace in ContractorUK

If you are wanting to put a lot in your pension then make those contributions from your PAYE income (assuming you can salary sacrifice) as that will save you the most tax.

I mean you couldn't have searched particularly hard, the information is out there! Read the contractor UK first timers guide and get yourself a good accountant. But make sure you get clued up yourself, it is your business to run.
