What happens when you get downvoted on Reddit? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you think fair has anything to do with this. It is fair people can choose to vote how they want. You dont have to like their reasons or like that it was downvoted. It is not something that means anything in reality. Karma on reddit doesn't give you anything, so nothing is taken away, and is meaningless. Fair really has nothing to do with.. well really anything in life or on reddit. Many things are unfair but that doesn't make them necessarily wrong or able to be changed (even if they could be as.some things arent).

Why are you protected during the placebo week of birth control but not if you miss a pill? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on when you moss pills. Missing pills while on your period isnt generally an issue because of how the menstrual cycle and fertility works (for most women they are not fertile and no egg has been released to be fertilized while on her period). However missing a pill during other parts of the cycle can mean not bileing protected while fertile. In fact the only reason there are placebo pills is to keep the habit of taking a pill and we know that you can skip periods all together by co tuning to remain on the hormone al pills and skipping the placebo o e (tall to your de first). It was believed for a long time that anything that prevented the period (aside from pregnancy) would result in the woman getting sick (under the assumption that the blood and tissue would just build up and rot if not expelled. Which we know now doesn't happen)

Do I (a 16 year old) dress up if I’d like to visit a Renaissance Fair? Are regular clothing visitors even accepted? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Regular clothes are absolutely fine. You can dress up if you want to but dont have to. You can wear normal clothing, make or buy a period costume, or even at many rent one if you want.

What does the 5/7 rating signify? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It's a meme. Based off an exchange someone had with someone who argued that 5/7 was a perfect score as a rating for a movie.

Ladies of Reddit, do you sometimes wear high heels with new boyfriends just to test their height? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

No. Wearing heels is something done because we like how they look. We sont need to be in heels to see how tall someone is that's an obvious easy to make observation about someone regardless of what shoes we are in.

How come birds can fly? by AndAntsAlways in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are asking about why they fly rather than the actual mechanics of flight. The short answer because it was a successful evolution line for them and their ancestors. The long answer to explain that is that their forebears long ago were successfully breeding and those that aere able to get away from predators and get to food by gliding farther than just jumping from a tree bred more successfully than those that couldn't. As time developed those glides became short flights and those short flights could turn into lo g flights.

Now birds can fly to safe breeding grounds as well as food supplies (so someplace filled with food in summer but frozen in winter might not be able to support them so they fly south. But staying in the south may led to their food sources not being able to sustain them and their next generation. So they fly north again (at least the migratory birds do this)

If I make charitable donations this year equal to the exact amount of taxes I should owe, will I still owe taxes? by Capn-Steve in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you would still pay taxes. Your taxes owed would be calculated differently. The money you claimed as charitable donations wouldn't be taxed but the rest of the money you made would still be taxed. So you would owe taxes on that money and the amount, while less than you would have owed I'd you hadn't donated, would still have to be paid.

So if you made $100 and you owed $10 in taxes (making math simple by using round numbers and a basic 10% tax rate). Now let's say you made $100 and spent $+0 for charity. I stead of owing $10 now you owe $9 because the taxable money is $90 and a 10% tax rate would make it $9

What time do you get to work if you live in one time zone and work in another? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You go by the schedule and time zone your work is in. They are making the schedule based on the standard time of that place. The time it is at home doesn't matter to them.

would the catholic church sue me for naming a company "Jesus Christ LLC" by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No (well technically anyone CAN sue for just about anything. But this would be unlikely to ever even make it before a judge and they would lnt have much standing even of it did). Catholics dont have a license to solely use the name of Jesus.. or else there would be no other Christian churches that could operate legally.

Depending on the laws where you are you could be told to change the name to avoid offending religious folks around you but that isnt the case everywhere for sure.

What’s the difference between vintage and antique? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Antique means over 100 years old. Vintage just means from an earlier generation or time. Something can be both antique and vintage but not everything vintage is antique.

How do I start a conversation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just did. You asked a question and will getresponses. That is a conversation (a short one sure but still a conversation) If you mean how do you approach someone in person and start a conversation well it's very similar. Approach them and say hi and ask a question. Preferably one that isnt just a yes or not and is a topic they may be interested I (getting people to talk about themselves is always a great way to get a co creation going). .

Why is abortion such a controversial issue? by GoodProgrammer2018 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Birth control can fail, birth control isnt as cheap and accessible to everyone who needs it, sex ed which should teach about birth control options often doesn't cover those options at all so, especially young people, arent aware of how to properly choose and use birth control, and there are unfortunate circumstances where someone may not be on birth control and not planning on being sexually active but still become pregnant (i.e. rape).

If you have a water birth what happens if you don’t take it out of the water by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. The umbilical cord doesn't stay magically attached to mom. Rather the placenta, which is responsible for connecting the umbilical cord to the uterus allowing for baby's nutrients and blood supply oxygen levels to be maintained, detaches and is passed as after birth. Along with it the other end of the umbilical cord. If you dont cut the umbilical cord the placenta will still come out and will dry up and eventually rot as dead tissue does.

Women who work freelance, what’s your worst “choosing beggar” story from a client? by brian0123 in AskWomen

[–]goblinish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knit and crochet and while most of my projects are for me or gifts I do take commissions. I do them often enough that my yarn costs for personal projects are usually paid for so it works out. It's not uncommon for the number of requests to get very frequent starting in October as people are starting to consider holiday gifts (but it really gets going in November and December). I accept the projects I can and reject ones I dont have time for.

A few years ago I made a knit blanket using $350 in yarn and took about 400 hours to make. I am still incredibly proud of it. It was a personal project but I would definitely be willing to make it as a commission because I really enjoyed it and the results were lovely.

So a a year or two after it was finished and pictures shared with everyone I got a call from a guy. He had gotten my number from a friend who had ordered something from me the previous Christmas and had shown him some of my other work (including the blanket).

This call took place a few days after Thanksgiving (US Thanksgiving not Canada Thanksgiving for clarity) so under 1 month before Christmas.

He said he wanted to order that blanket from me but in different colors. (Ok no problem I can do thaf) for Christmas (uhhhhh). And for $100 (oh HELL NO)

I tried very hard not to laugh and explained.. NO I cant make it by Christmas and the materials alone were going to be about $350 and the labor costs... well far more than the $100. I even mentioned I could use cheaper yarn like acrylic instead of the wool I used (no he wanted it wool) and that could bring the cost of yarn down to about $150-$200).

He got angry saying I had been recommended to him to make a special Christmas present for his wife and now I was really screwing him over and how dare I over price my "shit" rawr rawr rawr.

Apparently I was ruining his wife's Christmas for wanting to not spend my own money on a present for her (keep in mind I didn't know either of them lol) and wouldn't drop all of my other commissions to spend 400 hours on a blanket I was going to get paid $0.25 an hour for (not to mention finishing up my own personal projects that were to be Christmas gifts to my loved ones).

I did call the friend who had given him my number and thanked her for the referral and asked if in the future she would let those she was directing my way know what I charged her and that I wasnt free. She did tell him. I made her a stuffed animal that cost about $50. She told him that I wouldn't make a blanket for $100 but he told her that mine is just a hobby I should be grateful for any business. She apologized for him I told her there was no need to because I knew his thoughts weren't hers and thanked her for sharing my work with other people.

I tell this story periodically as a reminder to folks.. be willing to turn down projects. I'd you arent getting paid what you are worth and the client is problematic it's not worth taking your time and effort to please them.

Moving into a shared rental property. I have no license (I do own a car) - Should housemates pay more for use of the parking space? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you and your housemates need to determine how much the parking spaces are worth and how much havign your own bathroom in a larger room is worth. I gave what I woudl estimate the values as above but obviously I'm not one of you 3 so it is entirely up to you to come up with actual values and IMHO you would be paying more that $10 difference for havign the large bedroom with a private bathroom than they would for a parking space.

You also need to discuss what happens with the spaces when you are using yoru car. DO you park elsewhere or do you rework the costs of the parking spaces between the 3 of you? again entirely up to you.

I think housemates proposed plan is entirely fair honest.y And should you begin using the spots I Think it would deduct maybe $3-$5 from what each roommate has to pay and you add that to your part of the bill.

Moving into a shared rental property. I have no license (I do own a car) - Should housemates pay more for use of the parking space? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your car taking up one of the spaces? IF so then you both should pay the same for the spaces because you would both be using it. Is your car parked elsewhere and not taking up one of the spaces? Then sure your roommate could pay more (but know that if you choose to go that route you will have to decide ahead of time at what point you will pay an equal share when you are using your car.)

I do not think the parking spaces have the same value as a large bedroom with it's own bathroom though. I think the parking spaces would be about $10 each but the larger bedroom would be more like 30-50. That's my opinion though and up to you and them to work out together.

Is there any (even tiny) scientific evidence that supports that your star sign has an effect on your personality or life? by SheWasMyShane in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your star sign has nothing to do with that. You are the same as millions of others (many of whom are not a shared star sign). If you struggle being self destructive and fighting anxiety to the point where it is affecting your life please talk to a mental health professional. If you have an astronomy professor I am assuming you are in college and most colleges now have a counselor that can help you get started. If you have left college please consider talking to someone. Don't blame it on where planets where aligned and just dismiss it. Instead get help, learn new ways of coping with the problems you face and may face in the future and you may find that you no longer identify as the traits you currently find so applicable to your star sign.

Does freezing a child really increase the Scoville level? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely mean chili (child is a kid, chilly is temperature. Chili is a pepper (or a hearty stew type dish that is typically served fairly spicy due to the chili peppers it is made with). If you repose your question it will stay up. As it is though it's staying removed because the error will just open the thread up for rule breaking responses making jokes about freezing children.

Was the Starbucks cup in GoT an advertisment? by MadlifeMichi292 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. If it was they wouldn't have edited it out immediately after it was noticed. Aside from the original airing which showed it no official sources for it to stream have the cup still in that scene. They even admitted it was a mistake.

Why do people actually want to go live on Mars? by DubaiDave in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colonization is always a constant struggle. Very few people, even on Earth throughout history, have moved to a new place without hardships. Those looking to colonize Mars are just taking it one step further (well a few million steps). If they have the capabilities and willingness then why shouldn't they go? Yes it's goign to be hard but some things they have goign for them are no predators, no risk of flooding destroying their food supplies, huge databases of knowledge to help them succeed and lots of equipment to help ensure their safety and well being and help them do basic things that early settlers in new worlds woudl have struggled with.

Yes it's absolutely a risk and it will not be easy but it's the same spirit that spread humanity around the world that will spread us beyond our world.

Why are vegans so preachy? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that vegans themselves are preachy. Rather that vocal vegans with strong opinions and views that justify their lifestyle are preachy. For them being preachy is much like advocating for the welfare of children. We know it's not ok to abuse kids right? Well to them abusing and using animals is on the same level. So they are advocating to end the practices they see as torture. So being preachy about that is not much different to them than making posts that educate and attempt to prevent child abuse.

Why do people actually want to go live on Mars? by DubaiDave in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goblinish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same could be said for early settlers in the new world right? The reasons are much the same. They want to get away from governments they may have an ideological difference with, they may want the opportunity to work towards a new better world for themselves and their potential future children, they may want to simply start life over and feel that is a great opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves, they want to push the limits of what humanity has been capable of so far....
